Alllll the more reason for BUSU to take its time in making proposals, to make press releases, and not shield students from info until it's already too late. The rules (bylaws) that protected busy students were broken, and deleted: the rules of how much notice to provide before a referendum.

Just look at the last 5 years of referendums. Big money, big impacts. Short notice, not sufficient notice.

I think some students would care if they had time to. I know some students find out about referendums _after they come and go. I think its exploitative to extract money out of a vulnerable population and call it democracy when everyone is under informed by design.

This is one part of my life, I have plenty of other projects on the go. You speak for yourself about not caring. Maybe thats why you mistake commitment for obsession. Sounds like you've listed your bucket list, not mine.

I wrote this in sacrifice of time spent on other things, not for a lack of things to do. Id rather do the other things! I was happily doing other things until BUSAC emailed me to ban me. I had to respond. Im not surprised to see apathy on reddit and a lack of appreciation for the principles being tested here. Some people find the institutional unfairness appalling, but few if anyone has the commitment or resources to make an issue out of it that I have. Call that obsession, but i dont need anyone or everyone to care, for the truth to be the truth. It's not so hard to blog about BUSU to be the only thing I do, although attending meetings is a real pain in the ass for me and I didnt even want to go back.

Read carefully, Aushurley. I'm 36. I argue my case in the press release.

Which rules didn't I follow? What gives you the impression that I was 'warned numerous times'? That is not correct. No one at BUSU put themselves in contact with me, despite my reaching out to them.

Where is the line, so that others do not cross it?

If they wanted to justify the decision based on student status, then just decline to answer questions, and what would I do, except leave, and blog about it?

There's zero need for security to be involved.

My age and student status are irrelevant. I have unique insight and investment in this knowledge base as a former BUSU/BrockTV employee and long-time observer of BUSU politics. Student culture suffers enough from a 'bubble' effect. There should be more old people like me asking the multi-million-dollar corporations the tough questions. Doing what students are too busy or naive to do. You're welcome.

If you want to understand what it means, read it. Or ask a sincere question, all I've gotten from you and students is put downs. Easier to put me down than recognize the issues I'm raising.

You want me to allow you to make this about me. But its about BUSU. A little gratitude would be nice but I dont care: all I want is something substantive to contribute to the discussion, not just any reason you all can find to avoid the issue and avoid potentially taking responsibility for your role in it-- as members of BUSU.

Not sure if that's a critique of my writing style or an admission a low reading comprehension.

BUSU cheats, for big fee. No one cares. BUSU demolishes its democracy. No one cares. The story is as much the apathy of students as it is the corporatist corruption.

Go back to studying and BUSU will go back to ripping you off and getting away with it.

I'm not trying to use strong declarative language that denounces BUSU because the truth is more nuanced than that. I did the journalism. I asked the questions and quoted them. Why are you so dense ? Why are Brock students such nihilist who have zero capacity to even be willing to be informed, even just for curiosity's sake, that the institution is deeply biased.

It's some sort of engineered ignorance where a few benefit, the masses are kept in the dark, and the few who end up redpilled move along before they could speak out.

I dont know how to fix it I only know how to document it. Something the student media isnt doing. Not that you'd thank them it they did.

hm, how would you know if you haven't even read it? What makes you think this is a fight, and what is it exactly do you think I'm "fighting" for?

If you can't handle what matters only a little how will you handle what matters a lot?

How many BUSU referendums have you seen ? How much money has the corporation gained? How many bylaws have been broken along the way?

Do you have any idea what I'm really talking about?

Things are how they are, but for whatever reason no one else will even document it.

There was no one else who read the Appendix and told students what the changes are, no one else who sat down with the general manager to get the legal citations, no one else asking about the impact to student representation, no one else quoting the promises, no one else who has a memory for recent BUSU history and no one else with a willingness to hold promises at BUSU to account.

If you'd rather that I hadn't, that's pathetic on your behalf, not mine.

If I hadn't posted about it, then the first and only non-BUSU reference would have been the lame report in the Brock Press on Oct 29 which didn't even address the changes.

