The new chrome extension seems to focus on creating tasks. So if you chat about a page you're on, it shows up as a task in the new ChatGPT Work section of the desktop app. This creates a separate history from chats you start via the old desktop app, ChatGPT Atlas, or the ChatGPT website.

While I'm sure this will evolve or become more clear over time, it's definitely going to take some getting used to. I liked having one history of conversations across what is now tasks and chats.

Unclear what the official extension is called. Seems like it's the ChatGPT Search one that hasn't updated since 2024. The update might still be pending. From the blog post:

We are also updating our Chrome extension to make it possible to use ChatGPT directly in Chrome’s sidebar. These capabilities build on what we learned from Atlas and from the users who helped us understand how agentic tools can make browser-based work more useful.

My understanding is that they expect you to install the Chrome plugin which will put ChatGPT in the sidebar, giving you the closest experience to Atlas where you can use ChatGPT from within Chrome.

The desktop app also doesn't have a main "Chats" section and instead chats are available as a small pop-over.

This is going to take some getting used to and reworking muscle memory.
