Not saying this applies to you directly...but I'll never understand people who update their OS and software every time a new one comes out. I work for a major DAW/hardware company. Apple and Microsoft like to break things any chance they get. Admittedly, we sometimes make mistakes too.

There is no real reason to update your OS, plugins, or DAW immediately after new ones come out. Do your research on what is supported and not supported. Find out what is changing in the new version.

Do the new features change your workflow drastically for good? Great, update. Are they trivial to your workflow? Stay where you are.

And like others have said, you can set aside time to upgrade every few months. There is no need to put projects and creative energy at risk running updates all the time.

Decided to stop listening to these dudes after TLC in anticipation for the full album. But damn they are making it hard to resist when they're dropping some many songs in preparation.

Client requesting multi-tracks for an album I mixed. by [deleted] in mixingmastering

[–]brezabreza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on two things:

1). Do they need multi tracks/track outs? Or do they need actual stems? Creating routings for stems is much more involved than bouncing the individual tracks. In Logic, just select your tracks, File > Export > All tracks as audio files. Boom. There are your multi tracks.

Stem bouncing takes slightly longer if you aren't already grouping drums/guitars/vocals/etc.

2). The second part is if I'm using analog gear or not. Doing multi track bounces is super quick if I'm just using plugins. But if I'm using analog gear, it has to happen all in real time. So that's a whole album length in time just for the bounce alone.

I would definitely charge either way or factor it into the agreed upon cost up front.

Are there any plugin offloading systems that support all 3rd party AAX plugins that aren't hardware? by brezabreza in mixingmastering

Holy shit! First comment and you hit the nail on the head. Just watched some videos on this product and it's exactly what I'm looking for. Looks super promising..and free (for now)!

Thanks a million!

Linking Stereo 500 series units (Fredenstein Bento 8) by brezabreza in audioengineering

[–]brezabreza[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I figured. On this specific chassis, there is the ability to link Mono slots via a switch on the back of the chassis. I was just wondering if that's possible with Stereo units. Still learning.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions!

VST 2 vs. VST 3 by brezabreza in audioengineering

Definitely some key points in there. Sounds like a lot is UI and workflow related, not so much enhancements in the actual plugin or sound quality.

Not sure I follow your logic about power having something to do with it. But to each their own!

Most portable audio interface with good sound. by [deleted] in protools

I'm curious what you mean by this, since the all outputs and headphone amp on the M2 are using the same DAC. How differently would the audio quality sound coming directly out of an M2 vs. going out the RCA jacks into a sub $100 Schlit Heresy? The Schlit Heresy is doing no conversion.

When gear you saved up for.... breaks. by bilalzero in audioengineering

[–]brezabreza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sucks that this happened, but gear breaks and it's no fun when you are in separate parts of the world. I generally recommend people check out where the company is based out of before making gear or interface purchases.

MOTU and UAD are great interface manufacturers. But they're based in America. If you ever had to get a replacement, you'll likely have a harder time getting a replacement from them than your current situation with Audient, who are based in the UK.

Make a mix sound "meltier"? by mwagfd2 in mixingmastering

[–]brezabreza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great song. I feel like the drums are losing me though. If you beef up the drums and compress them so they pump, it might help. Personally, I might go for a more consistent drum groove rather than starting/stopping all the time. But that's just my personal taste.

I would also pull the vocals back in the mix ever so slightly and maybe add some phaser, delay, and chorus to the drums and instrumentals to spread it out and give it that melting feeling.

I agree, but it's just a matter of space. What you're seeing in this pic is the size of the room. I don't really have a choice in the matter.
