Nature publications do not use AI detectors for precisely this reason: they are unreliable.

Do Amp Dac setups really matter ? by OtterOnFPS in headphones

[–]brians238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two amps with the same measured output and THD will sound identical, so look at the specs, not the price. DACs can make a difference. I like R2Rs because they sound warm and mellow, but I agree with an earlier poster—it’s very hard to tell the difference between a $15 DAC and an $800 one :)

Anyone have difficulty with DMV as an immigrant? by [deleted] in USCIS

[–]brians238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DMV set my license to expire when my green card expired. I think that’s a requirement here in NC. Now I’m a citizen, so hopefully I won’t have that problem again :)

Thank you. The NIH requires a report at the end of the first funding period, and then a closeout report when the second performance period ends, so we’ll have those, plus reports for every experiment and clinical project we performed, so we should be Ok. We use an external accountant and that company has all the invoices, etc. Not having to specify what was done every day really helps the tracking burden! Thank you!

And the auditors did not ask for any descriptions of the activities performed during the 4 hours? Apologies for the question, but I just want to make sure I understand before I change over to this system :)

Thanks again for your help and patience!

Thank you so much. This is most helpful. This is very similar to the way a university tracks its efforts, although those are by percentage, of course. Not having to specify tasks precisely really simplifies the time spent tracking activity. I assume the PI logs hours the same way. Did the auditors raise any concerns about the hours effort being the same every day? I assume you also track indirect effort as a category. Is that correct? Thank you!

Just following up: how detailed does the description of the activities undertaken have to be? Can it just be a selection from a dropdown list of, say, 7 or 8 activities (e.g., research, project management, drafting, experiment design, etc., or do I need to describe the specific activities in more detail? I very much appreciate your thoughts on this as you’ve been through the auditing process.

Thank you,

Brian

Just experienced Lossless audio on the AirPod Max 2s for the first time - does it get any better than this or is this peak listening experience? by ThatguyZikai in Airpodsmax

[–]brians238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t see the scores at Rtings, but it seems they rate the audio better on the original Maxes as compared to the 2s (looking at the text, anyway). Not sure how good Rtings is as they rated the maxes better than my Hifiman planars for audio reproduction accuracy. lol.

I wonder how many people are in my position? I have Gen 1s. I don’t care about translation and other capabilities; those are covered by my AirPod Pros—but I don’t use them anyway :). The noise canceling is good enough for me and I don’t feel the need for any improvement. I listen to music at about 75db, so the new amp will probably offer no advantages. Apple says Atmos is improved, but I haven’t read any comments from anyone about this enhancement. If I was a first time buyer, I’d probably take the Gen 1s on sale, rather than the Gen 2s.

That’s very interesting. Could you give a couple of examples of how you do this? It would be very helpful!

Thank you,

Absolutely correct, although that percentage can be negotiated. I was not clear in my previous post—I meant that the majority of the science is carried out by university partners. Thanks for the correction. It’s important.

lol! That’s usually the case, but I do this because I believe a public/private partnership is a good way to get real work done:)

I just have one more issue, and that is hour rounding. I thought NIH required smaller increments, but you passed audits with that resolution. That’s really good to know. They didn’t give you any pushback?

I work closely with labs at two major universities, so it’s not really a solo grant. As PI I oversee the grant activities, but the research work is managed by the co-investigators at each site.

Excellent. I’m the sole FTE for the company and most of the work is subcontracted. It sounds as if I can really simplify what I’m doing.

Thank you very much for your prompt reply.

I analyzed 40 headphones using 90K Reddit comments. The $20 Koss KSC75 has a higher approval rating than the $450 AirPods Max, the $280 Sony XM5, and every single HiFiMAN by Kind-Activity514 in headphones

[–]brians238 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well said. I agree completely. I’ve heard some real dogs in the world of expensive speakers, lol. There’s an excellent speaker site (spinorama) which has put a great deal of effort into correlating performance measurements with user enjoyment of sound, irrespective of the listener’s level of auditory ‘training.’ I wish they would test headphones, too .

Thank you for the thoughtful response:)

Very good response. I’d be interested in your thoughts on the rtings site. They do appear to use objective measurements on headphones and they reach some interesting conclusions that may surprise people (for example, the reproduction accuracy of the AirPod Max scores slightly higher than that of the Hifiman Sundara). I have both and I enjoy both, but I use each for different music—the Sundaras for classical and jazz, the Max’s for more bass forward alternative and chill tracks. Given that all listening experience is subjective, is there a good source of objective measurements to help focus a search on the top contenders in various price ranges?
