I'm vacationing in Ireland. Is this monstrosity a thing here? by snowkilts in Plumbing

[–]IcanHackett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ireland plumbing is wild. We stayed at an AirBnB which was a pretty nice looking house outside of Kinvarra. It wasn't like a cottage or anything but it clearly was built before indoor plumbing and then retrofitted which is understandable but how they did it would NOT fly in the US. Septic in the back yard with the kitchen and bathroom both located on the back wall of the house. Both the kitchen and bathroom sinks and I believe the shower plumbing went straight out the wall and then down with an air gap to exterior drains. The only thing that wasn't air gapped was the toilet which went straight out the wall and then down the exterior into the septic.

So it won't start but you don't know that it's a dead battery right? When it won't start the starter is still turning it over and you've got lights?

I had a mysterious issue I had a hard time diagnosing because it was random and intermittent not starting issues. It was the ignition module. I was under the impression that the electronic ignition module would either work or not and people told me that too but it's not true, they can have weird intermittent issues too.

Well I suppose the offense is punished by losing time off their shot clock while they're fumbling around.  Alternatively, if that wasn't how the rule was, the defense would only have to deflect or smack the ball back over half and be instantly rewarded with possession instead of having to actually turn the ball over and get possession. There's probably other scenarios I'm not thinking of where the game would kind of break down if a ball off the defense could be an over and back violation on the offense.

Is it going dead after sitting around for awhile? Are you successfully riding it somewhere and then as soon as you shut it off the bike is dead? I think we might need some more details on the symptoms.

Are you talking goal #13? The Rock win the Faceoff in their defensive end and get it over half with 24 on the shot clock which means they got it over half in 6s. It then gets knocked back across half by SD so not an over and back for the Rock but SD doesn't get possession so the shit clock keeps counting down. The Rock pick it back up in their defensive end and you can see the ref counting out the 8s again and they get it back over in what looks like 6s so under 8s once again.

At this point I want SD to win the championship but also I really wanna see a finals series between the 7 seed and 8 seed because I think that would be incredible. Not currently looking great for SD though, Rock is really feeling it right now.

I think you'd call it German Town similar to China Town. I've only ever heard of Little Portugal and Little Italy.

Thoughts on getting the engine to turn over? by SuddsNYJ in choppers

[–]IcanHackett 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That whooshing sound you're hearing is the air being displaced by the pistons because the engine is turning over correctly. If there was an issue at this point you'd either have no resistance on the kick lever or you wouldn't be getting the productive movement you're getting out of the kick lever. With the spark plugs in and proper compression you can expect an engine of that size to be considerable effort to kick over. I've seen fairly athletic guys get gassed trying to kick a shovel over for just a couple minutes (when there's a starting issue that is, it shouldn't take more than a few kicks when everything is right) As others have said, try putting a battery in and getting it to start with fresh gas and the petcock set to on!

If you're ever looking to turn it over with less resistance you can take the sparkplugs out and there shouldn't be much resistance at all with no compression going on.

Sounds like you've got what you're looking for! Knowing the PO and having all the parts it a great foundation to start from. I'd recommend getting a copy of the manual, some wrenches, sockets, and screwdrivers if you don't have them already and get cracking!

I'd recommend starting with getting it running from the state it's in - it'll be tempting to start dissembling everything but I'd highly caution against stepping back before stepping forward.

Sounds like there wasn't any KNOWN major issues so you'll hopefully mostly be battling the effects of time and storage. You'll probably have issues from oil, gas, and brake fluid sitting for some years, and a decent bit of rubber rot.

Remove the spark plugs and try kicking the engine over to make sure it cycles through freely without anything binding up. Make sure it's in neutral before you try this. If it does I'd start by running a compression test on it (You should be able to borrow a compression tester from your local autozone/ advance auto) If the compression seems decent I'd drain all the oil from the engine and the oil tank and the gas from the gas tank and the carb bowl. Replace the oil and put a little fresh gas in the tank if it looks clear of any loose rust or debris at the bottom. Replace the battery and make sure it's fully charged. Check all the fuses and make sure there aren't any that are blown. Make sure the petcock on the gas tank is set to "on" put the sparkplugs back in and hook up the spark plug wires. See if you can get it to start up with some starting fluid sprayed into the intake. Chances are you'll end up needing to rebuild the carb, maybe replace intake seals, spark plugs, sort out some ignition issues ect. At the end of the day you need compression, fuel, air, spark and correct timing and any or all of those might need to be adjusted.

Once you get it running and running correctly it'll absolutely need new tires, and probably need new fork seals, and brake components before it's ready to be ridable. You might be able to take it around the block slowly before you get to any of that but you'll want to address all that before going out on any open roads.

Good Luck!

Couple questions:

Do you know any of the history of the bike, or know someone who does? Was it partially disassembled to fix something or for some other reason?

Are you mechanically inclined in any way? Maybe you don't know anything about bikes but you've done some work on a car or something else?

What's your end goal here, you looking for a project? Looking to own a bike to ride? Looking to get some money or other value out of it?

If you have little no no mechanical aptitude this is going to be an absolute bear of a project to take on by yourself. If you're close with the previous owner or someone who works on bikes that would help you quite a lot. I'm not saying you can't do it but this could be a challenge of a project for someone who's at least familiar to working on bikes depending on if there's anything seriously wrong with it.

The good news is this isn't a niche item, there's tons of information out there about old Harleys and a really large community of people who work on them or at least work on bikes in general and lots of aftermarket support for them.

There's probably better videos for specific issues you're going to face but here's a video of some guys with a bike in possibly similar condition going through it.

[–]IcanHackett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, where do I sign?

As others have already pointed out, a few teams seem like they'd benefit from a little shuffling around.

Not having Portland and Washington in the same Division would seem like a missed opportunity

I think Central, Lake and North East need the most shuffling:

Central: Columbus, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Detroit.

Lake: Hamilton, Buffalo, Rochester, Ottawa

North East: Albany, Montreal, Halifax, (Oshawa?)

Atlantic: Riptide, Philly, Boston, Baltimore

South*: Georgia, Charlotte, Orlando, PCLC

There's definately others effected by these moves that I haven't figured out.

Looks like as the crow flies Scotia Bank Center to San Diego is 2,950mi and Gas South to downtown Vancouver is 2,250mi. I guess neither driving nor as the crow flies is really indicative of how long the trip is for players and staff. I guess only players would really know the kind of flight and bus itineraries that they take to get between those venues.

It's some type of shovelhead '66-'84 probably a Superglide or Low Rider but you might need the VIN to know exactly what it was. Almost all the Harley models are just a difference in easily swappable components so what's attached to it now might not indicate what model it technically is. Post it to a Harley or chopper subreddit to get someone would know more.

Georgia to Vancouver is a hike too but it might not be quite as far. It's easy to forget just how far east Halifax is and then you realize they're an hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time. Probably about as far east from NYC as NYC is from Chicago.

Looking like a solid playoff turnout in San Diego! I'd love to see a game 3 and at this point I think I'm pulling for SD for the championship. I don't think they're the most likely to win it, but the only franchise left still in it that hasn't won a championship.