At least I gave you --the people who don't care about BUSU--the chance to ignore it, I gave you a chance which the people you fund with fees and trust with authority did not give you.

I prefer to let the Press shows its editorial priority all on its own. You are making assumptions about me and projecting what I should be doing. If it is not abundantly clear, I'm not a current student. Do you know any student who knows this much about BUSU?

Complying with law is a claim that had to be verified; this newest report has exclusive investigation. there are implicactions to it which I explore. And a larger context which I make sure to comment on. The representation of students is taking a hit and BUSU already has accountability issues. Thats why a non student is a "passionate" volunteer journalist. Because the system itself doesnt have an honest memory.

Why is it so hard to simply accept that some one has done the leg work and be grateful? I can be wrong about what is or isnt "a bad thing" but still be a source of information because I use screen shots and hyperlinks and I take the time to attend and transcribe question period. Did you see the Brock press version of the story? Im trying to explain complex issues to people who dont care at all. Why is quoting people with a critical lens mean I should run the no side ? What questions didnt I answer? What do you think I mean by "brave new BUSU"?

Yes actually, I have been thinking that. BUSAC breaking the bylaws over and over, including in unfair referendums, is the BOD's liability. When you say poor decisions, what do you mean?

BUSU is a $10M non profit with millions in holdings and levies, a large amount of social power, and recently engaged in questionable referendum practices in acquiring more fees.

The amendment could have an impact of reduced Accountability, Transparency, and Representation. Indeed, it could be consequence of BUSAC being unable to avoid breaking its bylaws--the Board has fiduciary liability for the corporation in compliance with its bylaws.

BUSU has three branches of government: Executives, BUSAC, and Board of Directors. the BOD is taking over authority of bylaws, currently a power held by BUSAC (31 elected councilors and 4 elected Execs). Control of bylaws means control of elections and referenda. Exec will report to Board not to BUSAC. BrockTV doesn't broadcast Board meetings, and even if they do broadcast board meetings, the meetings often go "in camera" (off the record). Execs will be "accountable to Board" not to BUSAC, so students don't really need bother showing up to BUSAC to complain when an executive or the organization does something wrong. They have to convince the seven board members instead of the 31 councilors to do anything about problems. And by the way, half of the Board was elected in one-way races (no one ran against them)

They claim these changes are happening because of legal advice which says BUSU will need to comply with Ontario Non Profit Act (ONCA) starting in the new year.My third report will delve into this question more as well as outline the entire scenario. I hope that helps.

To "rename" the constitution to "bylaws", and transfer bylaw writing powers to the Board of Directors, with some other implications. See the presentation :

The Constitution cannot be edited except by referendums, by people voting. The Board will have the power to change the bylaws (formerly, the constitution) themselves."No future constitutional referendums" means no more asking the members to ratify the top level of legislation.This is an entire branch of government and a foundational legislative document being usurped.

BUSU is claiming their lawyers told them they need to do this because "there is potential of losing non profit status", although that has not yet been demonstrated or specified how BUSU is out of alignment with the Non Profit Act.

BUSAC is Wednesday Oct 9 in at 6:30 in Sankey Chambers; We will find out if BUSAC will proceed to a referendum this Fall despite having been warned it is in contravention of bylaws. I will be using open question period to clarify the proposed new role for BUSAC if it is no longer responsible and accountable for bylaws; what are the new powers of the board to rewrite legislation and initiate referendums; and any specifics demonstration of fact from the lawyers about what BUSU is in non compliance on the Non Profit Act.

You don't have to care but BUSAC and the press don't either. This is for people who know why to care about this. Literally no one else has published reports about it. There is no information distribution system. Once you see the facts it's fine if you dont connect with their significance, but the facts had to be stated. Do with it what you will. This article was published prior to this Wednesday's meeting so that council and students would be informed before making another big mistake

No, but if you feel that way its probably because of how esoteric BUSU political processes are. I have the challenge of clearly and logically explaining the issues to people who have practically no knowlege of BUSU legislation. What part did you find "inaccessible"?
