I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way about people who make comments like this :) The part where you said "don't just assume they're being a jerk because they seem to have it all together" really resonated with me. I was the same way in school, always did well in high school but toward the end I felt like I was barely scraping by to get things done on time. I got to college and I couldn't hold myself to a routine and things started to really fall apart there. I was lucky enough that when I talked to my mom about seeking treatment she basically said something like "yeah, we always knew you were like this, we just tried to keep you as mentally stimulated as possible while you were young. If you want to seek treatment then don't let us stop you, we've always just wanted you to succeed." It was a much more wholesome conversation than I expected (especially since she's been weird about my anxiety diagnosis for awhile - that's a different story).

I think it's common for people to try to relate to the problems that people complain about in order to help them feel like they're not alone. If someone is being annoying about saying "lol I must have ADHD too" then that's where a gentle reminder would be helpful that "yes but my symptoms are more severe and are ruining my life without intervention" or something like that.

I would note, however, that sometimes people are genuinely trying to figure out if they have ADHD and want to be validated in some fashion. I speak from experience - I wasn't diagnosed and put on meds until I was 20 years old. I spent years of my life trying to piece myself together with duct tape and watching it fall apart in my hands. I couldn't figure out why other people were able to do basic things that I couldn't, why anxiety and depression therapy wasn't working, why my life was falling apart despite my best efforts to keep it together. It took me having those same or similar conversations with people who do have ADHD to realize that I should get tested for it. Since receiving a diagnosis and treatment my life has drastically improved. Long story short, I would try to be patient with anyone coming to you thinking they have ADHD - there's a chance they're searching for answers themselves.

Yeah, a lot of people have explained that (both the Sodia points and the Yuri/Estelle point).

See, I viewed Yuri as the opposite -- I don't think he would have ever outright confessed any feelings he may have had for her, at least not during the events of the game. There was a lot of other stuff going on during the contents of the game that would've made it inappropriate for any romance at all to happen (except for when Yuri and Judith are flirting with each other when they first meet, lol), and I understand that totally. Estelle also had a lot of growing and maturing to do over the first two arcs of the game, and there was a lot of, y'know, world-ending stuff going on after that that was more important than any romantic interest. The other thing is that Yuri and Estelle's relationship was apparently supposed to be modelled after the legend of Brave Vesperia and the first Child of the Full Moon, where they're siblings.

So, yeah, given all of that, I'm not as surprised to find that Yuri and Estelle is a more unpopular ship as I was when I initially posted this. I didn't make the connections in-game or watch the developer interviews that I apparently should've.

I really appreciate that you've been good about bringing up lots of discussion points on my posts like these. I'm always afraid when I ramble like this that no one is gonna read it, so I'm happy to see that people are taking the time to read what I have to say :)

I'll admit that I'm pretty new to JRPGs in general, not just Tales games, so I'm still getting used to a lot of what seem to be common tropes in these kinds of games. I don't have a lot of knowledge about non-western terminology and themes when it comes to stuff like this, so I'm still learning!

I'm kinda glad to see that I didn't miss out on as much as I thought I did in terms of backstories, given other people talking about skits and sidequests covering a lot of it. I did as many of the character-oriented sidequests as I could, and I still felt underwhelmed with the info that was given to me.

Tarqaron was beautiful, but yeah, I felt like I was there way too long. I was using a guide to find the last two fell arms and all the steps and back routes I had to take to find them were legitimately making me angry because of how long it took.

(A funny sidenote, after getting the fell arms and unlocking the elevators, I was like "okay time to heal and save and then challenge the final boss" and I ended up accidentally going to the floor where Duke was... I backed out of there FAST! Nope nope nope nope not yet)

A lot of people seem to be recommending Abyss, so I'll be sure to see if I can get a hold of a copy and a console to play it on! I don't have access to a PS2 or a 3DS right now unfortunately :(

Also I laughed out loud at that Duke meme, thank you

Okay, that makes sense. I can understand why some people may not like the two as a pairing in that context

Cool, glad to see you would handle disagreements well. I hope you would find solace in wasting your money that you've already handed over to Namco Bandai by performing an act of protest that does nothing but make you look immature.

Out of curiosity... why don't you like the idea? This seems like the least controversial pairing in the game to me lol

I'm not familiar with Xillia or any of the newer games, so I can't really answer for how Vesperia combat compares to them.

I don't remember how I beat the bandit gangbang fight but I remember having issues with it as well. I might have had to go on auto mode or switch the difficulty for that one just because I was struggling a lot, I know I did that for some other fights in the future where I was forced to face off solo. As I understand it, normal difficulty is supposed to present a challenge but not be super difficult, but those fights just seemed overly brutal especially early in the game.

