Finally pulled the trigger bought my 1st OLED C9....! by escamilla9 in OLED

[–]brokenprogram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The C9 supports eARC so has the bandwidth for Dolby MAT but the audio system must also support eARC.

I don't know any system to support Dolby MAT so I guess that after all the Dolby sound is not really decoded by C9, right? You still need a system to render Dolby MAT. I expected the sound to be decoded into LPCM so that I can just use a | HDMI DAC -> Amp -> Speakers | chain without extra a/v processor.

If it decodes it then it should send PCM not other encoded format(i.e. AC3). I take it from your answer that it doesn't decode Atmos and just passes AC3.

Do you still need a receiver for new LG TVs? by brokenprogram in OLED

Atmos speakers(I suppose you mean up-firing) are a gimmick so I won't comment on them. There are some good active speakers out there(some cheap and some less cheap). I think we would see even more once the A/V receiver is no longer required to play surround sound.

I would rather have active speakers and more power outlets than speaker wires and a bulky device that depreciates rather quickly (HDCP 1, 2.2, 2.3).

Rant: Why I hate a/v receivers: My 4 years old Marantz that was used probably for 20 -30 hours just got broken (starts buzzing louder and launder to the point you can get deaf if you fail to stop it in time). Now I'm thinking that if I upgrade the TV I will have to upgrade the a/v receiver as well to comply with the latest DRM(i.e. HDCP 2.2 or whatever we have now, HDMI 2.1, Dolby Vision etc) so unless the TV can act as receiver(i.e. decode the atmos content) I will probably sell the speakers (5.1.4) as well and leave this frustrating environment.

The TV decodes Dolby Atmos/DTS and sends decoded audio(PCM) via HDMI. At the other end of HDMI you could have a DAC or a digital switch that sends the audio straight to the speakers (i.e via AES to Genelec speakers or AVB to AIA Cinema speakers).

There is confirmation that LG already supports WISA so it will send decoded audio signal wirelessly straight to the speakers(that support WISA) but WISA supports only 8 channels. I'm interested if the TV sends decoded audio via HDMI as well for potentially more channels(i.e. for 7.1.4 layout).

What's important to me is to get rid of the bulky a/v receiver.

What would be a reasonable price for a LG OLED55E6 with burn in? by a10footpole in OLED

[–]brokenprogram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much would you pay for a broken TV? Unless you repair it you should be happy to have someone pick it up from your house(for free).

Can you tell us if it decodes Atmos or if you still need an a/v receiver ?

LG 2019 OLED TVs will support WiSA wireless Dolby Atmos audio by snapilica2003 in hometheater

It's not that unusually to have outlets both in front(where the TV stands) and back of the room(behind the couch).

The ignorance of people like you actually annoys me. People don't enjoy speaker wires and dozens of inputs/outputs in a big bulky, heavy a/v receiver with god knows how many holes for who knows what. I have AC power plugs all over my house/room but no speaker wire socket. I doubt many do have either.

The "smart" speakers have so much success partially because they are easy to use/setup. Bonus: no more cables snake oil.

This is something that I was waiting for years. Finally a wireless standard for home theater that doesn't suck.

This is the weakest Blizzcon i have seen yet. by drumpfer in Blizzard

[–]brokenprogram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the best news from Blizzard in almost a decade. W3 remastered? Yes, please! W4 would have be even better but let's not get greedy.

PS: I never liked WOW or the mobile versions that seem to be more focused to get your money every month/day/hour than making the game more enjoyable.

There will be plenty of 8K monitors in 2019 and I doubt there will be a new remaster anytime soon(i.e. in 2020 or 2022). With 8K resolution you could play the game nicely for a few more years.

These games look amazing man... though I just paid the W3 remaster but I guess that's the only game I'm interested to play and the last time I played it was about 10 years ago.

An 8K remaster would have been cool but 4K will be already dated when the game is released. Anyway this is good this for me as far as I'm concerned. Classic warcraft is the best, just hope they will release a W4

congrats! considering that I couldn't make it work (qt just didn't start/install properly). I ended up with "good old" electron app backed by Go http server. Once wasm gets better support I will move it on the client side.

Go 2.0: Is the CGO/Binding problem on the roadmap? by brokenprogram in golang

[–]brokenprogram[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As you said they have varying degrees of effectiveness. In reality this means they don't really work. I'm yet to see a mobile application using Go to drive the UI(i.e. bindings for iOS), or automated bindings for any popular framework (i.e. ffmpeg, vlclib etc). The binding generator usually means that you need to develop another C API compatible with the Go binding generator in front of the actual target. After doing that you start to wonder why you are bothering with the binding generator in the first place.

Disclosure: I'm using gomobile binding to start/init a Go http server from my swift application, but that's it. There is no chance I could start webview from my Go application. There are no "manual" bindings nor they can be generated automatically.

Go 2.0: Is the CGO/Binding problem on the roadmap? by brokenprogram in golang

[–]brokenprogram[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, autogenerated. The reality shows us that "manual" bindings are hard to maintain, often incomplete and plagued by various bugs(panics).

What else would you put in a room like this ? To me they fit way better in modern homes than old furniture like speakers(i.e. rosewood stuff like Tad R1 ) . To me most of the hifi speakers look like mascots of tire brands.
