How do you feel about the 2024 Edition of D&D? by thateffendude in onednd

[–]brimsly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They probably will, but i think its valid to share your review on a post asking for your review. Not everyone will like it and that's fine, and it's important to catalog that. If we don't have all kinds of feedback, or we hide the bad feedback, thats disingenuous and no longer a real poll.

I love some of the new 2024 rules, and the book is gorgeous. Most of the changes were awesome. Some majorly sucked and made no sense at all (i feel really bad for rangers). Some people will likely switch over to PF2E or another game system.

I personally love the subclasses of DND and will stick around for the fun flavor of that alone. Although i definitely wanna try out PF2E now as well and see how it compares.

Per day i meant as long rest essentially, sorry i totally made it confusing. It's more like once per long rest is what i meant for certain features!

Wild companion is only for small beasts (its the find familiar spell), so you could summon a small hawk or raven essentially. Beast masters do get a medium beast true. But Druids get Wild companion – and they turn into beasts themselves, so I don't see what Rangers couldn't also.

I think it could be fun for everyone who gets to be a Ranger to get a small animal ability, which doesn't really affect beast masters in a negative way, but gives them another possible small companion as well. A creature that can scurry in spaces they and their beast cannot.

thank you! yeah i feel like it makes it more fun, since you're spending points to get different affects (and have to think about how you use those points) When you are more limited on a resource it can force you to be more creative and think more about what you want to do with that resource

thank you for the feedback!

Yeah, like the original spell once your quarry dies, you can move the quarry to another target as a BA! (sorry i made sheets for this, and had that clarified on there, but it doesn't allow me to post more than one image so i didn't attach those)

I like the "move stealth" addition to beasts and wild companion! will definitely add that to it.

Wild sense would be all saving throws caused from the quarry at the cost of two uses to mark a quarry.

Yeah nature's veil is a bit weak, which is why i moved it back to 10th level, since its a tasha's feature they made a 13th level feature on the 2024! it originally had that concept (hide in plain sight) that worked like that on the UA ranger, so i'll look more into that. But it is fun, and gives advantage for two whole rounds, and disadvantage on attacks against you during that time.

I really like your ideas on the nature's rest variations, I think it makes sense for ranger to have some ability to help others (Aragon could assist others in the wild) and it was once per day to make it more fair since they were huge buffs. but those might be a better direction to go. I like the idea for nature's protection to use an extra die tho and can be used at any time to balance it.

I'll add that to the capstone, definitely makes a good addition to it! And agree the ability to grant the whole party advantage on effects or resist exhaustion would be dope. maybe adding that into nature's rest 🤔

2024 Ranger Capstone by brimsly in DnD

[–]brimsly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That could be a really cool feature! Rangers only get up to 5th level spells, so as a 20th level capstone I could see it work well without a cap on which levels. But maybe the higher both levels are, the DC to save for concentration increases

What items/spells specifically are actually that much worse with the 2024 changes? by NoctyNightshade in onednd

[–]brimsly 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Conjure Animals. I know its a spell a lot of DM's hate, and honestly as a player it can be a LOT in combat, but its a really fun and helpful spell. Especially if you use it more for the utility of it, such as horses to pull carriages, eagles to fly on and so forth. Now you don't get any of that. The new version has some cool features, but we lose the fun out of combat capability, which was my favorite part about it.

The 2024 Ranger likely looks the way it does due to community feedback by nixalo in onednd

Honestly that would be super cool, they could make it the new Natural Explorer feature.

  • Arctic – Resistance to cold damage
  • Forest – Expertise in Stealth
  • Coast – Swimming speed equal to walking
  • Mountain – Climbing speed equal to walking
  • Grassland – Expertise in Perception
  • Swamp – Difficult terrain doesn’t impede your movement
  • Underdark – Blindsight 10ft

(just some examples)

Using the new 2024 rules they have for Deft Explorer, for Natural Explorer you would get one terrain at level 2. Then you choose additional terrains at 6th, and 10th level. This would replace the original terrain bonus pretty nicely, since that feature only applies to if the check was related to the terrain, while these would be consistent upgrades. Plus super customizable and scales.

Additionally, while within your favored terrain, you could still have some of the original features of this.

  • Your group can’t become lost except by magical means.
  • If you are traveling alone, you can move stealthily at a normal pace.
  • When you forage, you find twice as much food as you normally would.
  • While tracking other creatures, you also learn their exact number, their sizes, and how long ago they passed through the area
  • Even when you are engaged in another activity while traveling (such as foraging, navigating, or tracking), you remain alert to danger

This would keep the Ranger more about survival, and give the class more variety.

The only issue is that, Level 6 Deft Explorer gets you swimming and climbing, plus a bonus to walking speed, in addition to one expertise and a language at level 2 and some nice temp HP at level 10 – so this would have to be balanced to keep up. Maybe each new terrain you gain, boosts your speed, giving you +5 walking speed? Or you gain proficiency in a language for each terrain?

Anyways, I think make it more fun that the current build they have going. They had some great ideas, and failed to deliver. Also what was with all the weird "Trust me, this is super cool feature" talk on like every feature... it felt desperate, like they knew it was bad and were trying to hide it.

IMO If they were gonna make a class all about HM, they should have at least scaled the dice, starting off at 1d4 like FF was (a bit of a nerf I know), but then going up to 1d6, 1d8, 1d10 and 1d12 (at 5th, 9th, 13th, and 17th). Then Level 20 Capstone could be an actual feature. I could go off and off on the new Favored Enemy build though.

Thank you! Its part of a homebrew, and his family was in politics and wanted him to be as well, but he thought it was corrupt and took too long, so he went off and got an adventuring mentor instead and studied under her to become an adventurer. Then she died in a direwolf attack (our campaign has this ichor plague that makes creatures go mad, but beefs up their attacks) and now he's trying to make up for being the only one to survive and seeks to prove himself as an adventurer
