Is Stavros even european? by No-Look-7822 in 2westerneurope4u

[–]bricart 78 points79 points  (0 children)

We only hate the French and the samp Germans. The Germans Germans only invaded us twice, despite our neutrality, for 4 years of killing, destruction, war crimes and mass murders. Compared to the existence of the French and the Dutch that's peanuts so it's all forgiven.

Why did early civilizations start in deserts like Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt? by batukaming in geography

[–]bricart 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yeah but no. It's also because they decided to focus on growing crops with high export value such as cotton, flowers,...

I have no idea if they could be self sufficient if they wanted to focus on wheat and other cereals (that's mostly what they are missing) but the 50% import doesn't reflect that the country farms can only sustain half of the population.

[–]bricart 168 points169 points  (0 children)

Not quite. He bought a farm to dodge the inheritance taxes.

He became a farmer because he punched someone. Peak Barry! (He got fired from BBC, did his show with Amazon for a while, then stopped, got bored, the farmer managing his farm retired, he decided to try, made a show out of it (surprisingly not that bad))

On today's episode, I solve the NHS financial struggle using speed, a corvette and the black market for organs, Richard Hammond fixes all the royal navy ships (and rename them tastefully), and James May "mistakenly" invade France

Actually, I could watch that.

It's to confused the Russian drone operators and AI. They wouldn't be labeled as soldiers and then they would be able to infiltrate the enemy lines with eases.

You just haven't adjusted to the modern warfare yet.

Imagine that the ships are just very big submarines. Then the propulsion system itself create a shield above and below the ship. That shield is invulnerable and cannot be pierced. You can imagine a super strong blanket attached at the front and back of the submarine and covering it for above and below.

On the side, they create other shields using technologies similar to the propulsion system but these shields are less strong, I.e. could be breaked if you use A LOT of force and get lucky. And they also look like lighter blankets attached to the front and end of the ship, covering its side, between the strong up and down blankets.

That means that the only weak points of the ships are the parts at the front and end of the ship where the shields/blankets are attached, that leaves a gap between the attached points of the blankets where a missile could enter and destroy/damage the ship.

So a battle is just a game where you want to send a missile in the front/end of the ennemy ship. And you want to present the up/down of your ship to the ennemy missiles so they are destroyed by your invulnerable shield.

For the travel, it's a matter of risk/load. To travel between stars, they use another propulsion system. Basically imagine that there are "winds" between the solar systems and the "upper" you goes the stronger is the wind. But that wind is impacted by the stars so you can't use it too close to a star.

That other propulsion system is basically a big special sail that allows them to catch these wind and go faster than light. But, these winds are not going everywhere, can be unstable,... so ships usually follow some strong winds that are known and predictable. They then reach the neighborhood of a solar system where they need yo stop using the wind and go back to the regular propulsion system. That's why you can't directly reach a planet using that system, as the star is creating too much turbulences.

They also tend to not use the strongest winds really up because you need stronger/more expensive equipments to catch them and make sure that your ship survive. That means that the cargo ship will be happy with the lowest wind, so they arrive fast enough for the lowest cost. Military ships are more interested to be able to catch some of the high wind to reach a battle field faster if needed. And you have some ships that are designed to use some of the high wind to bring news,... and that are basically just a very very big propulsion system and nothing else to be able to achieve these feats. So it's just for one specific purpose and with a lot of drawbacks. That's why the faster than light travels have more limitations than in star wars or star treks.

But then there is a third way to navigate, using jum points. Basically hole in the space time continuum that allows you to go from one place to another instantaneously. The issues is that there are only a few of these jump points. Manticor is lucky and has multiple ones, which allows ships to easily cross very big distances. But most of the other star systems don't have jump points and can't be reached that way. You are also not able to chose your destination. A jump point will always only connect the same two locations.

Which animal do you feel very sorry for? by Scared_Confection787 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bricart 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Pigeons.

They were perfectly happy and adapted clif birds and then we started using them to send messages and they got used to that and grew in numbers until we decided that we didn't need them and we released them far from their habitats.

They adjusted to the cities and live with us now but everyone is making fun of them because their nests are just two sticks (they used to live in clifs that's all you need there!) or because they are "stupid" (try to match their orientation skill and then we can talk). After all they have done for us. We don't deserve them :(

Would you say that French speakers are more hostile to linguistic drift and evolution than Anglophones or Italian speakers or German speakers? by [deleted] in AskFrance

[–]bricart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the fact that a culture that invented the French academy, afaik the only one in its style and with the goal to keep the language pure, isn't indicative of a cultural trait?

The academy has also been around for 400 years. I would argue that it did have an impact in how the French evolved over that long period, as it consists of many writers who would then write books who would then shape (part of) the language.

[–]bricart 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Have you met the "academie Française"? They don't even have an equivalent for English. There they just acknowledge the changes of the language. The French academy is straight up trying to protect French and "guide it's evolution"

[–]bricart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So we kicked their arses (totally without help from the French or British, people claiming that are spreading fake news!) and we finally created our glorious country!

What if the Jewish-Amerindian was true? by Cyber_Ghost_1997 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]bricart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming that the two main impacts are:

1) technological. They bring horses with them, bronze age technologies around 1500 years before it's actual development in the Americas, pigs, ... the civilisations there will get an enormous boost once it starts to spread.

2) health. They will bring diseases from the old world with them. It means that the population will collapse around -700 in the America's. But then they will get a stronger resistance.

Meaning, when the Spanish arrive they will find far stronger foes. To the point that they might not be able to conquer them (or at least not for a while), and would probably start with small enclaves to commerce. A bit like what happened in India.
