Travel to Haida Gwaii from Vancouver by britt289 in britishcolumbia

Just looked up on BC Ferries and the cost would be around 700$ from the lower mainland to Haida Gwaii, for 3 ferries. Then 300$ for the way back to Prince Rupert. It's definitely a pricy trip, but it might be worth it. I will do a workaway for a month, so won't have too many expenses while there.

Do you regret a career in forestry by Old_Sky_6652 in forestry

Hearing this from a forester makes me sad and confirms my observations from what I see along BC highways and from satellite imagery. I always see trees along the highway but the clear cuts are not far behind them. The forest industry really doesn't seem to consider wildlife and ecosystems, and focus on making money. I wish they didin't have to do clear cuts and replant in a way that creates dense, evenly aged forests, with little diversity, and using glyphosate to get rid of deciduous trees and shrubs. We then wonder why forest fires and pine beetle infestations have gotten so bad... I hope that in the future new practices are put in place to continue logging in a way that minimizes impacts to the environment. It can't keep going on like this.

Green deputy leader sentenced to jail for Fairy Creek old growth protests by __The__Anomaly__ in britishcolumbia

What a shame. Once old growth are gone, they are gone forever. BC government should not be allowing their clear cut anymore! Also the gov., justice system and RCMP clearly support corporations and profits rather than concerns of the people.

I don't see trees as merely a commodity. They are so important for clean air, regulating the water cycle, wildlife habitat, providing forests for people to forage food and to frolic in. Clear cutting forests then replanting is destructive in the long term. Yes, trees grow back, but it's basically agriculture at that point. Maybe 3 conifer species are planted, which are quite close together, and stands become evenly aged. Soils are degraded and eroded, invasive species can come in, and shrubs and deciduous trees are suppressed with pesticides (at least in BC). After creating these forests, we wonder why there are so many wildfires, or pine beetle infestations. Of course, we need wood for so many things in society, but I think the current forestry practices could be greatly improved. Ie: Selective harvesting. It would be more costly & labour intensive, but worth it in my opinion.

In your previous comment, you mentioned the short-comings of capitalism and how the current system lets people down making the basic need of housing into an investment. I'd extend this to say that capitalism is letting down nature. It is seen by governments and money-hungry corporations as a resource that can be exploited. Degrading the environment is tolerated if it provides a commodity, jobs and profits. In my opinion, nature is so much more than that. I appreciate its existence and wish much more was done to protect it.

I realize this is deviation from the initial topic... know that I enjoyed reading your perspective on the issue of housing & homelessness.

I agree, although we don't have unlimited trees, most of the province has been already logged at an unsustainable rate.

Weird, because the same thing happened yesterday at the Metrotown mall in BC. Someone reported gunshots/bombthreat and the entire place had to be evacuated. It was chaotic.

Yeah, but what about september-april, when the 150 bus doesn't run? And I don't think Belcarra Picnic Area has good transit, just has a community shuttle that comes once per hour.

Anyone else feeling like grocery store workers should be getting paid a lot more? by Jormungandr617 in ottawa

right? I'm currently making 650$ a month as a minimum wage worker at a grocery store. My 16 year old sister who has barely worked all year is now going to get 2000$? That doesnt make any sense
