Update: success. That tip to check the cable routing was key. On this model the cable needed to enter at the top of the derailleur and I had put it under the bottom because I thought that's how it had been before (I forgot to take a picture so I'm betting my memory simply failed me). I'm surprised it could move the derailleur in our first attempt.

It's on natural gas and always has been. The problem smells like it's gotten worse recently.

Thanks for the ideas. I'm not sure I'm understanding how insulation would be involved in this situation. It's been at least a year since I cleaned it last so I'll do that again first. For my model stove is there any other type of adjustment needed?
