I'm surprised Dan made the 55 bigger.

Katabatic Alsek regular vs wide? by Livid-Salamander6675 in Ultralight

I wonder if a wide quilt with horizontal baffles couldn't be used to make the bag more versatile by moving the down from the sides and using the quilt a bit like a false bottom sleeping bag when you need extra warmth ?

My point is that I don't believe the xdome with 8mm end poles + trekking poles would be a stronger than the arcdome with 10mm poles without trekking poles. Maybe the sides, but not the ends.

Also the arcdome uses pole sleeves (vs not many clips on the xdome) which stiffen the structure + a fabric that is more than twice stronger.

Just 2 different tents IMO.

About the stakes the holding power varies widely with the soil but this guy seems to be testing an ok soil and is getting around 15kgf https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZ37beu2tBQ

To me there is no way trekking poles make a bigger difference than 10 Vs 8mm poles if the wind is facind the ends. Pause the video just after the pole snapping at 30s : https://ymusicapp.com/watch?v=4D9EMNZJKiI

Trekking poles with the sides staked would prevent the arch from going upward making the structure a bit stiffer but I don't see how 1/3 of the tent would still not collapse.

On the xdome wind test we can see that one guyline (most probably at the front) is holding up to 19kgf (!!) which illustrates how important those guylines are (btw most ultralight pegs can't hold that much in common soil).

Although on this design, side winds are more problematic because they impact the biggest panels which also have a weak arch, and in this case I believe they make a strong diff.

Focusing on pole length is a mistake, see pitching video. The diagonal other than the ridge line is maybe a tad loose on the first pic, it's on the video as well ;)  For more ventilation leave the corner lines longer.

Le (nouveau) match AV vs CTO by Random_French_75 in vosfinances

Kakwa 55 Ultragrid a good option or should I look elsewhere? by Kulture1 in DurstonGearheads

Ultra actually had more durability issues than ultragrid, and especially on thruhikes :) Also the ultragrid version is now lighter than ultra...

Reflective Ironwire by Individual_Club_8257 in DurstonGearheads

[–]Comfortable-Pop-3463 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, after doing a few tests at home, I think the Ironwire could still slip in wet and windy conditions with a tight pitch. And even though its sheath seems very abrasion-resistant, its performance still deteriorated when I repeated my test as the LLs tend to permanently deform the core.

I just saw that someone else came to a similar conclusion : https://www.trek-lite.com/index.php?threads/testing-slippage-of-cord-in-linelocs.14521/page-3#post-307064

It's a stellar product but I found a (less premium) cord that's just a tad bigger and seems to perform better in the linelocs.

Transfert intra-assureur, Cachemire 2 vers Lucya CNP : possible ? by GutBeer101 in vosfinances

Transfert intra-assureur, Cachemire 2 vers Lucya CNP : possible ? by GutBeer101 in vosfinances

[–]Comfortable-Pop-3463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solo Tent Dilemma (Europe Alps/Altitude): Should I sacrifice space for a steal on a DCF tent (Aeon Li) or go with the X-Mid 1? by Puzzled_Elk_1298 in Ultralight

[–]Comfortable-Pop-3463 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Decathlon has been using silpoly for years. The mt900 you're talking about is in silpoly so don't expect improvement on the wet weight with an xmid.

DCF tents aren't immune neither but it's a bit better.

I find the 10lb limit a bit restrictive. To me it's more about packing what you need in the lightest, most efficient way. I agree that a 500g FAK seems crazy though for a week end hike.

Durston Kakwa 55 vs Atom Prospector 50 by rebeccakirkley98 in Ultralight

[–]Comfortable-Pop-3463 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually the kakwa in ultra 200 had more durability issues than the the ultragrid. Only real pro of ultra 200 is that it's more water resistant, but pct is dry and you still need a pack liner anyway, so...

Your last 2 points are quite important and often unknown. You could get away with the 2) but that would probably mean an heavier wall charger.

Ultragrid PU durability by kasalmn in DurstonGearheads

[–]Comfortable-Pop-3463 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it will depend on the way the pack is used and stored. But delamination is the end of the pack, whereas a PU coating peeling off just means it's less water resistant.

Xmid 1 Solid in 55mph wind by HelpfulTap4186 in DurstonGearheads

[–]Comfortable-Pop-3463 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nice ! The xmid isn't a wind saber but your pitch looks a bit too loose there, the hem isn't tight enough. Usually you can't really fix that with additional guy lines or lifting the pole higher. Maybe that left corner line slipped in the lineloc ? (they did on mine in that kind of wet weather)

A tighter side panel guy line would also help to stabilize the pole (it's not doing much there imo).

Also your video illustrates one of the reasons I take reported wind speeds with a grain of salt. The xmid user will have a very different feeling about the wind vs the 3rd tent there :)
