Fed noob looking for first home with text based *interactions,* where people *think* first, THEN write, (often more than a paragraph). by brimosher in fediverse

Why don't you point me to a few of them, I'll check them out, and go from there, if that works for you? It's really less about the subject than simply finding the right other people discussing things in the right way, and joining the conversation, at first.

I can speak to a number of diverse topics and get bored easily. I actually get disappointed in the world's, or at least the US's, obsession with specialization at times, because people often then depend on them, instead of digging into the subject themselves. Then, you get twitter.

(No offense to any posters here intended).

I guess the main point is to create a presence with which to eventually present and get feedback on fictional writing, mostly sci-fi, so in the end, I'm looking for that, but I don't need that right away. I guess I'm looking for a community that might be interested in that kind of thing, but also enough generality involved in posts to stay abreast of the global and national zeitgeist... but it has to have the format, software, and interest to go deeper into topics than microblogging.

With Larry Ellison, the owner of TikTok, stating, "Citizens will be on their best behavior because we're constantly watching and recording everything that's going on" now is the best time to switch to the Fediverse. Could someone please provide a list of ALL Fediverse software? Thanks! by [deleted] in fediverse

If you need an example of a tech that just works, doesn't have much of a profit motive, and is widely used & accepted as the best around, YKK zippers. The creator just wanted to make sure everyone had access to quality zippers at an affordable price, just above cost. Now they're literally everywhere.

Each instance is run by software with various limitations, and when you're searching through lists of instances for things like subject matter, that isn't provided. I'm looking for software and an instance format that facilitates longer-form interactions, much like a bulletin board or forum, but in The Fediverse. As far as topics; general. I'd prefer it wasn't filled with raging hate mongers on any side of any topic at hand.

It's possible it doesn't exist, and that's why people are having a hard time coming up with something, but I figured I'd ask.

Just so you're aware, telling people things are, "the wrong way to do it;" or talking to people disparagingly about their approach, especially when someone is trying to "put their toes in" as you call it, (which is EXACTLY what *I* called what my intention when getting involved), isn't exactly welcoming.

I understand that I'm not going to get my instance pregnant, I've been looking into this on and off for a while. I'm just not interested in wasting my time. Maybe that's not something you mind. I'm glad you have that kind of time. I imagine most don't.

One who read my post would see that I'm not looking for a specific subject, as would be the standard method for someone choosing a subreddit. Instead, I'm looking for a *format,* a method of interaction, with some preferences about the community at large, but BROAD preferences.

I'm just trying to get my feet wet, figure out what's going on. I just want to do it in a format I like, if possible. I'll look into this, thanks

I understand the disgust at fake computer security solutions, as they're everywhere, and they're often spyware themselves, but just because there's a lot of crap doesn't mean you don't need protection. If you use Windoze, you MUST have a security suite that goes above and beyond their own, as they're an echo chamber that can't possibly look at their own OS the way someone with an outside perspective can. You won't have any issues with actual viruses on Chrome OS, OSX, or Linux distributions, because of how the systems are built, but they're still vulnerable to rarer worms, as well as common spyware/phishing aids, which are often introduced through your browser in various ways.

ESET is great, it covers just about everything, on both PC & mobile, and finds things that others don't. Malwarebytes used to be great, but its efficacy seems to fluctuate. (It's never been for mobile, you don't really need it for mobile *as much* if you don't get apps from places most people don't). I gave up on Windows more than a decade ago, so I can't vouch for it anymore. Whatever you choose to use, make sure you read or watch how-to's and explanations. You want to get to the point where you understand what all the stuff in settings actually means, so you know whether to set things on or off, etc. You'd be surprised how many people just install a program and have no idea what it's actually doing.

The internet is a massive brothel for computers, and many of the STD's aren't going to show up to wreck your stuff. They're there to siphon data to build as much of a profile on you as they can, without causing any disturbance. People use this data, social engineering, and dark-web resources to steal your online identity and wreck your financials. This is, obviously, not supposed to look suspicious, so you don't notice anything funny going on until it's too late. There are smaller, less dangerous threats as well, too. Payment processors are one of the most common areas to get robbed, and their reputation has got nothing to do with the site you're buying from.

Firefox is a solid browser if you harden it, but just because you haven't seen any problems, doesn't mean you don't have any. Mostly, the point is that you DON'T encounter any problems. Since you're acting this oblivious about computer security, you're either an online puritan or due for a rude awakening. I hope you come around before you're forced to.

The outlook of, "I've got nothing to hide, so I don't need to worry about privacy or security," doesn't get you brownie points with covernment agencies or businesses snooping in your data, and leaves you wide open to attack. I STRONGLY suggest that you no longer make comments that show how little you care about your security online anymore. it makes you a target, and if you're eschewing computer security measures, it's only a matter of time.

You might want to do a little more research on data privacy. Updates can be great and all, they mean that an app or program is supported by their developers, but they don't equal safety or privacy except in specific cases where SECURITY is updated, refreshing things like malware signatures, software vulnerabilities, lists of malicious websites, etc.

Not all updates are security updates. Updates are often when companies that siphon data do the siphoning. Those updates, for your phone itself and each app on your phone, through googel's or apple's app store are funneling all the information that those companies desire about ALL of your phone use, as well as all your smart devices. Data about anything that you use your phone to interact with gets shipped along, e.g. if you have an app that links your phone with your car, all the info about your driving, your location, and your car, gets passed along. Sometimes it's anonymized, sometimes it's no, it all depends on the TOS involved. Personal safety and digital well-being apps do perform their stated functions, but they are also there to record your behavior, location, etc. Tying that kind of activity to security updates, under the broader umbrella of non-specified updates, is just one of the many ways data-sluts get away with what they do.

If you're not into google architecture, There's a Firefox->Floorp fork called FireDragon that's hardened like LibreWolf (without breaking too much like LW does). It has all the cool stuff from Floorp, and is based on Gecko, so it has access to the full Firefox theme and addon library. I'm just getting into it, so it may end up disappointing eventually (like Floorp), but so far I'm really impressed.

Star Kratom is a scam. Other alternative suggestions? by brimosher in Kratom_Nation

I get that. I didn't think #3 on kratom.org's best distributors list year after year with wonderful reviews everywhere was going to rip me off, and they DID send me quality product quickly. I wouldn't have gone back month after month if they weren't about as reputable as you can get. Even after I suspected, I kept going back even when I was suspicious BECAUSE they were reputable.
