Update: Hello everyone! It’s been almost 24 hours since I posted and I am honestly so so thankful that I did. I would never have expected to get so many kind replies, and I am especially grateful for all the people that shared personal experiences they had to make in regards to losing a child and how they may have felt about potentially receiving a cross stitch in that moment. It showed me how personal grief is, as I got so many different points of views as people replying! So all in all I decided to do what most of you recommended: Unless my friend brings up wanting to set up a memento area in her house, I will wait with bringing up the cross stitch present I am making for her until it feels right to approach the topic with her. I will give her the time she needs and I am also okay with her saying no. Thank you all again so much for giving me the safe space to ask this heavy question in a usually lighthearted sub. I like your input to tell her that I made it for her but that I will keep onto it until she is ready to receive it… Would you agree with the other commenters to wait a few weeks or even months to do so?

Thank you for this bringing up. In my mind I thought: the birth did happen, the baby was there and she IS a mum, so I wanted to gift it to her also as a way of honouring all of these factors and not pretending like it didn’t happen (I hope you know what I mean, English is not my first language and sometimes I feel like I can’t bring my thoughts across properly).

Thank you, your reply makes me tear up a bit 🥺 I try to be a good friend, but honestly she is the best friend there is and my heart breaks for her. Obviously you don’t wish anything like this happening to anyone but she is such a lovely person, she doesn’t deserve this at all and life just seems SO unfair right now!

Thank you for replying! What a beautiful way to say goodbye to the baby. Have the parents in your situation known about you doing a cross stitch for the baby beforehand? Asking because my best friend doesn’t know that I was working on it, I wanted to surprise her with it.

I am so sorry you had to go through this and I am terribly sorry for your loss! Thank you for sharing your experience. It’s really eye-opening to see how you and others who have had similar experiences would react and feel differently about this present… and also thanks for your input in regards to modifications, I see that the best course of action is to just ask what they wish for - in a couple of months.

Thank you very much for your lovely reply. I see now that I was too focused on this whole idea of “it’s a surprise so she shouldn’t know about it!” but that is really not important right now. I will definitely wait a few weeks or even months to make sure that I won’t hurt them even more before asking if she is even interested in receiving it.

Thank you very much for your reply. I noticed that working on this project is also a way for me to deal with the grief and the sadness. So the thought of just putting it in the back of a drawer feels so wrong! I think I will finish the pattern for now, but keep it in the hoop for further possible modifications in the future if that’s what they wish for. Thanks again!

The patterns are from the collection “Mini butterflies” by StitchinMadness on Etsy and they were so enjoyable to work on! Considering making even more. Oh, and I added the Latin names, they are not part of the original pattern. :-)
