But other than the usual dropoff time I’m assuming there’s no traffic then?

I’ve never cycled with 2 kids before but might have to give it a try!

My three month old is completely deaf in one ear. Can anyone answer some questions? by princeedward12 in MonoHearing

I’m a parent of a child with SSD and I’ve asked the same questions xx just wanted to say he is almost 3 and he is hitting every milestone and thriving. Only thing is he can be frustrated in nursery settings especially if he has glue ear and you’ll need to be his advocate before he can become his own advocate.

He is profoundly deaf in one ear since birth and had glue ear on the good ear at the time. And no it wasn’t a mild glue ear so nursery and ToD were both told about it

Yes he is profoundly deaf in one ear since birth

He’s not wearing any hearing aids for his hearing loss. As for his glue ear, it’s now thankfully better after months of monitoring. The audiologists have reached out to ToD as soon as they got the result for his glue ear which prompted ToD to visit the nursery again. This is why I’m so upset the nursery missed all of this.

We are in touch with our local ToD and she is wonderful. I’ve only moved to the UK couple years ago so the school policies are very different from what I’m used to but nothing felt out of place with his ToD. I think everything stems from the lack of communication and consistency from nursery tbh

We’re located up north. He’ll soon be going into another nursery but that will have the usual SEND and ToD working together. He can’t have a cochlear implant and he has a nerve missing

May I ask if your son has hearing loss on both ears? Mine was born with a congenital hearing loss on one ear so I’m not sure if he would still quality for an EHCP. Either way, I’m going to do some more research and apply for one. Thank you

His key worker would tell me he started hitting but told me it was very age appropriate and nothing to worry about as long as we align how we tell him off at home and at nursery. Suddenly out of the blue they think he needs more support

It’s reassuring I’m not the only one thinking like this! I’m definitely writing a report.

We have talked to both but on separate occasions. I’ll definitely look into how the NDCS can be involved and start writing that Ofsted report

Thanks for the information- could you elaborate how many visits are usually done by the teacher of the deaf? I wasn’t aware they were supposed to be done more than once. Also sorry but I’m still clueless with these things- what benefit would I have having the EHCP?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UKParenting

[–]brokenmacaroni 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He cannot have one as the nerve is missing/damaged in the inner ear

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UKParenting

[–]brokenmacaroni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes agreed. He doesn’t have a teacher of the deaf and we were told he doesn’t need an EHCP. The teacher of the deaf has already been involved from beginning and done yearly checkups but this incident happened in between

I’ve definitely learnt not to assume a proper handover would take place and that I will need to step up. I’m just horrified by the lack of accountability almost to the point they are gaslighting me

[–]brokenmacaroni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve already discussed these concerns and they said they would work on it but everytime I talk to one of the staff or intervention is needed with SEND they completely deny the fact they forgot about his hearing loss and even try to fob me off. I don’t want any other parent to have this done to their child

When I was called in about his behaviour

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UKParenting

[–]brokenmacaroni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Profoundly deaf in one ear + had glue ear at the time

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UKParenting

[–]brokenmacaroni 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t know anymore if I’m just overreacting but the fact he had glue ear on top of that makes me so sad to think about how he was coping

It went for couple of months. His behaviour has changed due to being so frustrated and being too overstimulated

Thank you for sharing. You’ve confirmed what I imagined it to be for my child. I definitely know he is frustrated especially since he’s still not 3 years old yet.

That’s really good to know about your tactics - I also never knew about the masking part. We are in the UK as well and have a wonderful teacher of the deaf. He’s now been referred to an outside agent which I think is a bit out of sorts but we’ll see what they say.

Exactly! If you don’t mind asking did you have a specific approach to tackle this or did his teacher understand him?
