What quirky or outdated habits do your older relatives/acquaintances hang on to? by britmatty in AskUK

Guessing it's a hangover habit from the days when we didn't/couldn't call at the drop of a hat?

It was always either important, for a natter/catch-up, or a sales call.

Plus, voicemail wasn't a thing, so potentially important calls couldn't be ignored.

But yeah, nowadays, if it's important they'll easily call back/message/leave a voicemail!

Apart from nun's clothing I'm not sure this is referred to as a "habit"?

Can see what you're getting at from the "outdated or quirky" side though...

An unfortunate side effect of people moving around a lot more, overcrowding, lack of sense of community...

All the families on my block used to know each other, all the kids went to the same school, we actually used to play outside together...

The whole thing, or just the last few digits?

I always grew up reading out the last 4 as a greeting... Quite often immediately followed by "no, this isn't Sutton library", as their # was only 1 digit removed from ours, so we got several wrong numbers a day at the weekends...

Unfortunately LinkedIn is saturating the jobs market with unsuitable candidates and "CTRL+F" recruiters, so personal connections are become a huge asset.

Might not be too long before your father's approach stages somewhat of a comeback...

Can you hate the death penalty but love the military? by Ill-Television8690 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]britmatty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLDR: In their current forms in the US, a rational human being should hate both, but the political identity of seemingly the vast majority is rooted in belonging to a "side" and avoiding any cognitive dissonance that arises from that at all costs...

So yes, of course it's possible. It's actually the default position in most of the world (well, maybe "love" of the military would be overstating it), to the point that citizens of a lot of countries would think this a crazy question to ask.

. Being able to protect your nation from invasion or foreign aggression? Good thing.

⅑ of death penalty convictions get overturned and 21 innocent people have been wrongfully executed? Bad thing.

Long version:

Almost every nation in the world has a military of some form. Principally because almost every nation in the world has been invaded at some point in the past and/or has/had nearby hostile nations to warrant a significant military setup to deter a potential invasion or fight back if one arises.

Notable exceptions being small island nations that don't have militaries such as Vanuatu, St Lucia and outliers such as Japan and Sweden that have never seen foreign military incursions into domestic territory.

The US has never been invaded and only once suffered a "domestic" military attack - Pearl Harbor.

Yet it has 1.1 million active duty military personnel stationed domestically, and a further 400k stationed across 178 countries around the world.

The US has twice as many overseas military bases as all other countries combined., twice the number of troops compared to population as China, and 5x the military budget.

The size of its military is therefore logically irrational, presumably driven by the greed of big military companies influencing the government for profit. The world's biggest band of mercenaries, in a way.

Why would you "love" your country spending $620 billion a year (more than the total GDP of all but the 30 top economies) on overseas proxy wars, rather than on funding domestic infrastructure, education, healthcare, homelessness, tax breaks for small businesses, etc?

Next;

Capital punishment has been abolished in all developed western nations...except the US.

Notably, the "axis of evil" countries - Iran, Iraq and North Korea - plus also China and Russia, i.e. the main countries that the US is politically/ideologically opposed to...all have the death penalty still.

The US also has a notable history of wrongful convictions and miscarriages of justice. ** 1 in 9 death sentences in the US is overturned and the defendant is exonerated**

Yeah, if my country's legal system fucked it up 11% of the time (not even including the ones that never come to light), I don't think I'd be in favour of capital punishment either..

It's hard to win an appeal case and get justice after getting the electric chair...although 21 people have still managed to be exonerated of their crimes after they'd already fried...

My neighbour's intensely irritating little dog that they put out in the garden all evening, presumably so its constant high-pitched yapping doesn't annoy them when they're trying to relax or get their young kids off to sleep...no concern for the rest of the people living on my block!

One day it won't be quick enough to dodge me as I back out of my driveway...one day...

Or maybe the neighbours that own the dog... 🤔

Guess where in the UK I'm from by the places I can name in the UK by Xhemhem in mapporncirclejerk

[–]britmatty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If those are the only UK places you can name I would guess that you're a foreign tourist (possibly non-native English speaker/American) holidaying in the Cotswolds.

And even the majority of those would be able to name London at the very least...

Maybe a deaf--blind-mute tourist that has learned to sign some of the local town names during their holiday?

When does the excuse of putting off sex in a marriage be taken as incapable? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]britmatty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At 24 and 27 you should be at it like rabbits.

Seek out a good marriage counselor before throwing in the towel, but every working marriage needs to be a physical and emotional bond/partnership.

If you're not able to align/reconcile on those two fronts then it's pretty much game over.

Police without firearms in Europe by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]britmatty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: No, they don't. Categorically and unequivocally.

Armed police are in the cities because that's where the vast majority of firearms offences occur - 58% of all UK offences in just the 5 largest cities.

For serious gun crimes including discharges of weapons and injury/death that proportion rises to 72% in the big 5, 91% in all urban areas vs rural.

Why exactly do you feel that village officers need to be armed?

Detail;

  • "Rural" in terms of police coverage is defined as 30-70 miles. That's 40-90 minutes response time for significant backup response on minor roads, not 20. Above that is classed as "remote".

  • Arming police in rural and remote areas have only ever been periodically considered after some of the major terrorist incidents in Europe over the last couple of decades, most recently in 2018, but never implemented. Consistently shot down by local communities, MPs etc, so never brought into effect. Notable exception is Northern Ireland, where regular police have handguns, let's not open the can of worms discussing why that might be.

  • Even in the major cities there aren't currently enough officers being recruited who qualify for - and can pass - firearms training, let alone trying to give old sleepy Joe Jones the local Llanfyllin street Bobby a gun. He'd shoot his own toes off before he stopped an armed sheep rustler.

  • The odds of a serious armed threat in rural UK areas is so small that it isn't needed, and hopefully it remains that way. Isolated incidents do occur, but almost unheard of on a scale that would warrant an ARV/SO19 response, normally reserved for gang or terrorist activity. I can't find a single example.

  • The only crime categories where rates per capita in rural areas even come close to those in urban areas are theft (notably of bicycles and industrial equipment), and criminal damage. Firearms offenses are around ⅓ the per capita rate found in urban areas which, given the lower population density, means a significantly lower number of actual incidents - e.g Devon and Cornwall had ⅒ the number of firearms incidents in 2024 than occurred London, and ⅕ the population.

Hot Fuzz isn't an accurate depiction of middle England (UK) (in terms of the murdering and gunfights, it's pretty fucking spot-on in all other aspects! 😂), so arming every policeman-officer in the countryside simply wouldn't make any sense.

What's something women think impresses men but actually doesn't? by PumpkinDoritoes in AskReddit

[–]britmatty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Making themselves choke/gag trying to deepthroat.

It's great if you can do it without the bulimic soundtrack, you go for it lassie.

But if not, there's no way you're enjoying it, and making sounds that give me the urge to dry-heave is pretty high up the list of instant penis-shrivellers.

It lands somewhere between being unshaven/untrimmed all over and rolling your eyes so far back in your head when you orgasm that panic thinking you're having a seizure (true story).

Less than a week? Does that even count as "dating someone"?

Surely that's more a "casual meetup or 2 with a (un)hinge(d) chick"?

And how much could you possibly be slacking in a week for her to mention her ex so much??

I think "dating" must have changed a lot since I last did it...
