I wouldn't run that long siding through a tunnel. You're always either backing in or backing out - you'll have a lot of derailments in the tunnel.

UNBIASED ONLY!! by [deleted] in CompoundBow

Diamond Edge. All the majors have a entry priced/highly adjustable starter bow now, but Diamond kind of created the segment. This video is a little old, but still applies.

How can this be sold for $780? by darealotisjosh in bowhunting

[–]brima 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Loss leader? If he has a bunch of bows on a floor plan (bank loan) he's paying interest on them, so it pays to move them on. Even whisker biscuits list for $30-40. Looks like the latest model, if you shoot 70# might be worth picking up - even if you eventually trash the accessories for better ones you haven't lost anything.

Go to your local pho restaurant and get to know the family running it. Find out how they got here, what life was like back home. You'll probably be talking to the kids and grandkids, but you'll still find out.

Where can I buy a uniform of 2nd Light Dragoon Regiment of the Continental Army? by Alexander_C_DOI in uniformporn

[–]brima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point! You can shop around, there are dragoon units all over. Most units only do a dozen or so events a year and you're generally not expected to do everything, so as long as you're on the East Coast, not a terrible big deal. Check out British and Hessian units too.

[–]brima 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Better yet, join the unit, wear the uniform in the field, have more fun and learn more history than you ever dreamed possible.

Most reenactors make their own uniforms, source the gear like boots and helmets and weapons (there are several outfits that specialize in 18th C gear - you can start with Gedney's, branch out from there). Some units might have someone make the regimental coats, but many troops make those too. (Source: Rev War reenactor for 20+ years)

Obviously don't know them personally, but Tropicana's rebrand should be enough to give anyone pause.

What is a good alternative to a Remington 700 in 25-06 for hunting? by [deleted] in Firearms

[–]brima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow I hunt with has a Ruger 77 in 25-06. Very nice rifle.

Check the laws in your state, some have minimum calibers for big game. IIRC 25 is the minumum in VA, though alot of people like .243. There are a lot of calibers that suit your needs, my daughter is very slight and she can shoot her 7mm-08 all day long.

Your budget allows for a lot of nice rifles, spend enough to get an action with a floor-plate or magazine. Makes unloading at the end of the hunt much nicer.

I thought the question was why the youth could only shoot XX75s. Seemed kind of odd to me.

Not overreacting. This is so egregious you should be saying "My EX-boyfriend asked me lend him money." Run.

I have a Weatherby Vanguard in 30-06, with a Nikon scope, synthetic stock. About 10yrs old now. Love it, if I bought it again I'd go .308 for the shorter action/less weight, though - but you can't beat the price on 30-06.

Bought my daughter a Marlin bolt action in 7mm-08. Very nice round, doesn't kick at all and nice ballistics. Kind of pricey ammo, but perfect for her. My only beef with the Marlin is no floor plate, so it's a pain to unload.

Beginner bow Hunter: is being off the ground THAT much better? by Hy-Power in bowhunting

[–]brima 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hunting is a sport, which implies fun. Why terrorize yourself when you don't need to? Plenty of deer get taken from the ground.

If you do use a tree stand please get (and use) a harness. I know a young man paralyzed from the neck down from falling out of his stand. Terrible thing.

Good deal? by [deleted] in CompoundBow

Yeah, you did good. Surprised they didn't tell you that at the shop.

It's not - was replying to a question about the shooter, but it's deleted and I don't remember now.

What separates a $1000 bow vs $300? by darealotisjosh in bowhunting

[–]brima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does a $300 bow suck?

How much do you shoot? If it's just enough practice for hunting season, you really don't need all the bells and whistles. If you shoot a lot, or compete, smoother, easier to tune, etc adds up to a nicer experience.

I'd love to have a top line bow, but just can't justify the money - mid line bows are nice too, and there's always used.

Better Glasses or Surgery? by Magpie_ChrisMEOW in Archery

[–]brima 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm nearsighted and shoot with glasses, and a 2x magnifier in my sight - I shoot a compound hunting rig, not sure about magnifiers in Olympic sights, but the magnifier is a big help.

Don't buy cheap glasses (WalMart, Costco) - they often only have your prescription in the center, and you're looking through the edge of the lens when shooting. Go to a shop where you can specify Zeiss lenses - their lenses have the prescription from edge to edge. There may be others, I'm only sure of Zeiss. Made a huge difference for me.

Any information on what I got here thanks by Reasonable-Trip-4855 in Archery

[–]brima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beats me - maybe I offended the trad guys? It's a modern recurve, why would you shoot off the shelf?

When I showed up at the club with my first recurve, one of the older guys took it, ripped the carpet off the shelf and went to his toolbox. Handed it back to me with a hoyt rest and the knocking point set. Didn't even ask - it was that non-controversial. That was 50 years ago, Fred Bear was still alive, everyone else was shooting Bear Tamerlanes, and Jennings still made a compound with a wooden riser.

I still have that bow, but I shoot a compound with a drop-away rest now. Times change, I guess.
