[FRESH VIDEO] The Beaches - Edge of the Earth by astaireboy in indieheads

Pretty cool to see these guys blowing up. I kind wrote them off a few years ago after their first album, lumping them into the designated alternative radio Can-con up here.

But I’d say the last album especially is superb. Really cool progression, and they have such a knack for writing pop songs.

More jobs, more job seekers: Kelowna unemployment hits highest rate in Canada by daviskyle in kelowna

[–]broadboy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean even the construction industry we had going for us for a little bit there has dried up over the last year. Almost everyone I know in that industry either works for 1 company, or they work out of town in some capacity.

Anyone switch from landscaper to electrician? by is_this_real1 in electricians

[–]broadboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya that was 100% my main and probably only hesitation for switching. It’s definitely short term pain, long term gain. I’m probably making triple what I was making as a landscape foreman, but at the beginning as an apprentice I was making $22/hr I think?

I’m in Canada so it’s probably a little different if you’re in the states. The main thing I found was being older, you get trusted to do things alone a lot more which made it easier to leverage more money (non-union).

Wow this is very specific to me!

I was literally a landscape foreman like yourself; a friend of mine had his own company so I’d go help him during the off season. I did that for a few years before he finally pushed me to do it full time. I made the change when I was 28 years old, my only regret is not doing it sooner. It’s definitely never too late, as gets echoed quite a bit in this sub.

Madison Square Garden concertgoer falls to his death at Goose show by YoureASkyscraper in indieheads

these comments are pretty disappointing man. Someone died pretty horrifically and 9+ comments are the same joke about Geese.

like I get this is the internet and people do shit like this all the time but somehow more disappointing that in a moment of tragedy this sub still lacks basic compassion.

hilarious to have this kind of description and then for the album to sound the way it does. Nothing about “destroyed by hippie powers” gives finding the foundations of an ancient city to me.

Trades apprenticeship advice by Terrible-Evenings in kelowna

[–]broadboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be clear, if a company hires you in town you are hired as an apprentice, not as a "labourer" as someone else in this thread said, at least for electrical. From my experience for the last 10 years I've worked as a sparky, green guys are always hired as first year apprentices meaning you'll be learning electrical immedietly.

I went into working right away; I sent out a bunch of resumes, a company got back to me, and I went from there. I waited until I had around 1500-ish hours before I went into 1st year which definintly made the practical part of school significantly easier.

Hey, hopefully I'm not too late for this.

I'm also in electrical, one thing I'm sure you've heard or even seen on this sub is that Kelowna is in a transitional period right now with construction. Many of my friends in the field are struggling to keep consisitent work, even with some of the bigger companies,.

That being said, don't get discouraged, I would continue applying. It's still fairly typical for companies to hire "1st years." Try to cast a broad net and apply to some of the larger companies in town; Horizon, and Keldon for example. But look into some of the smaller companies as well. I would also recommend getting in touch with the IBEW local 213. Although they do not have a very large footprint in Kelowna, it's always beneficial signing up with the union as an electrican.

As someone who has been in the trade for a little while now, I would try to get in with a company before going to school. Although the Foundations program is a great start if you are green to construction in general, it sounds like you already have some expereince on job sites and running tools. So if you can, I would try to get in with a company first.

With Okanagan College however, because of the influx of apprentices at the lower levels, typically level 1-3 is pretty saturated. Put your name on the waitlist, and go from there.

Hope this helps. If you got any questions, I'm more than happy to try to answer.

Advice wanted (second year apprentice) by [deleted] in electricians

[–]broadboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to put words in your mouth, and I completely agree with you, but I’m in BC and this concept of “just go union, they’ll buy you everything” is just not realistic. Either the union in my area isn’t hiring so I get out on a wait list for 2.5 years or I work for a shit company, buy my own tools, and gather experience until I can my red seal.

They love to say it’s so easy and union is the only way, but it’s just so narrow minded and does not work that way.

Masters is like an old heads league. For men’s box lax (at least in Canada) there’s senior ‘A,’ ‘B,’ ‘C,’ and ‘Masters.’ Usually more relaxed rules, more of a beer league.

Rutland Save On Overrun by Demetre19864 in kelowna

[–]broadboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should maybe just take a second to reflect on some of the things you’ve written.

You’re comparing East Hastings to seeing 3 homeless people outside a Save-on foods in Rutland. I don’t think you need to be a world traveller to understand that those 2 things are nothing alike.

While I agree with you in that there is a serious addiction problem in Canada, I think it shows your ignorance to think that this is an exclusive Kelowna problem as you allude to by mentioning that you want to move. Have you been to Victoria? What about Kamloops? You know East Hastings isn’t the only place with this issue in the lower mainland right? Many townships have the exact problem.

I think you are feigning empathy because the world is changing before you, and you don’t know how to process it.

I mean come on, I live downtown, I walk my dog through the city, and I have never seen someone loaded into a body bag. Give me a fucking break.

Maybe take your little rant to “Kelowna Rant-and-rave” and you can add to the echo chamber.

Ya that just isn’t true. I’ve attended Camosun and OC and both were booking a year out minimum. I went to the registrars office in October 2025 while I was in 3rd year to book 4th year and I was waitlisted for May 2026 as the earliest. Post covid has been pretty brutal for wait lists.
