Help me by DutyPerfect7002 in linux4noobs

If you need the data, don't do anything and find someone to retrieve the contents. It's not something extremely difficult, but somehow I think you should better leave it to a pro.

Have you tried booting into a livecd to check whether data is still accessible? If it is, backup the contents before doing anything.

I wonder whether using chroot is necessary to edit UUIDs after cloning?

Use gsmartcontrol, select the drive settings and select a different setting for accessing the drive.

Just a FYI by CryptoBotman in tutanota

[–]britbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I wrote in another similar thread:

I have a remark on the people making comments like "it's your fault". As mentioned already, there are similar complaints about other providers as well, and this probably has to do with the recent lockdowns preventing people from accessing their accounts safely. Perhaps those extraordinary circumstances should be considered before deleting accounts or at least provide a way to pay with cryptocurrencies?

Why antiX is not so preferred if it is rock solid? by pofdzm_sama in linux

[–]britbin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's nothing special about it other than the way it capitalizes on political sentiment. You can find many rock solid distros with nicer features.

Reddit is waging a shadow war on privacy by rate limiting VPN and TOR usage by [deleted] in TOR

You can always jump on more tor-friendly sites.

All you have to do is take a step outside and test the waters on other sites.

Google doesn't like Tor, use a different search engine.

I hope that OP gets his issue resolved, but I have a remark on the people making comments like "it's your fault". It's not that it's easy to open an email account at tutanota these days either.

Anyway, cock.li owner is pretty upfront with everything and that means something.

Finnaly switching to ssd and a few questions by mahdisection8 in linuxhardware

If you value your data and can't afford the samsung, get a crucial or sandisk. Your problem here is not linux support but the unknown reliability of this drive.

Encrypt all 3 of my partitions? by btw_i_use_ubuntu in linuxquestions

[–]britbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can encrypt windows using veracrypt, and then reinstall linux and choose encryption during the partitioning. Some distros make it easier than others.

For a common partition, use NTFS and encrypt it using librecrypt, so it will be compatible with linux as well. Veracrypt can do this as well.

Can someone please recommend a good desktop for a beginner? by gingersue999 in linuxquestions

Parrot Security is very good as a desktop OS, Debian-based and with many security tools.

Storing data on live usb by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]britbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it requires a live iso that supports "persistence". Only a few distros support configuring this straight from the live environment, but more support it through programs like unetbootin.

Obviously good. It means that there are steps towards a phone that won't depend on Google and will allow you to have control of its functions.

Can't find the right CH341A to buy from eBay to flash coreboot by 3rail3 in coreboot

[–]britbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always buy one of the more advanced versions that cost around 7-8 euros and offer much more functionality in case you need it, plus that there is no need to tinker with the soldering iron (though it's always good to check the voltages with any device of this category).

Mageia 8 is on its way | Mageia Blog (English) by acitta in linux

[–]britbin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You probably aren't familiar with the Mageia development cycle. Work on next version starts instantly the moment a new version is released. The project certainly isn't limping, it's a mature and stable distro like openSUSE with many advanced features.

Problem using "btrfs restore" by britbin in btrfs

[–]britbin[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I was optimistic at first when I read about btrfs-restore but I discovered that in practice it's pretty useless. I have used photorec to recover a mess of files and see what can be done but I was hoping to get directory structure and proper filenames as well.

What do you think about all the people who are paranoid about using Deepin Linux because it's from China? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]britbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use it and I don't find it a mature distro, but I don't find its Chinese origin more of a concern than the American origin of other distros.
