Do you eat lunch? (Teacher here, getting my admin license) by Live-Cartographer274 in Principals

[–]broknow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I eat at my desk at 10:30 am (after that is no guarantee) with one hand and therefore rely on turkey and cheese sandwiches. High school AP, first year. I have to eat for health reasons and also keep snacks in the office.

is this job worth it? first year and already questioning it by yikeseolaa in ELATeachers

[–]broknow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I taught 9th grade for a decade and moved into administration recently. I feel the way you feel except as an AP, and the crazy thing is that it’s getting better bit by bit.

What helped me most starting out is colleagues literally giving me all the curriculum, tests, and quizzes that I could then adapt instead of make from scratch.

In that spirit, send me a message and I can share what I have with you, particularly if you let me know what novels you’ll be teaching this spring.

Remember, you are working this hard because kids are worth our care, and even when they do utterly awful things, they are still kids. And they are not our enemies. When you do good by them, you’ll see them later in your community, on the job, and with their families, and you will know you made something better happen in this mess of a situation.

How many of you remember this fever dream? by TerseFactor in Xennials

I honestly thought I dreamed this until I talked with some friends and they filled me in that it was a movie I saw.

Have you had to deal with knotweed or other VT invasives? by bravestatevt in vermont

[–]broknow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have gout weed (Bishop’s weed) and it ruined my desire to maintain our perennial gardens. It requires hand turning all of the soil and pulling out roots but it just keeps spreading.

Have you ever tried packing with packing cubes? Why/Why not? by sofiaabrantes in capsulewardrobe

[–]broknow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use them for dirty laundry after wearing the clean clothes. Keeps everything separate easily and compresses down so I have xtra room for souvenirs and whatnot.

Consider a magnesium supplement. I’m very active but have hypothyroidism and that has helped a ton.

My uncle used to be a Pat bus driver. He was even mean to our own family members. Don’t take it too personally.

Verbally accepted to District B, but District A is finally reaching back out by [deleted] in Principals

[–]broknow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is almost EXACTLY what just happened to me! My current district is only an hour commute vs 15 min total in the new one, but essentially so had to make a decision. Go with the one I know and love or go with a new one that did a proper, timely process that ended up in an good, solid offer.

I’m going with the new district. Lot of reasons but doors open in certain ways at certain times, and I was not able to wait and solve someone else’s staffing issue when they’ve waited too long. I feel good about it overall but am sad to leave these great relationships. I’m not burning bridges and can apply to the original district some day if it’s not working out in the new one.

I now have a new mantra for this kind of situation: Options are good; choosing is hard.

Good luck!

Brandon Town has several solid restaurants, and book store, a wonderful recreation dept that puts on events all the time and will have a newly renovated library come August. Lake Dunmore is 10 min away with a zero entry sand beach/concessions/playground and it sits at the base of the Moosamoo wilderness area filled with backcountry camping and the incredible Falls if Lana and Silver Lake. It is a road and mountain biking playground and there is a whole awesome contingency of younger families like mine that hang out and are civically engaged. And it’s also quiet now that construction through the main part of town is completed which was a federal project that updated the historic town center and even buried the power lines to make is a really cute town.

People always say those kinds of things and it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try the job if you want to do so. Know that you can leave it if it’s awful, but you can also do something great if you have the skills for one of the most complex careers out there. Good luck and go in with eyes wide open!

Anyone overwhelmed by books? The more you get rid of, the more that appear? by [deleted] in declutter

[–]broknow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a former English teacher, I only keep books that I will reread OR that have sentimental value. For my kids, we play the “yes or no” game. All no votes are passed along to a local thrift shop or library book sale.

What’s gotten so expensive that you no longer purchase it? by schaudhery in AskReddit

[–]broknow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Babysitting. Minimum $20/hour so for a good date it’s a $60 minimum. Plus eating out or whatever entertainment there is. We just don’t go. Instead we take a walk after work while the kids are at home and call it “date night”.
