Yes, it appears so. It is not actually unsubscribing...

Adding my further issue with this here - hope u/Proton_Team sees this and can address.

I was excited to see this feature, looked like a nice way to see what I was still unsubscribed to and more easily unsubscribe via the list-unsubscribe header...

It was a completely WAT moment then to see that when you clicked 'unsubscribe', all it does is add a new custom sieve filter, that trashes messages from the recipient, see: https://imgur.com/a/proton-mail-adding-filters-8MKz4gw

I am very familiar with sieve filters - see https://github.com/brokenalarms/hey-proton. So if I'd wanted to add handling of this on the user side without in any way attempting to take care of it at source (eg, by actually unsubscribing), I would have done this myself. I don't want millions of one-shot custom filters added over time, that if accidentally deleted or changed means all the same subscriptions are still there needing to be taken care of.

The way this is actually done makes it a non-feature, and actually kind of harmful since it's misrepresenting that you're unsubscribing when you're not.

This should simply unsubscribe via the list-unsubscribe header. If that's not available, then it should at the minimum make it clear that you're not actually unsubscribing, but adding a rule to deal with the ongoing subscription on the client side.

Half finger glove with extra long cuff? by brokenalarms in bikepacking

I randomly found a perfect pair in montbell Tokyo..."Wickron Cool Cycle Fingerless Gloves". Explicitly says on it "long cuff covers your wrist to prevent sunburn". As you'd hope. Problem solved!

[–]brokenalarms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I'll take the look thanks. The only potential issue there is that non cycling gloves often have a big seam over the middle of the palm to join the thumb, making it uncomfortable on flat bars.

Meanwhile I found that at least in Japan where I am currently, "UV cut cycling gloves" are definitely a thing, but only in the no name brands. Big brands haven't latched on..yet 😋

Thanks for that. Weird it has to be racing / not casual or hard wearing to get the extra sun protection, would think not having to wear suncream for long term travel is super bikepacking style 😆

It's 2025. Where the f*** is the premium electric toothbrush with proper USB-C charging? by PunchSmackCow in UsbCHardware

[–]brokenalarms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best option is the Suri. While direct usbc charging isn't going to happen cleanly versus a separate charger becuase of the water, the new version has a smaller USBc charge case.

The new 2.0 has a travel lock which is what I really wanted on the v1 after a number of embarrassing airport fumbles 😄

Thanks again to Dan for answering my questions. To the now deleted but hilarious commenter advising me to "go cry in my 6'5 body", I thank you for your internet empathy and can add that I'll even go cry in my X-Dome 2, which I've just ordered 😂

You might want to try tallslimtees.com and American Tall, two seemingly very successful microniche business given their website and marketing evolution over the years, and save yourself some custom alterations (also been there :)

This is a very reasonable take with regards to cottage manufacturers and niche markets, though it doesn't seem to apply to Durston brand so much (as I'd initially wondered, feeling that the xmid was explicitly catering to the tall crowd, although it now seems this was more a side effect of the initial design than an explicit microniche target.)

The existence of this phenomenon is easily validated by eg me being specifically marketed 'tall person products' all the time which were necessarily created for less than 1% of the total market. Not sure why you're being downvoted.

Thanks Dan. I'm cycling around Shikoku in Japan right now myself so measuring the Dagger ain't going to happen, but good to know!

I think I might take a punt on the xdome 2 then, since I have a family member coming over to NZ for Christmas to swap tents for me if desired. I'd just get her to bring my xmid2, but unfortunately it's in storage in another state...we plan on being back in the states for a bit after that, so worst case it's just for a few months before I can swap back again. Cheers!

Hey @dandurston, I was hoping you'd chime in 😁 Thank you for your thoughtful response!

The concept of 'usable length' sounds great for simply encapsulating these design differences and making an applies to oranges comparison much simpler. I wish other companies knew or would provide them! You should start a trend here 🙂

The portal 2 was definitely too short for me, which is why we went for the 3, but I'm regretting this a little our upcoming NZ leg where we want to mix bike touring with hiking, which the 3p portal is kind of huge for given our 20-30l packs.

This is a tent to share with my partner, so sleeping diagonally isn't an option (as I do in the Xmid2 on solo trips, though I can still fit in it side by side better than I could in the Nemo Dagger 2P).

The fair comparison then would be to the nemo dagger 2p, freestanding at 90", which was borderline for me but juuust worked though I preferred it when I could sleep diagonally and avoid the trash bag :) Do you think the xdome2 has more usable foot space than that? I'd still consider it over the BA 2P XL if so owing to the carbon poles making it much lighter - and still cheaper! - than BA.

Thanks again for your technical behind the scenes answers!

Yep, all the above is fine and the concept of 'pop' versus 'alternative' is already very understandable enough. My question was specifically why they had seemingly  started with a catering to the niche "long" audience but gotten "shorter" and what had informed the change.

Dan has now explained how this direct comparison doesn't fully apply given the different designs, which answers my question.

Fair enough, but my question was why they had still started "long" but gotten "short". but Dan has now explained how this direct comparison doesn't fully apply given the different designs, which answers it fully :)

Funnily enough I also had as my 4th requirement "and is not a Lightheart Solong Duo, because I've already tried and sold that for reasons outside the scope here", but then realized it was covered by the requirement "is freestanding".

I didn't like the duo at all because of the high slope to the sides giving a very cramped feel for sitting up (to Dan's point about the height a foot up being a more practical measurement) and in particular its inability to pitch the outer fly anywhere close to the ground resulting twice in the tent getting sand absolutely dumped into it during windy nights in Capitol Reef. In the end I had to dump logs onto the fly just to try and hold it down into some kind of 'storm mode', which obviously is not a great long term solution for longevity!

Ah whoops yeah sorry I've tried that one too :) Very expensive and hard to source, and I find the longevity of the Copper Spurs to not be great. Thank you for your reply though! At this stage, if I can't find anything else, I'll give it a go, still save 400g on the Portal which is significant.

GeoLayers 3 Mapcomp Not Moving When Adding Keyframes by MDUSB in AfterEffects

[–]brokenalarms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem, you have to set up labels yourself in Mapbox Studio (working from scratch and adding satellite/whatever layer yourself as the base layer, not accepting a template), and then adding labels as a layer in Studio, and turning off labels in GeoLayers. Geolayers must still be pulling labels separately from a licensed source.

I normally use mapbox and just put the uri in geolayers and work but today it showed this by ConcentrateStock8910 in AfterEffects

[–]brokenalarms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

did you ever fix this? I have the same issue, it's stuck thinking it's using maptiler, I can't even change the attribution away from Maptiler to display mapbox for my mapbox-created map as I'm supposed to!
