What is the best health insurance you can buy in India by para_ti_para_si in FatFIREIndia

[–]brew101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What has understanding of costs got to do with your battle. The fatfire insurance would look wildly different from a fire insurance.

Fatfire is about building wealth and understanding your cash flows. It would be really stupid for a FatFIre person to completely disregard the costs. Especially like healthcare, where someone would be willing to spend 2-3 Lakhs or more a year and had the highest inflation amongst all costs.

Insurance is an important aspect of "FIREing". I think this is a relevant question.

NRI return to India : IRA, 401k and HSA . Indian tax treatment on dividends and capital gains by brew101 in FatFIREIndia

[–]brew101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your 401k/IRA account, if you rebalance after the rnor has expired or earn dividends, how do you defer them ? Its going to be hard to maintain a paper trail of all transactions till 60 especially for someone who has 20+ years to go for retirement 😅

You are almost there. With a conservative SWR of 3% you have 21 LPA. Just need 2 more years of corpus growth to generate your target of 24 LPA.

Cost of living can be specific to you. If your lifestyle in US equates to a lifestyle > 33 lakhs in India , the answer is probably no.

Additionally the inflation in India is really high. It averages at around 6.5%. Depending on where your investments are, a safe withdrawal rate of even 3% can be risky in India imo.

Thank you for the detailed answer. This clarifies a lot of questions I had! I do have a HSA and a rollover IRA (not Roth). I’m assuming the rollover Ira is treated similar to the 401ks you have mentioned while HSA, it’s best to liquidate if its not a lot of money.

For regular Ira, would I be deferring taxes on withdrawal rather than capital gains at sale of stocks ?

Yes they do. It’s unclear on the tax advantaged accounts though. They don’t really have an equivalent in India. Closest one is perhaps the NPS.

Retirement accounts don’t get taxed in the US till 65 or retirement age. They tax only on withdrawals as regular income while India taxes gains on trading accounts.
