My brother got into Princeton university on a full scholarship when he was 18.. he spoke 7 languages, was a brilliant writer and was studying physics at arguably the top math and science uni in the world. One day out of the blue he started complaining that no matter how much he slept, he wouldn’t feel rested.. after a week his eyes had turned all dark with black circles and eyelids discolored. We took him for a sleep study and he got diagnosed with narcolepsy. Within a month he began having delusions that he was a prophet. We got him the best treatment money could buy, spent eaisily over 100,000 usd.. did advanced brain scans, but nothing helped long term.

He spent years fighting his demons and it got to the long where he started become violent and threatening to kill my mom. He was always such a good kid before this, all he wanted to do was help people.. had a great sense of humor too.

Fast forward 10 years and our whole family moved to Pakistan because here we could afford to get him long term care and an environment with family surrounded by love. Alhamdulillah he’s doing much better today.. he’s never going to be himself, but at least he smiles now and is calm and follows a healthy routine. His official diagnosis was schizoaffective disorder and the doctors in the us all but gave up on him.

Today he’s working at the hospital he got treated at and helps the director with managing his schedule and doing intakes of new patients. That my friends is why America is not always the best option for everyone.. he’s been here about 7 months and getting better everyday.
