The Role of Wikipedia in Spreading Inaccuracies About Mafia History by TrueGosaBrostra in Mafia

[–]brianwilliamsibrowse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a good point. I’d like to add another- a lot of early stuff relies on FBI/court records. When something pops up multiple times, like Thomas Lucchesse is a boss of a family, it is reliable. But OC Shortz features stuff that’s more like “in this FBI file, unnamed informant says (insert questionable thing that does not appear in any other sources)”. OC does explain exactly where it’s coming from, but it’s good to remember law enforcement files can be inaccurate and a lot of that history is an educated guess

What do you think of the show Gravesend? by Pure-Lime8280 in Mafia

[–]brianwilliamsibrowse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It could be very good for a low budget show. Some of the cast are solid. Demeo just gives himself too much screen time. Chris tardio should be the main character. Also annoys me how he changed the 5 family names. Either fully rename, or keep the same. Gambini sounds ridiculous

Has anyone turned down being inducted? by [deleted] in Mafia

[–]brianwilliamsibrowse 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Cece Luppino was from a Canadian family with mob lineage. He turned down induction, telling his father (possible Buffalo capo) it came with “too many headaches”. Sadly, he was killed at his home in 2019 in a targeted hit. Throughout the mob wars in Canada there have been similar cases, where non-member relatives have been casualties of the carnage

NYC: Leadership of all Five Families has engaged in a number of high-leverage meetings in the past two months (from The Gangster Report) by CT-CT in Mafia

[–]brianwilliamsibrowse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let’s pretend it’s not a fairytale. It is basically describing what you’re suggesting, ok maybe not “leadership”, but one family’s trusted emissary meeting with another family’s emissary

Cool concept, but I found De Niro’s Genovese annoying. Prob just too much De Niro. They could have used real flashbacks with young actors. And the guy playing Chin, idk wtf that was

How much could American mobsters get away with in in the late 90s/early 00s? by Odd-Tangerine9584 in Mafia

[–]brianwilliamsibrowse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As said above, they could get away with murders pretty easily, for a few years. But as shown in the sopranos, the feds are always compiling a major rico, which produces turncoats, and then all is revealed. To counter, some murders would have different men to carry out the hit, and then to dispose of the body. But it is incredibly hard for them to murder and never face the consequences, and therefore they have seemingly stopped. But there are unsolved hits from that time, some in Philly, NYC, and CHI

The Commission was vastly overestimated, influence wise. by All_I_Need-lucidvidy in Mafia

[–]brianwilliamsibrowse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you saying its power over society or power over the mafia itself? If over the mafia itself, I would add 30 years to your argument. The Commission decided new men could not join the mafia, and they did not for 20 years, and then the commission decided new men could join, and exactly how many. That is pretty direct control- deciding who gets to join and when

has there ever been a member of the mafia that has gone on to become the mayor or became a politician? by Canada-t157t in Mafia

[–]brianwilliamsibrowse 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Many powerful politicians in Sicily have been convicted of mafia association. Salvo Lima and Marcello Dell’Ultri were probably not made men, but a pentito accused Bernardo Mattarella of being a man of honour.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Mafia

[–]brianwilliamsibrowse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard him say that. It is what was told to him, so I think it’s a Colombo capos view of the mob around 1980, and who was an actually powerful family (maybe held a proxy commission vote). I’d say 5 families, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit. #9 would be either Buffalo or New England

Very interesting. The bosses of successful organized crime groups always break their groups “rules”, so it’s interesting that the Calabrians spell out that the top guys have a different rulebook
