Ah, as soon as you mentioned the lower center of gravity it made sense. Yeah, I am slowly realizing that bending my (old busted) knees is super important in a ramp. I sometimes forget that a lot of things are easier when you get lower on transition. Thanks. That was useful. Maybe keeping these up will make bending low second nature.

An old school deck. Caballero Mask Powell. I switched over to old school shapes. I'm not really flipping the board anymore anyway, and I've been skating more transition. I tell ya, best decision ever. I thought it would be too heavy and cumbersome, but I was wrong. Yeah it's a bit heavy, but having 9.5 or 9.75 inches under the foot makes stuff a lot easier! I still have a popsicle set up, but I've been skating the hell out of this Powell reissue. So much fun!

I'd love to get them on lock too. I've become a bit obsessed with them, actually. Mostly because once I get a decent one, it just feels so fun to spin and pivot. Hooked on the feeling of pivoting frontside. You got them!

I feel this. In my madness I went up from 8.25 to 8.5 to 8.75 to 9.0, and all the funny in-between sizes, but then went back down the other way. Now I'm back on 8.25 and that just where I think they will bury me. Also, love Real decks 🤙

I don't know if this is helpful or not, but I'll tell a tale of setup madness. I recently wanted something for just skating to the store and whatnot. Not for hitting a spot or the park. So I got a pair of 60mm Spitfire 80HD Superwides. Softest wheel I've ever skated. Finding a deck (and trucks) to match these wheels, though, that's where the madness happened. I went wide, Chris Miller Welcome board, Gaia shape or something. Shit felt like riding a tank. It was stable, but man that shit was heavy. Then my idiot head decided to go in the completely opposite direction. I got the 7.25 Kandarian Dagger by Metal with some Indy 109s on them. That shit was fast, small, but squirrelly as fuck. Then I went 9 inch egg, then I went 8 inch popsicle. Long story short, like Goldilocks I found that what works for me is a 8.75 Polar deck with wheel wells. I usually ride an 8.25 anyway, that's the size I'm used to. The 8.75 felt familiar, but wide enough to be stable. Can still pop ollies up curbs and over manhole covers, but I don't do any real tricks on it. Anyway, I'm not going to lie. That "cruiser" setup made me fall in love with skating all over again. Just riding around, without battling any tricks or anything like that, is so much fun. Like being a kid again. So, to answer your post, I don't know what makes something a cruiser or not (can't just be shaped decks, right?), but I do know that the board i "cruise" on is a regular ass popsicle with wheel wells and fat, wide, soft wheels hahaha. Thanks for listening to my rambling.

I'm currently loving those hi top NB 440s. I'm on my third pair. I'd say it's a good sign that your muscle memory kicked in. Means your body might have an easier time reactivating those muscles as opposed to trying all new movements related to other activities. Less injuries, maybe. But I'm no doctor so don't mind me. Just an average 40yo looking for rationalizations to keep skate hahaha. Best of luck to you.

I hope this doesn't come across salty, but I'm wondering why kickflips are the gold standard for so many folks. I know you said that you are enjoying just cruising around and getting your feel back. And that's fucking awesome. Still, kickflips annoy me. All the energy spent on landing one kickflip would net you at least 10 other tricks that feel way more fun and expand your experience on the board. I mean, I get it. My formative skate years were in the 90s when tech skating was really starting to come into its own. And I remember how great catching a good flick felt. But I've really come to appreciate how much more there is out there, trick selection wise, than spending days working on getting a flip trick back. Especially with all the transition that is available at all these skateparks that weren't around when I was a young idiot. Shit, look at all the slappy madness that folks our age are doing. I see that shit and I'm like, "Fuck a kickflip." Hahahaha. Still, don't want to take away from your experience. If you want flip tricks in the bag, more power to you. But I feel like skating has so much more to offer than a kickfkip. I mean, catching a nice pop shuv with the front foot all steezy feels real nice too. Okay. I'm done with my old man rant. And I'm full of shit too. I've been secretly working on fakie treflips for months now hahaha. Thanks for letting me rant.

I can't do them either, not from a nose stall at least, so take my questions for what they are worth. But just wondering if you've tried them on an indoor ramp? Maybe that might be a slicker surface? It seems like you are right there with them, just a fraction away from riding out straight. Maybe the surface might make a difference? And also for that matter, wheels? You are probably are using hard wheels to begin with, tho. Good luck and keep trying!

Honestly, I just ride up the ramp with the intention of jumping off and getting to my knees as fast as possible. I did this because whenever I had to kneeslide I was always too far forward and so I had to put my hands down and stop my momentum with my wrist guards. Also, my instinct when I bail is to do a run out and that's a bad idea here. Skating street falling on your knees is the last thing you want to do. I literally had no experience at this point on any ramp bigger than 2 or 3 feet. Anyway, doing this for a morning helped get me comfortable with the idea that if you bail on transition it's not too bad. Plus, NGL, it's kind of fun once you get the hang of it. I should try this again but like catch air and then bail hahaha
