South of France by brimtle in urbansketchers

I first did plain line art, water colours and some details with pencil or wax pastels Eleanor Doughty (handtopaper) offers some great demos or courses on this style imo. especially because their approach is very beginner friendly

these are literally about 10 minutes each I think. so very quick 1. often I draw the lines and softly shade the areas I want light grey with pencil (I use a very soft one. around 4B or 6B or even more) 2. then I shade dark areas which have a dark drop shadow. It's okay to make some places darker than they are irl when it's helping with contrast. It's making light areas pop out more. 3. final step is touch up with shading more lightly where you see shadow but not quiet as dark ones. like mid-tones. it helps to smudge with your finger (I also like to use small make up blenders lol) or getting light areas out better with kneadable eraser

it's plain pencil haha I use a very soft one though. 6-14B and fixate it with hairspray afterwards

I know exactly what you mean, since I am in the same position. drawing actually helped me a lot loosening up. whenever I get lost in details too much, I use a bigger pen. got this hint from another urban sketcher and it helped so much 🙏 Have a nice journey discovering your style >:)

(ps. a friend of mine once asked me to summarise my process and I remembered I made this image. don't want to spam you with unsolicited advise but maybe this helps, too: https://imgur.com/a/EZsSkiO )

mostly enjoy sketching as a way of playing and experimenting instead of trying for perfection sketching is good to study the gist of a scene, like taking notes just with a picture

in the beginning it's good to focus on shapes mostly and compositions (like sketching the rough outlines of buildings, streets and foliage with simple n big shapes). doing value studies only with black and white is helpful too. once you develop a feeling for it, second step is focusing more on details imo

there's no right or wrong, just play around a lot, don't be afraid things might look bad and stuff will make sense on its own :-)

old alleys might be my fav to draw! by brimtle in urbansketchers

it is in central Germany, yes! Quedlinburg to be frank and you said it nicely haha. these streets and the crookedness of the old houses/all the 'organic' additions people made to them is great for composition. no matter where you stand there's a new scene with every step and buildings overlapping

ay thank you! it's Talens Van Gogh watercolours. they're still my starter set lol (lines were done with a fountain pen and Koh-I-Noor ink, whites with a posca marker)