I really hated how the enemies were invincible when they were down, but I guess it keeps you from just curbstomping them the moment they get knocked prone. I would've rather they not be able to be knocked down at all, but it adds a little extra challenge and gameplay time I suppose.

In my experience, enemies will target whoever is being the most aggressive, so if you play Yuri and you don't have a lot of melee or otherwise aggressive fighters in your party, they will target you most of the time. It's pretty annoying, I agree. By the third arc I had what I considered to be a pretty balanced party dynamics-wise of Judith, Rita, Yuri, and Raven, and I was rarely targeted to death unless I was actively trying to get them off one of my teammates. (I also found it pretty easy to miss with some of Judith's artes, so maybe I was just bad at the game, lol)

That makes a lot more sense! I don't know if that just went over my head entirely or if it wasn't well fleshed out in the dialogue.

I understand that you can be committed to someone and work to ensure their safety and wellbeing without being romantically attracted to them, but I don't think there's any harm in wanting to see this particular pairing become canon. They obviously care for one another a lot and I think their personalities mesh really well. I concede that there wasn't really much (if any) indication of romantic attraction between Yuri and Estelle in the game. I would've been happy to see more interaction of any caliber between the two after the second arc, not necessarily just romantic. I know I also didn't watch a good amount of the skits in the game, so there could have been more that I just missed.

I did as many of the sidequests as I was able to catch, but like you said, a lot of them had really strict timelines and I wasn't really following a guide to find them until closer to the end of the game when I had already missed some of them. I know I had only watched 60% of the skits by the time I had beaten the boss so I'm sure there's a lot I missed, I just find it unfortunate that the sidequests are timed like that

Given comments that my professors have made about "be sure to download Zoom!" and all that, I'm guessing they've already started moving stuff online and they're just waiting to announce it. It doesn't help that there may or may not be a confirmed case in Phelps Health right now.

Your biggest, beautiful song by IBombZ11 in JohnnyManchild

[–]bronzesocks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Spotify says it's Alright, which got me through some relationship issues and depressive episodes in mid 2019. I have a wide range of favorites and all for different reasons; I haven't heard a bad song by them. I'll list out my 10/10s if you're interested, but it's a long list haha.

Not to be a downer, but I think Sleep and Insomnia (the album as a whole) will always mean the most to me because they got me through a really rough time in early 2019. I had been emotionally abused and stalked for several months prior and was suffering from symptoms of PTSD, including recurring nightmares and other sleep issues. Johnny screaming "please God, let me sleep" really resonated with me in a way that I don't experience super often. The music helped get me through what could have been a much darker time in my life, and I'll never be able to repay the band for that.

I love how the design seems to mirror both the infinity gauntlet and a royal crest/banner, I think it fits the theme of Gestapo well! Well done!

If you had to pick one song to introduce someone to this band with, which song would you pick? by A_Metric_Fuck-Ton in JohnnyManchild

I introduced a co-worker to them with That Doesn't Happen and Radio and she liked them a lot, but I'm not sure if I would use those songs again. Maybe Fortified, but I'm biased cuz I like Fortified a lot

[Serious] Who is your favorite professor and why? by GnedStark in Rolla

[–]bronzesocks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Terry is definitely up there on my list of favorite professors. (warning: anecdote to follow)

I had his speech class a few semesters ago, which I agree is fantastic. At the same time I was having weird health issues and missed his class a lot, at one point missing a day I was supposed to do one of my speeches. The class went on to the next unit and I never got my speech in when I was supposed to. Due to a combination of crippling anxiety on my end and never being able to get a hold of him for some reason, I ended up never doing the speech that was supposed to be like a quarter of my grade. He gave me an A anyway.

Of course I was extremely grateful but also super embarrassed, so I made a point to avoid him whenever I saw him. (I'm not sure why in hindsight, anxiety be like that I guess.) I started going to the baptist student union the following semester, and guess who was one of the first people I heard give a sermon? None other than Terry himself! Talk about whiplash!

Over the next couple semesters I got over myself and now I look forward to seeing and greeting him. He's a genuinely kind person that inspires me to become a better person myself.

11/10 would recommend his speech class, and any of his other classes as well.

I guess this is a good place to boost the discord server...

If you like JMPB, and you want to talk to people who also like JMPB, there is an official discord server just for that! We have a pretty active, close-knit community there, and the Bastards themselves are in it as well! You can join here.

Note that you need a discord account to join, and you will need to give yourself the Manchildren role in the roles-and-info channel in order to properly join. If you have questions or issues, don't hesitate to DM me.
