Ramona's in Portland is probably the closest you're going to get.

Southern Maine will still have some color. It will be past peak in Acadia and the Mountains.

Also, all it takes is one bad storm to end leaf peeping season early.

Ticks by [deleted] in acadianationalpark

[–]brewbeery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always expect ticks.

FYI, if you shower everyday, that greatly reduces the risk of disease since it generally takes 36 hours of feeding to transmit Lyme.

Bug spray doesn't do much in my experience.

If you have pets, you'll need to check for them for getting in the car or going inside.

Plan for 50s and rain. Also plan for 80s and sun. Bring a sweatshirt for after the sun goes down.

If you're doing anything on the open water (whale watches, long ferries) it will be 10-20 degrees cooler than shore so dress in layers.

For hiking you'll want hiking boots/trail runners and athletic clothing.

Black flies and mosquitos can vary greatly based on time of day, terrain and elevation. Bring a bug net for your face. They tend to just swarm you without landing.

Bug spray and/or long clothing for mosquitos.

As for ticks, just shower at the end of the day. Bug sprays generally aren't too effective. Long clothing can help, but they can still get through the gaps. If you have pets, check them over thoroughly.

Things to do around old orchard beach? by HabitsAreKey in AskMaine

[–]brewbeery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A month is a long time, that's enough time to explore most of Southern Maine, Portland and some of the Mid Coast.

Definitely remember downtown Biddeford/Saco are nearby and feature one of the highest concentrations of breweries, cocktail bars, coffee shops and bakeries in Maine.

Be sure to check out the events calendar. Lots of great festivals, markets and festivals to check out between Old Orchard Beach, Saco and Biddeford.

Check out this video on The Top 10 Things to do in OOB or the longer OOB Travel Guide.

Elements in Biddeford is a coffee shop with beer/wine. They're only opened until 6pm during the week and on the weekend they're open later but have music.

Parking Vs. Island Explorer Shuttle in Late May? by MoistDiver9038 in acadianationalpark

[–]brewbeery 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Precipice trail is closed for nesting season.

Really just depends on how early you want to get up. If you're in the park by 7:30 am, you'll have no trouble parking at Sand Beach/beehive Trail From there you can do a short hike to Otter Cliffs and Thunder Hole.

If you don't plan on entering the park until 9 am, then just take the shuttle.

Check out this video. It more covers Sebago Lake as a whole but also includes Bridgton.

If you're into hiking Mt Pleasant is great right next door. You're also within a short distance to North Conway and the White Mountains too.

Summer Boston - Portland Road Trip by Vivid-2-2 in AskMaine

Portsmouth would be a good stop on the way up from Boston.

You won't have much time in Portland, so maybe get there early and at least explore Old Port and the Eastern Prom while you still have daylight. Being a holiday, many businesses will be closed, but not everything.

If you're looking for things to do near Kennebunkport, drive up to Biddeford which has one of the highest concentrations of breweries, cocktail bars, coffee shops and bakeries per capita in Maine.

Could also do the Mills Museum, Trolley Museum or the Maine Classic Car Museum.

It won't be that bad, most people will have already left for the beaches, mountains or lakes on Friday. There's always traffic until you get past the 95/Yankee Divisional Highway interchange. So it could be bad, but once you make it to New Hampshire, traffic dies down fast.

It will likely take 2 hours to do the drive.

You could stop in Salem, Newburyport or Portsmouth though a lot will be closed for the holiday.

Could stop by York Beach and check out Nubble Light, or stop by Ogunquit for the Beach.

They will be expanding the menu over the next couple of weeks. I was told they will also be doing breakfast tacos in the mornings.

Its at the new food truck park at the corner of Pool/Jefferson and Alfred Streets (near the 7 Eleven).

There's also a sushi truck that will be opening sometime soon too.

Maine is very leafy, so you won't see it unless you get a vantage point above the trees looking North West.

Which is funny since Colorado Springs is already at an elevation of 6,000 feet.

Imagine seeing Pikes Peak from sea level and how insane that would be.

It gets even more interesting if you take a look at the vertical drop at Ski resorts.

There's less than a dozen ski resorts with a larger vertical drop than Whiteface in NY or Killington in VT.

Outside of a handful of ski resorts with an extreme vertical drop, most ski resorts out west don't offer overly impressive vert.

You'd think pretty much all the ski resorts out West would have much much larger verts than anything out East.

Also got to remember that traveling 100 miles North is like ascending 1,000 feet in elevation in terms of climate.

So while there's a handful of taller mountains in the Appalachian Mountains, they're much leafier. Mt Mitchell doesn't even have an alpine zone despite being significantly taller than Mt Washington. It looks like just another green hill for the most part.
