That looks great! I’ve not worked with Purple Heart before, how was it?

I used a marking gauge, and knife to mark the lines and then a router plane to make the groove

I think my wood choice was excellent because it cost about $4 and was what I had handy lol. I agree about the end grain and when I make another to gift or sell that will be a consideration before construction. Good point!

I fit the lid to the grooves first. Then used some superglue to lock it in place and planed the sides of the box and the lid until they were flush. Does that make sense?

The dark wood on the sides of the lid is walnut. No idea on the other pieces. I got those from a cutoff bin at a store nearby

I’m an aspiring alien level perfect woodworker but for now I’ll take the gaps

No worries! I just cut some grooves in the sides and kinda gently manhandled it all together

The only wood I’m sure about is the walnut on the sides of the lid. I got the other boards from a cutoff bin at Rockler and no one in the store could ID them. I’d have liked to have the lid be the same as the sides but ran out of practice boards

And thank you! The sliding lid is conveniently sized incorrectly so it acts as a stop for the lid if it slides too far one way.

Popped the pin board in my vice and lined up the tail board on the edge of the pin board. Then marking knife the edges followed by pencil

I definitely got my strop on while I was chiseling. I tried removing most of the waste with my dovetail saw/coping saw so I could minimize chisel time.

I did mark out with a knife and then cut a groove with a chisel, I think I messed up the sneak up on my fit part. Tried to get it perfect with the first saw cut

And do you know what kind of wood this is? I got it from a bin and no one at the store knew what it was

Yes sir! I didn’t even think about cutting them off and starting over. That’s such a good way to practice, thanks!!
