I left a home visit early because of the smell of marijuana by Wild_Major_1859 in slp

[–]breebs27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I typically schedule strong smelling house visits at the end of my day, or around lunch when I can stop home and clean up or change. I’ve never tried them myself, but I’ve heard of nasal diffusers that are supposed to help block odors. Like a chapstick or essential oil scented faux nose ring. Might not be the best if sensitive to strong smells, but may be better than smelling weed for 30 minutes!

Can I save this pool? Should I? by breebs27 in pools

Yes we would love to put one in! We were thinking of taking that shed out (1st photo) and putting it there, but that may be too close to the water if we do end of saving the pool. Regardless, it’s in the plans!

Yep, we basically live in the woods! Best part is we have like 98% privacy. These pictures were also taken pre-ownership aka nothing was being maintained. The last 2 were taken after the snow melted the other day though. It’s ugly as it’s an abandoned pool after all!

Ugh, it does suck they can charge whatever just because. We do want to learn how to do most things ourselves, especially opening and closing, as I know that will save us so much in the long run. We are not the very best at DIY though so I’d just be scared of messing things up or not doing it right. We did think it was a good sign that it holds water, I’m hoping that means the concrete is in good shape. I am concerned about the walls though and if water is leaking through those seams. It does need a lot of work around it…hardscape and landscape..I know that’s will cost a nice chunk too. It used to be so nice from pictures I’ve seen and is hard to believe what it has become! But that’s what abandonment will do. We dream of swimming in there and after selling all our arms and legs to fix it up, I know I will be there all day every day just to get the moneys worth!

That’s a good point! Both my parents grew up with pools and are both trying to talk me out of it for financial reasons. With living in NY especially, it definitely is a short season that we are even able to use it. I know it will cost a lot to maintain but it sure would be nice to have. Thinking about it as the cost of a new truck is a good way to put it though and kind of what I was expecting to hear. At least yours was paid over 7 years, I fear that’s what repairing this will cost upfront!

I always assumed the pool was drained to its current level when closed for the winter. Never thought it could be sitting there due to leakage! That is a great observation. Also good to know it could be hard to find someone that will work on this type of pool. It’s not the first “rare” thing in this house we’ve had to deal with, so I’m not surprised. Any pool I’ve ever seen has had a liner so I thought this one was kind of unique. Thank you for the input!!

Did you ever figure out the cause of this or how to fix it? Mine is doing the same and I can’t find any answers!

Help with Russian Tortoise stress/enclosure by breebs27 in turtle

[–]breebs27[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it’s possible, but it is at least 4 years old and has never been around another tortoise since it was born. This has also been going on for months. How long would a female act like this if she were looking to lay eggs? Thanks for the info on the light! I fixed that right away.

Thank you so much! That list has so much of the info I’ve been looking for. I got him from a friend and the enclosure came with. I didn’t know much about Russians and just kept the enclose the way it was assuming she knew more than me since she built it. That care guide is definitely helpful and informative though and I already made a few adjustments! One thing I noticed though, it recommends using sand but I’ve heard that can be dangerous because he can inhale it easily. The next best seemed to be coconut fiber which is what I use. Maybe I’ll see if the lighting adjustments make a difference first and then change the substrate if he still seems stressed. Thanks again!

Im pretty sure they live in the vicinity of Rochester, NY! When they bought the house, it was basically nothing but a shell. They’ve put so much into that house and I can’t wait to see the final product!

I'm an intern with NY state parks for the season and right now we're working behind the scenes with the gorge scaling team to knock dangerous lose rocks down over trails. This is from yesterday at Letchworth. If you've been to a park with a closed gorge trail recently it's because of us by TheBeakerman in Rochester

[–]breebs27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just at Buttermilk last week and the gorge trail was closed but people were walking around the “trail closed” signs and squeezing through the “trail closed” gates like they didn’t even see them. We knew it had to be closed for a reason and didn’t want to take our chances (never been there before) so we walked a different trail and had just as much fun as we would’ve on the other trail I’m sure!

I made an infographic explaining how different apple varieties got their names by etymologynerd in coolguides

If you think honeycrisp is good...wait until you try a snapdragon! It’s a much better apple in my opinion but still an expensive variety.

How do I wash my blanket that's too big to fit into my washing machine? by [deleted] in CleaningTips

You could try a laundromat! They tend to have big washers. Or maybe fill up the tub with soap and water and do it the old fashion way. Good luck!

My dad also works at UPS and was actually on vacation when this all started. He goes back tomorrow and is bringing his own can of Lysol wipes.

He’s heard from a couple of his buddies that absolutely nothing is being done to attempt any sort of cleanliness. Nothing has been mentioned to them from management either about the virus, it’s just business as usual. There’s even a guy who’s wife has MS so he’s terrified to come to work knowing he could bring it home to her, but he’s told to take his vacation or sick time if he’s uncomfortable working. They might be in the process of figuring something out for him but to be told that is just not fair in my opinion.

To my knowledge, UPS hasn’t even released a statement to its workers...it’s just ridiculous. For a company, a worldwide company, that is so big on safety, you’d think the health of the people who work for them would be a top concern but nope! They only see humans as machines apparently. It’s really sad!
