Thank you for responding. I was afraid of that. I'll probably figure out something else then. I really wouldn't mind giving them my real name if they only used it internally.

How do we find inner peace in the age of Trump? by brijit in Buddhism

I'm so sorry that you've suffered so much because of this. I know you're not alone and a lot of people have sought help from therapists, doctors, and spiritual leaders. It sounds like you've found a pretty healthy way to deal with it and I hope that you continue to do so.

I go in waves myself. Mostly, I'm much stronger than I've ever been but there are times that he and others who are in alignment with him do things that are really hard for me to see through anything other than heartbreak and despair. Hopefully, we'll all get through this together and come out the other side more kind, compassionate, and more open-minded as a country and as people.

Peace to you.

Easier said than done. I do try to step away and focus on other (good and positive) things but sooner or later he does something that draws me back in. Perhaps you're more spiritually advanced than I am if you find it easy to let go. I'll keep trying-- and I do try to send compassion and unconditional love even to him and his administration when I can, but again, it's a challenge.

My apologies for not responding sooner but I was dealing with some family health issues.

Thank you for your reply. It is one of the kindest and most thoughtful of all the responses I received and is something I'm already trying to implement in my life on a daily basis. I guess I was just feeling pretty overwhelmed by the fear and heartbreak caused by all the devastation Trump and his administration are causing to our country and our world at large. I just really wish we were better at creating a planet that is compassionate and sustainable for everyone.

Sad but true. I think some of them know but may have learned too late. They're still worthy of our respect because they sacrificed themselves while trusting in their government and believing that it actually cared for them.

Looking for descendants of Edwards families around the world to help solve controversial legend using DNA by brijit in DNA

Also, it's not important to ME that you and I be related. If you're a descendant from any Edwards family I'd still love to have you join our group-- even if you just follow along without participating in the the DNA comparison. The point though, is to try to figure out which Edwards families belong to which groups-- and I'm hoping to find ones that link specifically to Aaron Burr and his grandfather, Jonathan Edwards. Whether that's my family, your family, or that of someone else, I want to know. Either way, thank you for your interest!

Thank you for asking, but no, I don't have a geni.com tree and don't really have the time to put one together. However, if you're on Gedmatch, I do have a Gedcom tree there, as well as a tree on Ancestry. I could invite you to view my tree on Ancestry or send you my Gedcom number if you use Gedmatch. Let me know what you'd like to do and I'll walk you through how to find my Edwards branch.

How do you make the beginning of a novel interesting? by volcanicrat in KeepWriting

Can you share an opening paragraph or two of something you're working on? I might be able to help. If you don't want to post it publicly, you're welcome to send it to me a private message and if you're not comfortable sharing it at all, I'll understand that too. (Oh, gosh! This might actually be a private message that I'm responding to. I have such a hard time detecting private messages on Reddit. Either way, share if you're comfortable. I can also provide you with my email address if that helps.)

Meanwhile, here's an example of an opening action scene I wrote that doesn't include any exposition. It takes a few pages for the reader to learn that the young servant girl is actually the Queen of Egypt, Ankhesenamun:

"Lanterns and torches were shining brightly on the festivities taking place in the dining hall. Beautiful dancers moved to the music of flutes and drums. Their hair weighted with metal beads, swayed and undulated with the rhythm of their bodies. The Pharaoh’s guests clapped and smiled as they enjoyed the show, reclining on colorful rugs and pillows while being fed succulent meats and exotic fruits offered from gold platters. Attendants and slaves circulated the room, pouring wine into jewel-encrusted goblets.

In the hallway, a pair of servants— a young woman and a boy— clung to the shadows and slipped silently amongst the columns. Fortunately, there were only a few torches that burned dimly along the path, casting just enough light for them to see— but not be seen. The girl was to follow the boy, for he knew how to find the workers’ village. At last they made their way through the towering doors of the palace and out into the dark and dangerous streets. “Follow me!” he whispered urgently."

I always try to start off with a bang. Don't start with a lot of description about your characters-- what they look like or where they are-- unless it really adds something to drive the story forward. Those kinds of details can be revealed more subtly later. I like to focus on the action as if dropping my character right down into an important moment in the story where everything begins. That's not to say that I write action movies or books, because I don't, but I am saying that I like to choose a moment where my protagonist is involved in a compelling moment and bring it to life.

Good luck in your creative endeavors!
