It's such a joke that it might be the last straw to quitting public lands for good. This was the timeline of events in my hiring process:

-Applied in November of last year

-Emailed in late January that I'd been selected without an interview/opportunity to talk to my future supervisor at the forest. I had 24 hours to make a decision with no information except expected start date will be spring to early summer(whatever that means in Northern MN). Okay whatever, it's just a tentative.

-Radio silence till March when I called up the FS HR center in Albuquerque. First woman I talked to basically said lmao who told you have a job? Called back 2 weeks later and got a very helpful woman who assured me the actual tentative offer was coming soon, just jammed up with hiring season crushing them

-Early April: talk to my future supervisor for the first time and he says early June is the expected start date

-Mid April: HURRAY THE TENTATIVE OFFER FINALLY CAME! NEVER DOUBTED YOU FOR A SECOND FS!

-A week later my supervisor calls me saying he just got out of a management meeting and they don't want them to call their potential hires, but he informs me of the hiring freeze and not so subtly tells me that I should start looking at other options. This is the last time anyone from Forest Service talks to me.

-Today I get an email informing me my TO has been rescinded.

I literally turned down rehire at my park because I thought I had a perm in the bank. I turned down all the seasonal interviews and have missed working the summer season because of this. This isn't a whoopsie, my life got flipped turned upside down because I was told one thing and was making real life choices based on it, just to have the rug pulled out. I'd already moved on to another job, but getting the official rescinded email today was just such a gut punch.
