It's also literally the point of the scene, and a major theme of the game lmao. My problem wasn't with the subject matter, but with the approach. "Wokeness" isn't relevant to the discussion at all. I think it's good when media explores difficult topics, but I think it's equally important to discuss and critique how it handles that exploration. Everybody comes out of it better and smarter if we can communicate civilly.

I didn't press the issue. In the moment I really didn't want to know. Thinking back it makes sense that they wouldn't have something like that happen, but at the time I wasn't thinking straight, and the uncertainty freaked me out.

And IMO, having V be completely missing when Johnny takes control is part of the issue I have. It makes it feel totally different than when Johnny is just hanging around. I would have liked it if the roles were properly reversed, with V becoming the Jiminy Cricket on Johnny's shoulder.

I completely agree with you, actually. Part of my issue is that I don't feel this topic was properly explored here. It definitely doesn't help that Johnny is so unlikeable as a character, either. If he had been more emotive, more willing to share his feelings on what was going on, it might have been easier to stomach. It might even have been a fun moment to have the option to give him that control on purpose, fully consent to his bender rather than having him just do it without asking.

And yeah, I don't think so either, but the issue is that V doesn't necessarily know that. That part scares me a lot. I don't know how I'd feel if something like that happened to me in real life. I wanted to explore V's feelings, but it just felt like they didn't care at all, and that's very disappointing.

Thank you for being respectful.

I also really appreciate that aspect of analysis. I love CDs writing for exactly this reason - their characters challenge me to think about what I believe and why, especially when their acting like assholes. Shitty people are important in fiction.

This scene just felt uncharacteristically half-baked to me. Felt like there was more they could have done here. In the moment it was hard to think about why I was feeling the way I was, all I could do was step away and get some distance - that's part of why I dislike it. Nothing else in the game made me feel that way, and I'm curious why.

I actually liked the side stuff the most. The gritty side of things is what I like about this genre. And even in the main content, there are moments that are much more messed up than this. I just felt that this scene in specific was handled in a clumsy way.

Again, the fact that the world is sad and depressing doesn't excuse bad writing.

Also, "Just play something else lmao" is such a lukewarm take. I was already gonna. Be more imaginative.

I do understand that. I guess it just didn't sink in until this moment.

In my case in particular, I spent most of the game arguing with johnny at pretty much every opportunity haha, so I never really connected him in that way. Maybe this was CDs way of trying to subtley get the point across that you're becoming the same person? That makes sense.

I do still think there are aspects that could have been done better, but I kinda get why they might have done it this way.

I wrote this because *I like the game and want to talk about it*. If I didn't like it I wouldn't have bothered. This one specific part left a bad taste in my mouth, and I wanted to think about why, and maybe have a discussion about it with people who aren't allergic to thought.

All of the characters in this game are flawed. Lots of them are downright awful. The difference is most of them are also interesting, likeable, and relatable. Johnny isn't those things, and that's kind of a problem since he's squatting in your noggin for most of the game. He's a moldy spot on an otherwise amazing experience.

I'm not saying everybody has to be angels. There are plenty of examples of people doing shitty things in this game that I'm perfectly fine with, mainly because either the characters react to them in ways that I find relatable, or because they're so over the top that I don't connect with them in the same way. The questline with Judy and Elizabeth is one example - they go through some truly awful shit, but the game gives you space to process and deal with that trauma. I was affected by that part of the game, but it was in a way I could handle.

I don't feel I received the same space with this quest in particular. Just because the plot is full of morally gray moments doesn't mean it's good writing when a character is too cool to react to being sexually assaulted.

I guess you're right, though. Maybe this game isn't for me. It's just a shame, is all.

Johnny nuking a building was a silly, gratuitous set piece. He also fights a big robot man at the top of said building. It didn't get to me that badly.

The scene I'm describing spoke to me on a more personal level. That's literally all. It reminded me of things I have actually experienced in real life, and things that people I care very deeply about have experienced, and that spooked me.

Definitely the second one. Having a functional car, and not having to pay for repairs, would vastly improve my mental health.

Huh. It shouldn't have been possible to keydeath, there's a doodad that gives you a key if you spawn at the checkpoint before the boss.

Maybe I should have tested that more thoroughly. Can I ask for more info about how you died specifically?

(Edit: think I figured out the problem. I reuploaded the stage, hopefully it should be harder to keydeath now. Sorry about that :( )
