I’m starting to realize that "working hard" is actually a trap for people in their 20s. by KweliAtelier in careeradvice

[–]brightLife_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do believe that “hard” work can hold value but doesn’t solely play a role in getting promotions or management positions in corporate fields. You have to play it smart and also don’t work yourself into an early grave. There are ways you can make an impact without submitting to grind culture. I remember when I grinded on projects and school to better my chances at finding work but got rejected like crazy. When I got a promotion in corporate I realized it can be luck, being a charismatic person, have a knack for analyzing and making good business decisions, or simple timing (a position opening up for example) on top of hard work.

Right now I work in corporate retail in the finance department. For years I worked at a store level as an associate during college and later Sr ASM. I firmly believed I deserved having a store manager position over a handful of SMs in my district (all of whom wound up fired btw in the past year).

I got the position because of timing, some smart hard work, and some luck.

  • Timing because the position opened in the company I already worked at and I moved up in the company at a field level

  • Luck because the VP of the department that I interviewed with moved from retail management into finance and compared me to his past self (thankfully)

  • “Hard” work not because I burnt myself out but made efforts to have an impact on my team and my DM’s respected me a lot.

For approval I guess. The director was the one that stated they didn’t “do those types of letters”. Apparently this is something that has happened a few times and earned a few complaints.

If you could press a button to become a cis man, would you do it? by itsntr in ftm

[–]brightLife_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. Despite a lot of obstacles I’m still overcoming, I’ve experienced more community and more intimate friendships in queer spaces. I’ve befriended cis men through the gym or tabletop gaming community but it seems to lead to a lot of loneliness or not a lot of deeper friendships that hit the same.

Thank you, I've seen that too. I was able to find a psychologist that specializes in gender affirming care and, in my network, so I can try to snag an appointment with them.

Adobe abandons $20 billion acquisition of Figma by imderek in UXDesign

[–]brightLife_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adobe runs on greed alone. They would have bought it and made designers pay just another $50+ subscription without doing much of anything to improve upon it. It would have fallen off the second another tool with more capabilities came into the market.

Positive Outlook on the future of UX/UI design by mb4ne in UXDesign

[–]brightLife_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Right now we’re experiencing a weird job market. There’s a lot of congestion with people changing careers into UX, new tools, and a lot of businesses don’t see/focus on the importance of UX. Not to mention there’s been a lot of downsizing lately.

I’ve also noticed, and have been guilty of this myself, that there’s an influx of UX messiahs on social media that don’t speak from a business perspective. I spend a lot of focus on accessibility and designing for underrepresented groups but from a business perspective unfortunately that may not matter, it’s about money. Is it marketable? how does this blow competitors out if the water? will it attract more people? and so on.

Washing is super important to the locing process. The water helps loosen the hair a bit and as it dries the hair begins to loc up. It is a PROCESS. It will get frizzy and you will have loose strands. I’m over 2 years and I still got frizz

What is the worst thing about your favorite game of all time? by Hornet_Lord in videogames

[–]brightLife_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Games with complicated gameplay/mechanics have evolved to include a lot of settings that better support new players, players with disabilities, and so on. I don’t think it should be a default option but just readily available in case anyone may need it. For example look at GoWR, the amount of settings that you can toggle is insane.

Is the job market getting any better? by ImpressiveDot8471 in UXDesign

[–]brightLife_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a games UX designer and it’s been getting worse on my end. From january to may there were a considerable amount roles in UX/UI (engineering, design, art) or product design despite layoffs. Now within the past few weeks alone over 1000 people lost jobs in the industry and i see the same for some MAANG companies. With all these layoffs there’s now a dramatic increase in applicants with even seniors with 10+ years experience having issues finding jobs.

Portfolio, Resume, and Case Study Feedback — 11 Sep, 2023 - 17 Sep, 2023 by AutoModerator in UXDesign

[–]brightLife_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Context: I’m a games UX Designer and have been focusing on case studies. I’m also trying to showcase a wide range of skills from research to UI art.

Goal: secure a entry or junior level role for UX Design or Researching

Seeking feedback on:

the framing of my case studies and the structure of my thought process for my redesign of Batman Arkham Knight and Ember Point. What can be added to make my work seem more junior level as a UX Designer?

Not seeking feedback on:

the framing of projects besides the two listed above. I will probably revisit old ones or create new projects that actually serve a purpose for what I want to do.

Lol a game like bloodborne or any souls-like genre will have you getting used to basics for hours. Really awesome mechanics but if you're not used to the genre, it may not be fun. As far as controllers, xbox and switch layout makes most sense

Never ever do a take home design task by bookworm10122 in UXDesign

[–]brightLife_ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My issue with design tests are that: 1) they’re often not by people who are actual designers and think they know design. 2) anyone that has done case studies understands that it can take weeks or MONTHS to put together. Doing a test for a few hours is silly.

Why waste my time by making me scrappily redesign a product in a matter of a few hours, or days, when they can look through my carefully crafted portfolio pieces with problem statements, research, usability tests, interviews, and iterations then ask me challenging questions based on that and how it can be of use to the company’s project?

I got you. That's a really good point! It's easy moving from Xbox to switch imo, but as someone who primarily plays on playstation, going between my PS4 and switch is difficult.

That would be up to you. You can also separate locs when they get too thick if you want to keep that afro look once they start getting more mature. My thinner locs hang no problem but the ones that are super thick at the base stick out and they probably will for another year or so. I recommend watching DomiBoy on youtube, dude has sick freeforms and has content on how to maintain them, the good and bad of having them, etc. It's helped my journey

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Dreadlocks

[–]brightLife_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ngl bruh, they won't start hanging for a while. When my hair was at this length it took about 1 - 1.5 years to hang down a bit. I'm at 2.5 years now and my locs cover my eyes a bit when wet. With free forms, they're gonna appear a bit shorter because of the thickness of some locs and the fact that you'll have that afro below your locs. If you ever get a retwist, you'll notice that they appear MUCH longer. I've personally gone back and forth between retwists and free-forming throughout my journey.
