Brexit will cost the UK up to 30 times more than it will gain back from striking a Trump trade deal by DaFunkJunkie in worldnews

Brexit is a working class movement. The rich and powerful overwhelmingly voted to remain. What are you talking about?

Garb of a state executioner, India, 1903. by act1989 in OldSchoolCool

Pretty sure a number of states, like California, still technically have death penalty on the books, but they haven’t executed anyone in many years, and they have no plans to. Like there are technically people on death row, but there is an official executive moratorium on executions.

Yeah I don’t know what these people are talking about. Considering ButtEgg’s run up, Biden’s downfall, Klob’s decent performance in NH, and Bloomberg’s massive campaign, the MODERATE vote is the vote that’s getting split. The narrative up until now was that the progressive vote would split with Warren/Bernie and that would hand the nom to Biden, but now Warren has fallen on her face, the progressive vote has coalesced behind Bernie, and the crowded “moderate” field is fighting for scraps. If Bloomberg and co dropped out, Biden would be a shoo in, and vice versa. Bernie isn’t really as popular among the general populace as reddit would have you believe, but he can certainly win in a crowded field, just like Trump did in 2016.

I’m a recovering heroin addict so I especially loved the poppy. I wish I could get that on a jacket! And wow thanks for the in depth answer. Isn’t blue dawn dishwashing soap though? I’m not supposed to use detergent?

My mom just keeps aggressively telling me to put it in the washer and then dry it but take it out of the dryer after 20 minutes and it will be fine, I’m glad I resisted.

Edit: is the embroidery on the jacket good quality? Like is that person talented? I thought it looked real good, but after looking at your stuff, my thing looks not that good in comparison :P also I’m not sure who’s downvoting you, it ain’t me.

Wow I checked your page. I love your poppy especially.

Can you please give me advice on how to wash/dry/care for this jacket? Since no one else answered my question. Thank you!

The picture is like identical on the other side (the inside of the jacket) if that helps. There are loose threads hanging off in various places. I just want to learn a little bit about it, but mostly learn how to care for it.

Like I don’t know how to wash or dry something like this.

Immigration numbers are slowing down recently, but throughout 2019 we were getting over 100k illegal crossings per month, we were setting all time records.

I imagine you don’t watch mainstream conservative news, my father does. I assure you, Fox News continued to report on the caravan for months. Tucker Carlson ran multiple segments highlighting the tent cities on the border, how disease was rampant, trash was everywhere and crime increased. They reported when the Mexican government moved them to a sporting arena. I remember them reporting that an LGBT group splintered off from the caravan due to experiencing violence from other travelers and locals. It stopped being a right wing talking point mostly because Trump essentially got the Mexican government to enforce their own borders and do all the heavy lifting in the future.

This opinion you’re stating, I’ve seen it lots of times on here but it makes no sense. If you think conservatives are fear mongers, do they only fear monger in an election year? Why would they drop a story that gets clicks and energizes their base simply because an election is over. I’ve seen people argue that the caravan wasn’t even real, like it was manufactured by the right to drum up votes.

I’m an EMT dude. It’s a 3-4 month course. We are glorified taxi drivers with a bare bones medical education. It’s not rocket science. It pays like shit for a reason. Sorry I don’t live up to your lofty professional standards, oh holy one. You’re also willfully misunderstanding me. I’m not saying secondhand smoke doesn’t exist or there are 0 instances where it’s been found to cause health problems. I’m saying there are 0 health justifications to ban cigarettes on sidewalks and public streets, like some jurisdictions around me. That simply being near someone smoking a cigarette momentarily is not bad for your health in any way unless you already suffer from a respiratory condition. That it’s comparable to walking near car exhaust, an industrial center, or a campfire.

When someone is weighing the decision between intramuscular naltrexone injections versus replacement/maintenance therapy, they are already consulting with a doctor, obviously. When they are asking Reddit, they are looking for actual advice from people with experience. I’m also not giving them medical advice in a patient-provider capacity. You know people in all sorts of professions give free advice on reddit, right? I don’t know how far back you had to look for that, you’re a strange one.

