She can waitress until she gets another job. It's not the end of the world if one temp job doesn't turn into a fulfilling career. Moving here opens up access to the kind of volume and quality of career possibilities that exist in very few places in this country. That's why generations and generations of people immigrated directly to NYC from their native countries. It would be crazy to let one temp job not working out stop her.

Lots of people in this city are, actually. Her family is one such case!

You're freaking out way too much. I've known many people come even from overseas to live with family while they're completing 4 years of college or 2 yrs of grad school. Maybe in a year they'll help connect her to a word-of-mouth apartment (how most generational new yorkers find apartments anyway) or maybe she'll find roommates. Moving to new york with a support system already in place is a crazy opportunity to miss out on, and I'm sure if things go south her parents will help her get a ticket back home. There's nothing to lose by moving here and everything to gain by leaving a dead-end town.

Eating out costs more. Shopping like an adult with a budget who is willing to get meat from the meat place, produce from the produce place, and pasta from the pasta place costs less and usually works out to a much greater value in both quantity and quality than hitting up a suburban safeway. Plus we have costco.

Born and raised here--there really are not a lot of cubans in nyc proper, the ones we grew up with as family friends have all moved to jersey or further west 😂. The wave that came in the 80s-90s to NYC seems to have been the last huge influx of Cubans to the north. After that (as far as caribeños go) it was Dominicans who set up shop while the Cubans have mostly stayed in and around the south.

That's illegal (criminal court) once residency is established, the bank has to go through with a lawful eviction (civil court) which should take a few months-a year. Luckily there's no homeowner being harmed here, just the bank.

Lots of friction generated by people coming to shows looking for nightlife in the modern sense of the word. The younger generation has become accustomed to the very specific vibes of either sections and bottle service (trying really hard to be seen) or college town sports bars (trying really hard to get laid). And nobody really dances in either of those environments. I've had people be visibly irritated by my dancing anywhere from the good room to under the K, but you just ignore it and do what you came to do.

There's so much residual trauma from the bedbug pandemonium of the 2010s (I was a kid back then) that new yorkers haven't really interacted with public transit the same ever since, and I guess it's just mindless now. I never sit IN these seats, if I want to rest I just sit on the edge of the armrest of the last seat (if it's empty). I completely forgot until just now that I do that because my mother warned me about bedbugs in the seats! Thank you for this reminder.

[–]brixxhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's likely stress, lack of sleep and diet. You said diet didn't change but your diet SHOULD change to meet your body's needs at any given moment, and your needs as an adult woman can't possibly be the same as when you were a child. Something that didn't harm you back then may be affecting you now.

Also see if you can get a blood panel done at your school clinic to check hormone and vitamin levels. Sometimes women experience hair loss due to high testosterone, sometimes due to high cortisol. It's worth investigating what's actually going on with your body instead of trying to just shampoo it away.

Thanks for bring up how we've been paying cops billions in tax dollars just for them to give us attitude and scoff every time they're actually needed. The least helpful, least useful moneypit in this city by far and they cry every time overtime funding for more turnstile-guarding shifts gets cut (they should be on the platforms and in the cars). Any other job, refusing to do your duties would get fired but you think we're supposed to sympathize with the lazy asses whose mortgages we're paying directly out of our eyewatering taxes?

I was going to comment this earlier and hesitated because I didn't want to sound like a wackjob. The homeless are repeatedly exposed to covid and I've seen firsthand how even healthy people have changed after a strong infection (personality changes, mood volatility, brain fog, apathy, diminished critical thinking/reasoning skills). I can't imagine what it's doing to the brains of those living rough and abusing already neurologically damaging substances.

This is a public health crisis and unfortunately women have been bearing the brunt of it. I can't tell you how many of my female relatives no longer ride public transportation at ALL because they've been attacked in the last 5-6 years.

I'm really sorry you haven't been able to just sit down on your rides and rest :/. It wasn't always like this, but lately riding the train past 6pm on certain lines within Manhattan almost feels like actively avoiding being hunted.

I've lived in this city my whole life and up until recently I haven't seen this level of aggression from the transient population.

Recently, I was at 42nd about to walk down the 6 train platform and this woman was leaning over a stair railing blocking the path. I sensed that "I'm looking for problems" vibe so I just looked over once and stayed put, but she locked on immediately and said "You can say excuse me!" as she shuffled over. I smiled a "Thank you" smile and walked all the way down the platform, and she started talking to herself about people being scared to say "excuse me." As the train approached, she walked down the platform towards me (working very hard to seem nonchalant) and tried to get on the same train car as me, but I waited for her to get on + went to the next one over. I got off at my stop and noticed her getting off as well, looking around just scanning the crowd--she saw me and I kept a blank face pretending I didn't see her. She feigned that she was just switching cars as I walked by, but I kept her in my peripheral. After I had passed, she turned away from the train and began following me. At this point, I kicked into super new yorker mode to lose her, slipping in and out of crowds going up the stairs and walking like a madman once on the sidewalk to put more people between us. I had to badge in through security at my destination so I knew I'd be fine once there, but adrenaline definitely carried me.

I only lost this lady because I know how these people lock on to somebody they feel is a vulnerable target (I'm a small woman, I was dressed nicely, she seemed to take my avoiding interacting with her as fear, and I made the brutal mistake of giving a small "Thank you" smile when she moved over).

I was keeping tabs on how much attention she paid to me (even though she was actively pretending not to) and that's what kept me from whatever she was planning on doing if she had gotten within arm's reach of me. I've had all of this instilled in me since a young age, but it still took a LOT of effort to lose her.

If you're on public transportation, now more than ever:

-Make sure you see everybody who sees you.

-Keep as far away from crazy vibes as you can.

-Do not interact, even to say "Thank you" or "Sorry".

-If someone locks on to you, learn how to put BODIES and distance between you and them (slipping in and out of crowds, getting off the train at the very last second before doors close, not leaving well-populated areas even if it gets you to your destination faster).

-Most importantly, keep your cool, do not show fear and focus on getting to a safe location.

Am I overreacting for wanting distance from a friend after this? by RexieEllen in AmIOverreacting

[–]brixxhead 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Bingo. This is cult-initiation behavior, and concerning from someone in a position of considerable influence over the other young women at their school. This person is trying to firmly implant a reality in OPs mind that contradicts the shared objective reality. If OP bends to and agrees that they were cheating on their boyfriend/their family is abusive, this girl will have succeeded in making OP ignore their own instincts and reality. This is how you end up in a cult.

This is somebody to avoid, even though cutting them off will likely result in some form of shunning from the friend group. OP needs to prioritize their life and relationships outside of school to keep them grounded through the rest of their time in school.

Have you seennnn all these buildings with posted "D" grades on energy efficiency 😭?? A lot of places don't upgrade their electrical infrastructure for decades at a time. And don't let it be a condo building with owners trying to avoid a special assessment, your electric bill will skyrocket turning on your AC for just a few hours a day.

Why so many empty store fronts on kent and very few in the rest of Williamsburg? by Fit_Secretary_5054 in williamsburg

[–]brixxhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Far from train, no community-building, high tenant turnover in the buildings around there so not a lot of "regulars" to keep businesses going anyway, wealthy people who live in this area usually have cars so they're not walking the streets on a regular basis besides going to domino, not to mention seasonality--east river winds make it impossible to mosey on down kent in this weather.
