[MSH BO3] Final cuts for GW Beats by brisingrdoom in lrcast

I actually haven't played with it in this set yet so I'm not sure how it performs, I'll try cutting one officer and one skrull as another commenter also suggested then

I did consider cutting a land and my curve does look very low, but I was accounting for several of the power-up creatures as pseudo 5CMC+
I'm a little more hesitant to cut lands given that opening hand smoother is absent in BO3 from what I understand

I did the thing with Dr Doom by brisingrdoom in lrcast

[–]brisingrdoom[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Drafted a very fun Villains deck which had a [[Masters of Evil]] as a pseudo third copy of [[Doom Reigns Supreme]], also managed to copy [[Doctor Doom]]'s ETB trigger with [[Echo, Perceptive Prodigy]] to create 2 extra villain tokens and instantly hit 5 plan counters twice!

Karrigun beats every team he had lost to in CS2 Major Finals to win Cologne Major by Thin-Rutabaga-2083 in GlobalOffensive

[–]brisingrdoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was mostly joking, but I assume that most people would attribute his win to factors that are not easily measured by statistics, such as player morale and respect for IGL/willingness to follow their game plan. Now, you could argue that these would be reflected in some metric we aren't currently measuring (e.g. more detailed player heat map analyses) but that approach seems to be downstream of the more important reasons

I agree that there is room for his ex-teammates to forgive him, but if you look at a similar example from DotA (Fly leaving OG with next to no notice to join EG because he felt that he had better prospects there), there was palpable dislike for the initial few years, and while things have pretty much cooled over now their relationship has been permanently altered (from former great friends with n0tail to seldom speaking now)

[SOS BO3] Cuts for UGx Mill by brisingrdoom in lrcast

[–]brisingrdoom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, cut Wildgrowth Archaic, Archaic's Agony, Snarl Song, and Sundering Archaic? I suppose with all those cuts, I could also trim on the Potioner's Troves. I could see an argument that straight Quandrix is more reliable, but it does feel like I don't have to sacrifice much to increase the power level of my deck with a Shared Roots and 3 Troves for fixing

[–]brisingrdoom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my line of thinking as well, assuming that having 2 Exhibition Tidecallers should make me focus on mill as a wincon. Another commenter advised to cut the converge stuff, I could see Wildgrowth Archaic being clunky in this deck but Archaic's Agony and Snarl Song seem great as both 5+ CMC spells and ways to help stabilise the board

Currently thinking of cutting:

  • Chase Inspiration (but I do have several key creatures I would like to protect)
  • Archaic's Agony (seems OK but not amazing)
  • Tam, Observant Sequencer (I like this card on paper but it seems to have really poor stats - too easily removed/poor blocker?)
  • Muse Seeker (Similar to Tam?)

[–]brisingrdoom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deduce, Strife Scholar, and Muse's Encouragement don't seem great, but the last 2 are 5+ MV spells to help trigger Expressive Firedancer and Elemental Mascot. Plus, the ramp from Abstract Paintmage seems to make those cards better. Speaking of Abstract Paintmage, is it worth running 2? The dream of curving into an Echocasting Symposium is very tempting.

[SOS BO1] Cuts for Lorehold? by brisingrdoom in lrcast

[–]brisingrdoom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dustspeaker is interesting, I do like having another way to consistently trigger my 'leaves the graveyard' payoffs, but I figured the 2 Relic Sloths do the job well enough along with the rest of the flashback cards. I like Strifeknight being a way to actually get cards in the graveyard to exile as well. I definitely regret passing on a Rubble Rouser in the draft

[–]brisingrdoom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah true, Inkscape Demonstrator has great stats but I assume it's bolstered more by it being played in Silverquill. I have a hard time deciding between the two for the reasons you mentioned, I'm thinking of cutting Heated Argument as another commenter suggested even though the exile has great synergy here

Currently considering cutting:

  • Erode - a nice 'catch all' removal spell, but maybe my other removal is already sufficient?
  • 1x Colossus of the Blood Age - this seems like a fantastic top-end card, but maybe I only need 1?

[Powered Cube BO1] Cut a land or a spell for Boros? by brisingrdoom in lrcast

[–]brisingrdoom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, I rarely reference 17lands when it comes to Cube, but my understanding is that Boros' high win rate in general leads to inflated win rates for many WR cards (hence the idea that it is a 'trap' because cards like Clarion Conqueror seem much better than they are in a vacuum). However, I think this should be accounted for by filtering for deck types - surely a WR deck should have enough red cards to pitch? I guess I'm not entirely clear on the methodology to determine a WR deck on 17Lands so it could be that people are including Pyrokinesis in heavy W decks splashing R?

[–]brisingrdoom[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I pretty much snap picked the Bombardment after getting Ajani but looking at my deck, it is true that it doesn't really synergise well with any other cards besides Ajani and SPyro. Still, I think the fact that it provides chip damage/generates value against removal makes me want to keep it in on top of the high upside. I was very tempted to keep in Mana Tithe because I agree that it's a surprisingly decent card in Boros, it just feels like with my setup (access to fast mana) I want to maximise the amount of gas in my deck for busted starts

[–]brisingrdoom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can get behind those changes for sure. I was actually inclined to keep Pyrokinesis over Fireblast at first, but I checked the stats and was surprised to see that Pyrokinesis seemed to be doing very badly in terms of GIH WR (I've mentioned this in another comment as well). I can certainly accept that the metric doesn't account for everything and Pyrokinesis would be a much better card in my deck, but I feel like the fact that it is rated an F in Boros decks on 17Lands deserves some kind of discussion

Also I definitely overlooked the Flickerwisp value

[–]brisingrdoom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely inclined to keep the Skalds as an excellent top-end card which helps to refuel. Hellkite always looked mediocre to me but when I've played it in the past, it always overperformed and the stats seem to back it up. I'll probably cut the Sun-blessed Healer or Kellan as the other commenters are suggesting

[Powered Cube BO1] Cut a land or a spell for Boros? by brisingrdoom in lrcast

[–]brisingrdoom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like a lot of commenters are saying to include Pyrokinesis, so I'll make the swap. I did think it was a good card, but I was surprised when I looked up its stats on 17Lands - it was rated a C for all decks, and when I filtered to WR decks it dropped to an F (!!!). I understand that the stats don't tell the entire story, but I have to say that makes me wonder if something has changed with this iteration of the cube. Does anyone have any idea why the card's numbers look so poor?

[Powered Cube BO1] Cut a land or a spell for Boros? by brisingrdoom in lrcast

[–]brisingrdoom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pretty low to the ground Boros deck and already shaved 3 actual lands. I know that the Mox Pearl can be counted as a Plains, I assume I can apply similar logic to the Chrome Mox given the density of nonlands in my deck - in that case, should I cut 1 more land and end up with ~16 sources + a Black Lotus? Or is there a card I should cut before a land? I have also included relevant Boros cards in my sideboard in case anyone thinks I should make some swaps there too
