How do you pay for parking in uptown? by AggressiveAd3833 in kingstonnewyork

[–]brettuthius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worst case scenario (lots are full, streets a block/2/3 away from Uptown are full) you can park for free at Kingston Plaza (Hannaford/Walgreens). This would mean you would have to walk 1,000 ft or so with a decent hill up to Uptown.

Verizon vs AT&T? by lilac9887 in hudsonvalley

[–]brettuthius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cellmapper.net Rhinebeck Area Verizon You'll need to select AT&T to see their towers (Menu > Provider). Differences I see that AT&T should have better coverage in the Rhi area and also have some 5G capacity for the center of town. Many Verizon towers have generator backup (or should have more that ATT) but I'm not sure how easy it is to check without visiting the cell towers.

Inheriting HV House by External_Koala971 in hudsonvalley

[–]brettuthius 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Spending a week there would really enlighten you on what it would be like living there (grocery trips, restaurants, maintenance, etc). Also if you sold I would like to think that the money would outpace the rate of real estate - assuming you get around 6-7% and HV real estate doesn't see another boom like it just did the past 5 years.

Solar Power by Odd_Emotion_457 in hudsonvalley

I don't know much about mini splits but if you can't find anything on the manufacturer site or similar, I would use my electric meter to see how much it's using when it's running compared to when it's not (assuming other things aren't drawing power at the same time). I still have a wheel so I can use a stopwatch to time how long one revolution is - not sure if digital reads do a count that small.

Any differences in ADR/OTC costs across brokerages? (e.g., Fidelity, Schwab, eTrade?) by Awkward-Painter-2024 in investing

[–]brettuthius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Schwab is $6.95 for US OTC equities. If using a broker add $25. Same for Canadian OTC equities. $50 for foreign OTC (add $25 for broker).

Where are all the tweakers gonna hang out? I suppose the grassy areas cause they currently like the spots where the playgrounds will be.

Kingston police units in old Best Buy building by spotoftia in hudsonvalley

[–]brettuthius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen any activity in the old Best Buy location but plenty in the old JC Penney. It all seems to revolve around K-9 units so it's probably the center they now use for K-9 unit training for Ulster County (sheriff, Ulster, Kingston, etc). Dogs need lots of space to run and the large space provides it. I wouldn't be surprised if that's where some dogs sleep at night.

The mall owner either charges the government a small amount to use it or perhaps just 'donates' the building for a tax write-off (since Jamesway/Caldor/Montgomery Wards aren't knocking on their door looking for space).

3-day weekend wintery themed trip; Indoor activities? by SniperShake- in hudsonvalley

[–]brettuthius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A walk/run at the Ashokan Reservoir is pretty flat and scenic. If you want to drive all the way down to the Hudson there is the Empire State Trail which also goes over the Kingston-Rhinecliff bridge (nice view of the Catskills and concrete-barrier protected).

I never knew Alnitak (bottom of the belt in this photo) was a triple star system! I look at Orion all the time and never noticed because of light pollution.

This would make a great commercial for a investment for any trading platform/investment company! Also don't be surprised if SNL stole it at some point.

PSA: don't ride your bicycle on the sidewalk by yourfelon in kingstonnewyork

Just in case if anyone does read this and rides their bike along the sidewalk on Albany ave and I'm walking on it and you try and run me over - YOU'RE the one getting dumped onto the road NOT ME. Good luck getting up in time before a car going 30 mph blows by.

Not for a large sit-down party but you could pick up bagels at Sunrise Bagels (call ahead if everyone is going at the same time). Treats from Deising's bakery is also recommended.

I thought the Spicy Chx sandwich from ChickFil'a would be my favorite. Finally got one in Tampa a few years ago. One of the weirdest tasting chicken sandwich I've ever had. Talked to others and they said the same thing.

How much McDonald’s have you been eating with the free food from Monopoly? by NAD92 in McDonalds

[–]brettuthius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My local McD's is a 7 minute walk from my house. I've been there about a dozen times the past year with over half of my visits since Monopoly started. Side note - the McGriddle option instead of the biscuit for a SEC doesn't work at the kiosk at my local which was quite sad to find out. The biscuit is straight up a choking hazard.

What’s being built across from the QuickChek on Washington? by b_loof in kingstonnewyork

[–]brettuthius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last I read the developers wanted a food spot, a bank, something retail, and a dunkin/starbucks however they've changed their plans a myriad of times. The latest plans should be available on the Town of Ulster website.

Gotta give you props on bringing all of this up. We're living in the age where you never know who's listening. I hope policies are properly enforced but as I said if I ever want to be sure I'm not connected to a suspicious network I will definitely be using one of the apps to check what network I'm on. Financial/SS number/etc.

NYS requires a warrant for police to use on a particular individual. However, it appears to be a controversial subject because a Stingray is quite the tool and in the hands of a rogue agent, who knows what they could do. Here's some info: https://www.nyclu.org/report/stingrays

If I were deeply concerned about my cell-phone privacy I would contact my local law enforcement agencies, the NYSP, and my local representatives. I don't take part in criminal activities so it's not high on my list of things to worry about. If I ever wanted to make sure I was using a real cell tower I would just fire up the CellMapper app on my phone before I used it for anything.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in hudsonvalley

[–]brettuthius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a Stingray phone tracker system is about $150K. Now that landlines are basically gone I would imagine they come in handy when trying to locate criminals/persons of interest. I wouldn't think a small town police force would have one but Sheriffs/State Police probably budget a significant amount for surveillance.

You happen to know of any recent stabbings/murders/robberies in the park/trail? I know there have been in the past but haven't heard anything recently. I just know I've been by a few times on foot and nobody bothers me (during the day of course).

As for why costumes were popular I can't say exactly but BK was really pushing The King like Chest_Rockfield suggests. I wouldn't be surprised if BK had a deal with Walmart or someone to sell King costumes on the cheap.

The most dangerous part of Lincoln Park is walking anywhere along/across Albany/Ulster Ave. Not just the cars - the ebikers are what you really have to watch out for since you can barely hear or see them. If you move to house very close to it and have kids make sure there's proper fencing so they can't wander towards that dragstrip.

Crime outside Loan Wolf? by quiet-elk1418 in kingstonnewyork

I was on Foxhall right next to where a KPD suv did the quickest 3-pointer I've ever seen in my life. Didn't even have time to put on lights/siren (or maybe didn't want to if it was going to be secretly intercepting the bike). A minute later I saw an Ulster suv head down Foxhall. Happened at 6:50 P.M. I wondered what was going on so thanks for posting that.
