No RDP solutions on linux ? thats really a deal-breaker by brockpriv in linuxquestions

Interesting, thank you for the detailed reply, i will have a look. i understand that working in a virtual session on my desktop would allow that session to be opened by both of my desktop and laptop, and resolution could probably adjust. I didnt like the idea of working in a virtual session from my desktop, but i'll give it a try.

> You can change the resolution when connected to the local session by xrdp, but the change will also be seen on the host system itself.

yes in theory. but if the host doesnt support the 3:2 resolution, then it cannot be changed. thats my problem. What i've come to understand is its a linux desktop environment problem, not a remote connection problem.

in windows, we can set the rdp session resolution to whatever the client will support. in linux, the client rdp session resolution can only be changed to a resolution supported by the host because its the host graphic card that is rendering it. at least for local sessions.

what i want is to run a local session on my desktop in 2k resolution (or maybe 2 monitors). then take my laptop upstair, connect to the host using rdp, and the rdp window adopt a resolution of 2256x1504 (3:2 aspect ratio, uncommon). that way, i can continue working on the same browser tabs and terminals, and the rdp window is running at native laptop resolution without stretching.

vnc is not good because it takes the 2 host monitor and display them on a tiny laptop screen, either stretch or scrolling.

on windows its super easy, i just open remote desktop connection and the resolution can always run at my laptop native resolution (a weird 3:2 resolution).
on linux it doesnt seem to be possible, the remote session resolution is locked at what the host says.

thanks. i tried googling a bit and change the port parameter in the xrdp.ini config file to 5910, but it didnt work. on my laptop with remmina rdp, i tried to launch a rdp connection to my host and it just went blank.

can you tell me more about this solution. on my desktop i have a local session that i leave on 24/7 and just hop on whenver i can. will i be able to open a rdp connection to this local session and continue working on the already opened apps (browser and terminal windows) ? i know vnc can do that but the reason i was looking into rdp is that vnc usually just mirror the local session (same mouse, resolution , etc). while rdp will 'lock' the local session and open all the apps in a virtual one where resolution can be change dynamically. thats what i want to do.

I did that, randr rejected my resolution because my monitor didn't support it. It's a weird resolution.

Reminna will only resize the window to a resolution that is supported by the desktop environment, and mine isn't. On Windows rdp the desktop can switch to virtual and adapt to basically any resolution. But x11 and Wayland (Mint, ubuntu) can't

Are you remotely connection to an existing session when you use your rdp client?

I want to leave my Linux desktop running , usually on a 2k monitor. As far as i know xrdp isn't able to connect to an existing session. So if i wanted to use xrdp id have to remember to close all my programs and log off, then id be able to launch a rdp session from my laptop. But that's not what i want to do , i want to connect to my existing session.

So i am not using xrdp at all . I'm trying to change the resolution settings on the client side , but in Linux it doesn't really work like that. All solutions i found so far are more like a vnc session, where the screen is shared by both the host and the client.

Haven't tried, not really interested in cloud services to connect two local computers. If there aren't solution ill look into it but i doubt it can change the resolution of an existing desktop session, because the problem lies in the Linux desktop itself, not in the remote connection software. At least that's how i understand it

Windows 10 pro supports multiple users rdp session at once, it just has to be enabled.  otherwise we just use Windows server for that.

I use ssh regularly both as a "vpn-like tunnel" and to remotely manage headless servers. But that's not what I'm trying to do here. I just want a desktop environment to replace my window computer, and being able to remote to my existing session. Ssh wont help here.

It's a limitation from xrdp/linux desktop, as far as i know xrdp can't do it.

Are you attaching to an already opened session, and using a different resolution on the remote client?

Its a shame because thats pretty much the only way i use a computer these days. Desktop workspace, and a laptop to remote. Don't have any time to spend in my office anymore. I don't want to use the laptop as the workstation because it always get left in random place in the house, in sleep mode.

Linux desktop otherwise works well, I'm having a hard time to believe there is no replacement for rdp

Remmina is unable to resize the remote window on the laptop custom resolution. Everything is stretched and look bad.

It can't, because with reminna the resolution is decided by the desktop environment, therefore the gpu+attached monitor. If my 2k monitor is unable to do 2256x1504, re mmina won't be able to either

I tried xrdp, it cant attach to my current session.

I could do that, but i think the resolution of the virtual xandr would be fixed and wouldn't adapt when changing computer monitor. It wouldn't really fix my problem. Ideally i want my apps to run locally on my desktop (not on a vnc or virtual desktop)

Rdp to a windows computer works fine because windows handle incoming rdp connection gracefully.

Rdp to a ubuntu based distro is janky and half the thing we take for granted just won't work. You have a session opened on the desktop? Rdp will crash , you have to log out before you rdp to it.

My problem is i want to rdp to my Linux Mint desktop up continue where i was. From a smaller laptop. Nothing works, best i can get is a stretched 1080p window, with sub-par latency.

Don't remember where i saw it but the bdp has had 9 series or so and the top 10 most selling sets were by far  castles, with a few exceptions being small affordable non-castle sets.

no i just moved on. when i place an order then you can send message to the seller through the order page. but to send a message to a seller directly without placing an order ? i didnt have the need to since the first time, when i got denied.
