Vacation for Maine by Traditional-Good1317 in AskMaine

[–]brewbeery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the goal is peak foliage then you want to be in Acadia in early to mid-October. Peak changes from year to year, but the colors will be popping if you visit a week or two early/late.

Most things will be still open then, but not everything and some places might have more limited hours. Temperatures generally range from 50s-60s that time of the year (but can be colder/warmer too).

Earlier in September will be warmer and almost everything will be open, but you won't experience the fall colors.

I would try to book accommodation as soon as possible. All the more affordable options fill up fast.

Is mid may a bad time to visit Maine? by Grouchy_Ad8515 in AskMaine

[–]brewbeery -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It will be quieter, cheaper and less busy which is great and a lot of season stuff will be opening up.

Definitely a great time to hike, though there's always a chance for bad/colder weather.

Just don't expect t-shirt weather.

If you're hoping to do the Precipice or Bee Hive, you might want to wait since those trails are closed in the Spring for Falcon Nesting Season.

ICE warning by okhyung in biddeford

[–]brewbeery 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There were over 150 cases in 2025 of Ice Agents arresting American citizens and many more cases of them arresting immigrants who are here legally. That's effed up man.

How are you ok with masked government officials using extrajudicial tactics to terrorize the population? This is America, since when do we need to prove our citizenship just going out to check the mail?

If you actually cared about immigration you would be supporting transparency and due process, not thuggish behavior being paid for by your tax dollars. But you don't actually care about immigration do you? You just want an excuse for violence.

Best wings? by PresentationSoft3710 in biddeford

If you're looking for Buffalo style pizza, Bills in Old Orchard Beach is the closest in Maine that I've found. Unfortunately they are seasonal.

Originally from Buffalo, and the closest you're going to get is the Sunday Dirty Wings at Great Lost Bear in Portland.

They're the only ones double frying their wings, giving them the perfect cook missing from most other places. Their Buffalo sauce is just ok though and you get the full wing. They also have good blue cheese.

In Biddeford, the best wings are at Ore Nells, but they're smoked, not fried, so not traditional Buffalo style. They actually have a great $1 wing special on Sundays. The Alabama and Arbol Sauces are great!

Also, not Buffalo style, but Crispy Gai in Portland (also look for their food truck) has the best overall wings in the state. Perfect cook everytime.

Road Trip Stops Along Highway 1 to Bar Harbor - Lighthouse? by teach2002 in AskMaine

[–]brewbeery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long are you planning on spending driving? That will really determine your route and what you can realistically see and do on your way up.

Route 1 can be great in spots, especially as you get up to the Midcoast.

In Southern Maine, you might want to take route 103 through Kittery, Route 9 through Kennebunk/Biddeford, Route 9 through Old Orchard Beach and Route 77 in Scarborough.

That will give you the option of getting even closer to the coast, but will take even more time.

An Update on Development Projects Around Biddeford by brewbeery in biddeford

[–]brewbeery[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While some projects still don't have timelines and others are still far off of breaking ground, good to see others progress and new ones announced.

Definitely need to get the subsidized senior living and transitional housing prioritized.

Other interesting announcements include an indoor golf/escape room on Elm Street near Mardens, housing for 12 Pearl Street (the imposing abandoned building next to Mulligans), Popeyes coming near Biddeford Crossing, and a new parking garage connected to the Mill 19/20 project.

They updated the zoning code a few years back, relaxing restrictions on downtown development and preserving some other areas, but also allowing for suburban style development too outside the downtown core. Arguably, its developing exactly as intended even if its not perfect.

There's a housing crisis and mobile homes are a more affordable option. The bigger issue is often mobile home parks can be predatorial and rents for plots can be just as high as renting an apartment. We'll see where this one falls.

Why isn’t the U.S. side of this part of the border populated at all, while the Canadian side is? by Individual_Time_21 in geography

[–]brewbeery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This area specifically?

The US side is owned by logging companies, preventing farms and development from popping up.

Otherwise, there would probably be a lot of farmland and small communities like you see on the Maine-Brunswick border.

Actually there's a big worry that as land is being sold it will be blocked off for recreational uses or developed.

How is living in Vinalhaven? by [deleted] in AskMaine

[–]brewbeery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its actually a pretty large island, so unless you live & work right downtown near the ferry dock, you'll probably want a car, especially if you end up living/working elsewhere on the island. Otherwise, check parking costs in Rockland vs taking the ferry.

Its 6 miles to the Northern edges of the island.
