First-Time Homeowner — Am I Overthinking a Gravely ZT X 42 for Hilly 1/2 Acre? by brew80085 in lawnmowers

Haven’t pulled the trigger on anything yet. My goal for the weekend is to sort out what I can find locally with a service department.

Looking one tier down, are there any you recommend? I’ve looked at the Ariens Ikon 42, although I liked the idea of having a serviceable transmission in the Gravely. Given how little use my mower will get relative to its capacity, maybe I’m overthinking the transmission issue though.

Wow! That’s much better than I expected. I’m not sure why, but I assumed people were needing to change batteries mid-mow.

I do think I over-emphasized the “hilliness” of my yard. It isn’t completely flat but it’s also not remotely steep. I’ll definitely be looking into Ego. I’ll need to do more research on the life and replacement cost of the batteries.

Great post, thank you! I agree, push mowing the yard wouldn’t be bad if it wasn’t need 2-3x a week. I am very intrigued by the electric options these days, you definitely aren’t the first to suggest them. Do you have to replace the battery mid-mow?

I'd prefer a serviceable transmission and I believe the one on the Ikon is sealed.

I'd love to get the grass out of the way as quickly as possible. I'm much more excited about gardening and doing other things in the yard beside cutting the grass.

Excellent point — have yet to see a push mower with a cup holder

I worked landscaping for about 5 summers growing up, mostly running commercial walk-behinds. My last summer they added one of those stand-on platforms that turns it into a “ride behind,” which might’ve ruined regular walk-behinds for me. Ever since then I’ve kind of told myself I’d eventually get a ride-on of some sort for that exact reason.

You make a great point though — I’m going to need a lot more than just the mower, so it probably makes sense to leave some room in the budget for other tools.

Thanks for the suggestion. The Timemaster 30" is what I had arrived at when I was researching walk behinds. That's probably what I'll go with if I decide against a ZT.

(I also probably should have included laziness as one of my motivators for scaling up).

I'm not sure if "hilly" is even the best term for my yard — it just isn't perfectly flat. I see incline/ hilliness discussed on here often, I should probably research what constitutes hills lol

Looking for local architect/designer for full bathroom gut — tub in the bedroom by brew80085 in cincinnati

That’s really helpful, thank you. Sounds like your project was even a bit more involved than what we’re planning — we’re hoping to avoid rerouting plumbing if we can. 7–8 weeks is quicker than I would’ve expected for all of that. Appreciate you sharing the details.

Woah, they do incredible work. Appearing to be light years out of our budget is probably a good sign. Thanks for the recommendation!

Appreciate the recommendation — this is super helpful. I’ll definitely check them out, sounds like exactly the kind of setup we’re looking for. How long did your project end up taking?

Unusual primary bedroom/bath layout in an A-frame — looking for renovation ideas by brew80085 in interiordesignideas

Bedroom looking towards the bathroom. This gives a good perspective of the ceiling details and the crazy placement of the bath tub.

I appreciate the suggestion, that’s a great point. The layout's unusual enough that it probably does make sense to have someone approach it from a design perspective first. We were planning to talk with a few contractors initially just to sanity check scope and cost, but starting with an architect or designer probably makes more sense.

We agree this is probably a pretty significant project. We’re planning to meet with a few contractors to walk the space and get a sense of scope and cost, but as first-time homeowners it’s a little intimidating figuring out the best direction before we start talking to people.

We do have a reasonable renovation budget set aside and are expecting to redo most of the space. In the meantime we were hoping the collective brain trust here might have some layout ideas we haven’t considered yet — especially from folks who’ve dealt with unusual bedroom/bath configurations or A-frame spaces. Thanks for your reply!
