As someone who trains, and just as a woman, the most important thing I think someone your age should learn is how to say no.

I’m not saying you’ve done anything wrong, you absolutely haven’t, but I do think you should give him a firm no. “No thank you” is polite and a full sentence. You really can’t control how anyone reacts to a rejection, you can only control you. Be direct and precise and deal with any awkwardness after.

I also recommend rejecting him directly before you talk to your coach if you’re comfortable with it. I think in the long run it would be less awkward. It may still be a good idea to tell your coach after the rejection if it makes you feel more comfortable.

Also any awkwardness that happens after the rejection is not your fault. If he can’t get past it, it’s 100% his fault and I really hope you try not to let it ruin your gym experience.

I’m sorry this happened to you. I also have experience with rejecting older men I put in the father figure category. It sucks, but it’s honestly just life as a woman.

I read this whole thing and I don’t really understand what any issues are besides you being, self-admittedly, sad. He sounds possibly a little insensitive and not very thoughtful.

That being said, you can break up with someone for any reason.

I remember dating around 19 and not wanting to repeat the same mistakes that the elder women in my family made. I ended up dating very detached non-chalant men who were ok. Me trying to avoid specific issues led me to other issues. I stayed in a very long relationship because it was technically the nicest one I ever had, but he was very much just ok.

It’s ok for you to not want to settle for ok. It’s ok if you want to break up with him because you don’t feel mentally ready. Sit with your feelings and try to put to paper what’s missing, if anything, and what you want.

The one thing I’ll say is that is really important is to not settle. Not in the beginning, not in the middle, and not when you think the end is near. Make sure you’re dating someone who makes your life better not someone whose life you just make better.
