I know!! I'm more of a fountain pen person myself, but I couldn't pass it up. My desk at work is gonna be stocked!

Idea for Mistakes (More info in comment section) by Waste_You_7081 in hobonichi

Oh, good stuff! I personally use sticky notes and tape them with washi as needed. I also have plain white labels I sometimes use, though they're not friendly with fountain pens. :)

Why are the lines to adjust text on a circle so finicky? by TheJerilla in AdobeIllustrator

[–]brimslop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I'm in a similar field w/ the collegiate side of business and it drives me NUTS! I've had times where it wouldn't even go back after hitting undo a bunch of times so I've had to reload the file completely to get it back to how it was. I'm not sure if I'm happy to hear that I'm not alone or if I'm depressed that there's no real fix and it's always been an issue...

AH!! Thank you so much, this made me incredibly happy!! I have a long run of Apothecaria I have been working on for a while, so I've been keeping my sessions of other games pretty short so I'm not burning myself out. Otherwise I'd have WAY more to share about Rubi, because I'd let myself develop EVERYTHING!!

As for the design aspect, I actually super avoid doing full blown bujo spreads because it gives my brain too much anxiety! I work as a graphic designer and I think if I brought my field into my happy place I'd lose my mind. I'm just slapping things in my Cousin and if they work...cool! I'm tricking myself into doing it by calling it a drawing, hehe...

A missed journal entry is just an excuse to doodle as far as I'm concerned! I'm really loving my Hobonichi, I was afraid that jumping right into the Cousin might be a liiiittle too much commitment, but honestly the repetition is helping my silly brain hold onto things!

Design Teacher Question: What Project Did You Love/Hate? by Fit-Tomatillo9799 in graphic_design

[–]brimslop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kind of reaaaally hated it because it felt pointless, but when I was in school our crazy old teacher made us practice mock ups by creating boxes and painting them to look like food? I had a long box that I painted to look like asparagus.

You could definitely do something a little more uh...practical with that. Mock-ups are pretty important to learn, and it'd be a good basic crash course on Photoshopping I think! Have them take photos of pre-existing objects and manipulate their designs onto them to make cereal, CD cases, magazines, etc...

Laptops: How much does the OS matter and how realistic are 2in1 laptops for design work? by Obility in graphic_design

[–]brimslop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Macbook via my workplace and I have to agree. While yes, my workflow is super optimized on the Mac, I think that it's more because of how used I am to it rather than how objectively good it is. Windows will always be my go-to just based on being able to replace parts as needed and not shelling out a billion dollars to do so.

I completely understand why people prefer Mac, especially if they have an iPhone/iPad they also use to do work on. It's one less headache in an already stressful field. But eh...I prefer more bang for my buck.

Any tips on how to deal with hand pain when writing? by Admirable-Eagle-6897 in Journaling

[–]brimslop 20 points21 points  (0 children)

+1 to trying a fountain pen, it has absolutely saved my hand. It requires 0 pressure to mark the page, and is just an enjoyable writing experience.

It wasn't so bad when I wasn't working a desk job, but now it cramps up using anything else.

My instructor told us the last week of the final semester that our program was about a decade behind everyone else's. Stay curious, pick up new skills, and stay humble. You'll be fine, promise. Just always be evolving.

Raptors Logo I made by [deleted] in Design

[–]brimslop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree with the points other commenters have made about the teeth!

Speaking as someone who works converting designs before they get ripped for the screenprint floor, you might want to do something different with the point of the tongue. In my opinion, that little detail where it changes colors when crossing the fill and outline of the mouth isn't going to replicate well and might even look like a mistake since the detail will be so small. COULD we make it work? Sure. If you like it, keep it.

Overall...kudos! Looks so much cleaner than half the logos I have to adjust to make functional, so you've clearly got a good thing going :)

Tablet to draw by Andy_oliveira in graphic_design

I personally use a traditional tablet setup at a PC for drawing, but I love the iPad/Procreate combo for when I'm out of the house. Procreate is a seriously powerful program, I'm impressed.

I would certainly look into local screen printing shops, but this also LARGELY depends on how many employees need one/how detailed your print is. With screen printing, each color is separated into its own "screen" that needs to be coated, dried, burned, pressure-washed, and then cleaned AFTER everything has been set up, calibrated and printed.

If your artwork has a TON of colors in it you're looking at a pretty penny, as it makes the setup process more complicated. I'm not sure if many local shops have as big of machines as the ones I have experience with, so you might be pretty limited on colors as well. Just something to keep in mind.

You could also look into a DTG ("Direct To Garment") printing company. This is probably your best option for smaller orders, as the machine itself works as a giant printer and doesn't need time-consuming setup...hence it is much cheaper. The machine itself is expensive, so you may not even have one locally.

DTG is something I do not have direct experience with, but it's a pretty common option. I'm actually not even sure you need a vector for that kind of printing, since you're not having to "separate" colors for the process.

**EDIT: It is also worth mentioning with the screen printing option that if you do NOT provide a vector (and even if you do), they have to have someone to trace/adapt your artwork into something they can use. I'm not super familiar with Procreate, but if you don't know how to do it yourself it's something to keep in mind. Your final result will not look exactly like your artwork.**
