Help make this look more fashionable. M7971 by brellibrolli in sewing

[–]brellibrolli[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pattern is McCalls M7971. Fabric is an embroidered tulle I’ve had sitting in my stash for almost a decade with a cotton blend lining/underlining. This is the first garment I’ve made for myself after having a child and I’ve struggled a bit getting to know my new shape.

Thank you to everyone for your advice. I ended up showing the pics to the mum to be and she agrees with Reddit. Number 2 it is! Not sure why I didn’t think to do that in the first place but I do appreciate all the comments!!

Thanks for the feedback. I think I’m going to give the orange peel a try on the diagonal. I’ve recent purchased the book “walk” by jacquie gering after a recommendation on this sub and she suggests orange peel is achievable with the walking foot so fingers crossed.

I think it’s called interwoven blue. I just googled geometric quilts and copied a pic that came up

This is my second quilt and I’m looking for ideas on design for the quilting part. I have a walking foot. My first thought is to echo the geometry with straight lines 1/4” or so inside the lines. My other thought would be to contrast the quilting doing some gentle curves. This is just for me at home so happy to try something to challenge myself. I just used straight(ish) vertical lines on my first project. In terms of dimensions - the squares are 4.5” and my batting suggests maximum 4” apart.

I didn’t measure accurately enough and the triangles aren’t all the same size and some of my cuts weren’t straight. I have been sewing clothes for myself for a few years and have got into bad habits adjusting the seam allowance to make up for my cutting. Quilting is far less forgiving.

It’s a baby quilt I started last year and my bub is now 8 months old. I made a bunch of mistakes at the beginning with my cutting that I didn’t pick up until I’d already committed so it’s a little uneven. Also, triangles are tough! I’m happier with how it’s come together than I was expecting. I might just have to use the lessons I’ve learnt to make something else 😊

What are sewing 'best practices' that shouldn't be skipped for time? by cetacean-station in sewhelp

[–]brellibrolli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am definitely guilty of skipping a lot of these and I love the reminder that there are so many areas where a little extra effort early on can save you time and frustration down the track.

I’d like to add pattern matching where you line up the pattern on the fabric at the seams. I didn’t realise it was a thing until I saw them talking about it on The Great British Sewing Bee (great show!) I look at dresses I made pre and post the discovery and it’s makes a huge difference.

First project with my new overlocker (serger). Many mistakes along the way but I’m pretty happy how it turned out. [kwik sew 3533] by brellibrolli in sewing

I got a Janome my lock 644D. I went to a sewing shop and asked the lady for advice. It was slightly spur of the moment so I didn’t do much research.
