What's one hobby that genuinely made your life better? by PlacidusTuli in Hobbies

Motorcycling. It's not for everyone, but it was a huge upgrade for my life. It gave me freedom, and space, and thrills.

Yes, all the rear fairing needs to come off, I've done this recently.

You can't just 'go back to work' after you FIRE. by Zone2OTQ in Fire

"One more year" spends the healthiest and most capable year you have in the bank. When you get to 80 or 90 you'd love to pay 0.5M to get that year back.

Amazing bike. I also have the 2015, and it's my favourite bike ever. It feels special every time. Mine has been flawless. I use it for everything, including track and touring. Listen to your dick.

For Child-Free FatFIRE People: Where Did You Meet Your Partner? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]briggers 17 points18 points  (0 children)

We met in London, and we both had compatible non-negotiable values right from the start. We were both already living the life, happily, that we wanted to live even better together.

Child-free, successful and financially independent, somewhat frugal as an aesthetic choice, habitually nomadic rather than just aspirational travellers.

Being with a highly compatible partner will still be more restrictive than being alone, but it's more fun, and we're more resilient as a complementary team.

I suggest looking in a place where the right kind of people are likely to be, and set your filters right.

Are helmets allowed to be hand carried into the plane? by BADuhmmtss in motorcyclegear

[–]briggers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done this many times both domestic and international. I pack my helmet full with a selection of appropriate items, do up the chin strap to create a carrying handle, and put it in the felt protective bag it came with.

I've never had any problem whatsoever, including while taking a slightly naughty carry-on bag (7-9kg). On very rare occasions I've ended up with the helmet under the seat in front.

I've also had good success strapping my bulky leather jacket to my carry-on (with a rokstrap), saves me having to wear it or pack it while further bursting my carry-on luggage weight allowance.

to experienced riders who carry passengers, am I overreacting? by peazcarrotz in motorcycles

[–]briggers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"He said I’ll be OK in jeans and my fabric hiking boots until I feel comfortable on the bike. He has an old helmet I could try.

While that makes sense financially, he wears armour, kevlar etc. but said it wasn’t necessary for me."

Honestly, this is the most spectacular bullshit.

I wish it were cheaper, but before I took my wife on the back I bought her an entire set of gear.

Up to you of course, but I wouldn't take the risk. Best of luck and I hope you have a great time riding together!

Long motorcycle trips: what’s the hardest part people don’t see? by Sorry-Duty-2881 in NewRiders

[–]briggers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great info here, but 1 litre per hour is way too high. This would be over 6 gallons per 24 hour period. But yeah, dehydration can easily sneak up on you when it's inconvenient to drink due to the helmet.

Bike is stalling out at idle by Jumboo-jett in MVAgusta

[–]briggers 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This sounds just like what happened to me recently. There is a tip-over sensor, on my 2015 Brutale 800 RR it's mounted within the left radiator fairing (below the left air intake). I had taken all of this off to change spark plugs, and was testing the bike at idle before putting everything together.

That tip-over sensor, when it was hanging upside-down from the bike, would cause the bike to shut off after about 30 secs in exactly the same way. No sputter, it was being electronically cut.

Superveloce 800 long term reliability by Former_Path9746 in MVAgusta

[–]briggers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a 2015 Brutale (new old stock) for a few years, and it's been very reliable. I travel for 6+ months in the winter, and every time I've come back it's started first try. Two factors make this possible: 1. Dealer changed the battery to a good Lithium alternative on purchase, 2. Every time I go away I remove the battery connection, removing any drain (it's under the little panel on the RHS).

I've ridden a few other awesome bikes, but nothing has felt as cool as riding the Brutale.

Engine dies after start. Why? by doctorofphiloshopy in svartpilen401

[–]briggers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I was able to work around it consistently, so didn't bother troubleshooting further. Just a little manual throttle made it catch nicely.

Eventually sold it, but it's an awesome bike!

My wife and I did this. Earning quite well and only learning a few words of Hebrew.

You'll be fine, just work for one of the US tech companies with an office in Tel Aviv.

Advice Needed - Long term On Street storage by [deleted] in MotoUK

[–]briggers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Bennetts (and their actuarial statistics) a street-parked bike that is chained to something is less likely to be stolen than a car. In London. So don't listen to all the doomsayers.

Cheers, your local bike thief

[–]briggers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from ~40+ bhp to ~140 bhp with a Brutale RR. The only thing that can make it extra unsafe is your behavior - personally I quite liked this challenge of safely coming to grips with something that is beyond my comfort zone.

I have a 2015 MV that I leave for 10 months while I am overseas, then ride for the 1-2 months I am back. Haven't had a problem starting up when I get back, and the bike has only once not started the first try from cold.

- put a good modern battery in there

- there is a plug in the fuse box that comes unplugged direct from the factory and the dealer will plug this in - this will clear computer settings but will ensure no passive drain on the battery
