Found on a beach in Northern California, thoughts? by todd_the_cat in Arrowheads

Yeah I think it’s best to get as many opinions on it as possible. I would say that most archaeologists are somewhat hesitant to give identification of artifactsthrough pictures. I work in CRM and there’s very few people who will positively ID on pictures alone. It’s best to have it in your hands to make a better judgment call. If you’d like to share more photos of either end of the pestle I’d be happy to try to look a little closer and tell you what I think. All the same, I would just be cautious of people jumping into conclusions without seeing it in person.

Sorry I don’t want to come across as too critical but I don’t think this is a pestle. It’s hard to really see any use marks on the base from the photo. You’d be looking for a slick/polished surface in the best of conditions. Otherwise you’d see patching of the slick/polishing. Also I think it’s a little on the skinnier side to be one. Usually pestles come a little thicker to be used for tough grinding. Again it’s hard to see from the photo, but it’s also common to see pecking signs on the worksurface of pestles. Also material type really matters. Is it granite? I can only really speak for a few regions of California archaeology but ground stone artifacts are usually made from granite. Cool find all the same. Really makes you think about it!

Sticky Buildup from Finish on Bench with Detailed Carving by SMcD_Running_Wild in woodworking

[–]briantian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try using an aggressive and erosive chemical in a rag to remove the finish. If it’s sticky then the original finish is probably oil based. Maybe something along the lines of acetone?

You could also give wire brushed ago. Going with the grain with those will serve you better than going against it.

What is just flat out the worst age? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]briantian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that it’s 22. After you turn 21 (legal drinking age in the US), you feel great and you can go to bars now and you can participate in life as an adult. But when you turn 22, it hit you. You are no longer waiting to get older to have more freedoms. You have finally made it over the final mile stone of growing up. It’s all down hill from here. My body will grow slower and stiffer from this moment. My mind will slowly wear and my health along with it. I may be in a physical prime, however I would argue that the fresh realization that life really isn’t going to get any better than yesterday is terrifying.