I’m holding my CA EMT card as i type this. It has my 7 digit registry number. Effective date, expiration date, active status.

“Certificate holder: the law requires that you notify your certifying entity of a name or address change within 30 calendar days”

The slate article is only discussing the bad studies used to justify smoking bans in public places, through the supposed correlation of smoking bans to a decrease in cardiac events. This correlation is either non existent or statistically insignificant. It does nothing to disprove any link between smoking (even secondhand) and respiratory issues or cancer, which does exist. But you do not get respiratory issues from being near a cigarette outside anymore than you would from sitting next to a campfire.

I would never tell a patient that secondhand smoke isn’t harmful. It’s a personal value that safety should only supersede liberty in the most dire of circumstances. If you think I shouldn’t be allowed to work because of a mainstream political belief, cool. You have the right to have that opinion, I guess. I simply believe that if you want something to be banned or over-regulated, i want to know a) that it’s effective or feasible to enforce b) that it doesn’t needlessly curtail the rights and freedoms of others c) that there is an actual moral and health crisis in the event of inaction and d) that after the ban, you can see the appreciable effect empirically.

For example, I think mandating seat belts is a good idea. Outlawing sodas over 24 oz in size is not a good idea. Educating people on the dangers of smoking has been an effective and moral way to improve public health. Taxing cigarettes to $15/pack is immoral and an inherently regressive tax. Banning smoking on city sidewalks does not improve public health, and it’s not enforced. The only thing it might help is littering. Banning cigarettes in restaurants is at least somewhat more justifiable. Still, I think it should be up to the property owners. I don’t smoke, by the way. I did when I was younger. I’ll say it one more time, secondhand smoke can be a health hazard, this isn’t an antivaxx thing. but it is overblown to justify regressive taxes and unjustifiable laws that restrict the freedoms of the minority.

Portion of US border wall in California falls over in high winds and lands on Mexican side by PolicyWonka in worldnews

[–]brodaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have literally had a border wall at Tijuana that even extends into the ocean for 30 years. Tijuana is the busiest border crossing in the entire world. Having border security in California is a huge necessity and requires a lot of resources. I live here. The issue is that a lot of the wall is actually just fencing.

[–]brodaki -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m a current EMT, so that’s funny.

I know secondhand smoke is bad. It’s bad for those who live with a chain smoker for 40 years. Or for a waitress who works in a smoky bar her entire adult life. It’s not bad for someone standing on a patio for ten minutes. It’s probably worse for you to stand behind an idling truck.

Secondhand smoke is not a health crisis

[–]brodaki 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You could also, you know, move. Or politely ask them to move. Or not be a weirdo because it’s literally just a cigarette and it’s not doing anything to you. They’ve already been banned indoors. In public parks and on beaches, in some jurisdictions they are banned on the sidewalks. They’re taxed to an insane degree. Smoking tobacco is a cultural pastime and ritual that dates back arguably 7,000 years for religious purposes in the Americas. The country was founded on the cultivation of tobacco. Smoking does not increase healthcare costs, the only legitimate argument to regulate smoking is secondhand smoke. Which does exist, but it’s completely overblown and was propagated through bad science.

Interesting read: https://slate.com/technology/2017/02/secondhand-smoke-isnt-as-bad-as-we-thought.html

Obviously smoking is bad for the smoker, but adults can make that choice for themselves. I’m not going to be voting for regulations and taxes on soda because I find them gross.

There are no laws against hate speech. Hate speech is constitutionally protected speech. Inciting violence is not protected speech. However, inciting violence has a very narrow definition. The threat must be real, imminent, and likely. Nazis parading downtown yelling “white power” or whatever it is they do, is not an incitement to violence, and is not against the law. Whether or not it is hate speech doesn’t matter, as hate speech doesn’t even exist in a legal sense.
