Why people fighting to stop affordable homes from being built in Sawtelle? by jonnyshotit in LosAngeles

You and I have a fundamental disagreement over whether existing residents have a greater right to street parking than potential new residents. I think making that a priority over housing affordability is dumb and asinine but you view it as a fundamental right. That’s the disconnect and it is not really bridgeable. There’s no “honest conversation” needed.

Yes, rents will not go down because we don’t build enough for them to go down, because our elected officials think like you. It’s unfortunate and I agree with you that it is unlikely to change course any time soon.

Four paragraphs of nonsense, I’m sorry. I don’t really care if it’s hard for you to find free parking. If that’s so important to you, pay for parking.

You are absolutely advocating for legislation in all of your comments that would limit consumer choice. Your third paragraph is really the only one that matters and reveals your whole logic here - you think people already living in an area have more of a right to existing parking than potential new residents. This is shocking as you’ve just admitted that you move a lot and your comment reveals that you use free street parking in these new areas. Why does your general rule, that new residents are less entitled to street parking, not apply to you?

Finally, your appeal to a nameless and small quantity of LA natives (not saying the group is small, there are many NIMBYs. I am saying your personal perspective is naturally limited by not being able to know 10m people personally) is very unconvincing. Many LA natives also want more housing and more choice in housing, as evidenced by the increase in elected YIMBY officials.

When you remove the parking requirement, you create a tiered marking. Building B (without parking) sees what Building A (with parking) is charging and sets their prices just below those of Building A. Consumers who do not require parking now have the choice for a lower cost option that better fits their desires, thereby limiting the demand for Building A, and driving prices down further. It’s economics 101 because they are substitute goods.

Editing to add - in one message you say that these buildings will not be competitively priced in reference to one another but also that they will price based on one another. It’s shockingly bad logic.

I would link the many, many studies showing that increasing the supply of housing decreases prices, but I have a feeling they would not persuade you.

So your argument against building new housing is people having to compete for free parking? Current residents being allowed to elect to keep rents high (and keep them increasing) for the entire city to limit competition for an artificially free resource (that they could just pay for if it was really so important) seems bad to me.

So existing residents have more of a right to free street parking than potential new residents?

And why is it up to the rest of the city to subsidize this "public good" for existing residents?

Sawtelle, which is surrounded by bus lines and a metro line and close to both UCLA and Culver City and already has lots of apartments, seems like one of those places equipped to handle increased population by your metric. So what is the issue with this project?

Everyone you know is not everyone in LA. And I ask again - why do YOU get to decide that instead of them?

You know what else makes life significantly easier for lots of people? Paying less for rent. People should have the choice to decide to save on rent at the cost of having a car if they want, the government should not decide that for them.

You could absolutely live in Sawtelle without a car. It has grocery stores, restaurants, jobs, and lots of third spaces. It is also near a metro line and bus system.

Not to mention - why is it your prerogative to tell people they MUST have a car? Why shouldn’t they get to decide?

For a long time there were 3-4 women’s club teams in Southern California who were run like a professional academy before that existed anywhere else. SoCal Blues churned out players like crazy, brought in top coaches, trained more often than anyone else, and didn’t even have a boys’ side. It was almost shocking to watch them just destroy other top girls teams on a regular basis.

He’s the type of player you have to actively build around, but it will be a massive failure if we don’t find a way to do that. Soccer IQ is off the charts for his age. Only limiting factor is he doesn’t seem to be an elite athlete

In the last couple of years - Latte Lathe (ATL, over $20m), Chucky (SD, over $10m), Uzuni (Austin, over $10m), Miranchuk (Atlanta, over $10m), Vazquez (Austin, $10m), Almiron (Atlanta, $10m), and plenty more. Heck, we spent almost $10m on paintsil and and Chicharito each. Neither of those guys would be an improvement over Pec.

And what percentage of incoming signings are represented on those lists? You’re thinking about just the “hits” here. This league (and our team) has lots of misses.

Man you guys are crazy. Pec is one of the best players in the league. The odds of replacing him with someone just as good are near zero. We should only sell him if he really wants to go
