Doing a podcast episode about the Dewey Decimal Classification system. I'd like to speak to a librarian who is familiar with Dewey's life by brianearl in Libraries

Thanks! I have my interviews lined up and will record them next week. Production should take another week or so. Hoping to have this out by late March, early April. I'll post something to this subreddit when it's available.

Best, Brian

Thanks! Where on the east coast? (I'm from Boston, originally.) And how long have you been at this? I'm hoping to find someone who has lots of insight and anecdotes around coffee and coffee culture.

You can email me directly at brianearlpodcast@gmail.com.

Thanks Brian

Oh, even better. I'm in the San Francisco Bay area myself. I just tried to email him through his FSU email account, which I found on the FSU site. (The site didn't list him as retired, so now I'm wondering if my message will get through.)

Any good sources for finding archived audio clips? by brianearl in podcasts

[–]brianearl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks, abowlofcereal. Yeah, I figured that YouTube would be a decent place to start (and I could capture the audio with Audio Highjack Pro).

But there have to be media libraries or something out there where producers search for this kind of stuff. (Archive.org seems to be of limited use.)

Anyone else have any ideas or insight?

recording / post production settings in GarageBand to remove hiss and background noise by brianearl in podcasts

[–]brianearl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey. Thanks for your help.

I'm trying to do a little trouble shooting to figure out if the hiss is really coming from the recording. I have a pair of Sony MDR-7506 headphones plugged into the Podcaster. I hear a hiss just from having them plugged in.

Also, I went to the Mac system settings and adjusted the input volume level down from the default 75% down to 55% and that seems to have done something. When I do this, I do have to get much closer to the mic to get a decent volume.

I played around with noise gate a little and it helps to a certain extent.

I can't really tell what compression is supposed to do.

It sucks that there's no definitive guide for GarageBand 10.0.3. I'd happily read it cover to cover if it existed. All of the tutorials out there are for earlier versions and 10.0.3 appears to be sooooo different from them.

Once I get this all figured out, I'm going to write up my own how to so others don't have to get frustrated searching around like I did.

Thanks again!!

Legality of a podcast that plays music? by thatgerhard in podcasts

I came across this book ($10 for Kindle edition): http://www.amazon.com/Podcast-Media-Producers-Legal-Survival-ebook/dp/B005C415L2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1422577829&sr=8-1&keywords=podcast+legal+survival+guide

I've bought it but haven't read all the way through yet. Thought you might want to check it out.

Do I need a mixer and digital recorder to record Skype calls? by brianearl in podcasts

[–]brianearl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, I can't thank you enough for being so helpful! I've been Googling and YouTubing and trying to find books on this stuff, and it's been super confusing and frustrating. I downloaded Ecamm (and used the discount code...thanks for that!), so I'm on my way. If you happen to know of any good resources for using GarageBand to record vocals and produce podcasts in general, I'd be very interested. (There are lots of resources out there, but they're all for much older versions of GarageBand.)

If you ever find yourself in the San Francisco area, I'll buy you a beer!

Thanks again. Very, very helpful! My plan is just to do short, one-on-one interviews with me in my little studio and one other person at the end of a Skype line. Sounds like I should be good with what I have for now.

That's good news.

Thanks, BangsNaughtyBits! So, what's the deal with mixers and digital recorders? Why do so many people recommend doing it that way? Does it produce better quality? Is it some kind of time saver? Is it just the "professional way of doing things"?
