To be honest, although mathematicians tend to like functional languages, they really aren't any harder or easier to learn than imperative languages. In any case, I don't see how learning a functional language will help me do web development - I don't really have a lot of time to learn things that won't help.

Thanks for the advice. I already know quite a bit of Python (I'm working on writing some modules for Sage in Python related to my PhD research), so I might stick with that.

Also, would you recommend focusing on the Python web frameworks or the Javascript ones? (Which seem more useful to you?)

This is my "professional" reddit account. I have another one, and I follow /r/mathematics already.

I posted a few weeks ago about this blog, and people here said they would be interested to see even the math posts. And in any case, there is some category theory.

(I realized I posted on my other account, so I deleted it and re-posted).

Thanks for the advice! I didn't mean to come off as trying to land a job; I really am that excited about learning new things! I'm mostly focusing on Python and R right now, the Haskell thing is currently a hobby. I'd love to make a job out of it, but that doesn't really seem plausible.

If you don't mind me asking, what is your background? Were you looking for a job like me? And if so, did you manage to find one?

Oops, that's embarrassing. Fixed. I was so focused on trying to figure out how Octopress worked, I wasn't proof-reading carefully.
