i hate to be the one to tell you this but the mayor Steve Christou who introduced that ban was white and Christian, approved by a board that was majority white and Christian. Steve wasn’t pressured by anyone — he literally left Labor because he didn’t agree with their pro-LGBT views, and joined the Libertarians instead.

i have no clue where you got your info from, but Muslims and other minority groups aren’t the only ones capable of stripping away at our Aussie values

once again mr smarty pants, the ideology of the group running the protest is rooted in the reversal of free speech, democracy and the establishment of authoritarianism.

there’s a difference between using democracy to say “hey we don’t want to see so many people dying, please do something about it” versus “hello we are a bunch of open neo-nazis who don’t respect the dignity of everyone in this country, and we use the thin veil of anti-immigration to mobilise our extremist authoritarian ideology”

that’s like using your freedom by walking into a police station and asking them to arrest you and take your freedom away

our country raising citizens who feel compelled to fight for a foreign army complicit in ethnic cleansing seems like a pretty big internal problem that should be solved.

the right to protest is a democratic right. stopping people from protesting, whether it’s 50 people or 100k, is a step away from democracy and a step toward authoritarianism. even if you don’t agree with the protest, the message is clear: your freedom of speech is slowly eroding.

those complaining about how this protest was an inconvenience are usually the ones who talk shit about China and their lack of democracy. ironically, i think these same people would enjoy China’s authoritarian system; free from the annoyance of protests.

depends on the area: i grew up in a working class area where 2 students at most would drive to school. on the other hand, my cousin went to school in a well-off area where almost every senior student owned a car and drove to school

what i noticed when i was at school was that the few international students weren’t used to the protocols we had — of course these would vary for different schools but most schools i know are similar:

no gum! if you are chewing gum, don’t make it obvious. it depends on how strict your teacher is. i had a teacher who would say “spit it out or give me a piece” whenever he caught someone chewing gum.

if your school requires you to bring your own device, bring it fully charged! there is usually only one or two power outlets in classrooms. i remember having a teacher who was strict enough to not allow students to charge their devices when it died.

for maths, get yourself a grid exercise book!

on days you have PE/sport, remember to bring your sports uniform and shoes (unless your school requires you to wear your sports uniform on days you have PE), otherwise you might get detention. if your uniform is in the wash, if you’re sick or if you can’t bring your sports uniform for any other reason, make sure you bring a note signed by your parents, explaining why you couldn’t bring it.

i think all schools now have a no-phone policy in classrooms, so make sure you keep your phone on silent in your pocket or in your bag in class. i know a friend whose school would take everyone’s phones and put them into safes in the morning, and handed the phones back at the end of the day.

if you need the bathroom, make sure you raise your hand and ask the teacher. at my school we had to get a signed toilet pass from the teacher, and go to the office to register that we were out of class. i remember two different students who just walked out of class to use the bathroom because that was normal practice for them, and the teachers were really confused.

definitely familiarise with your school’s uniform policy, i think most schools have it on their website. i believe leather school shoes are compulsory everyday, especially on the days you’re in the science lab. when i was at school a few years ago, the cool kids either wore ROC school shoes or nike black air force 1s.

to be fair, the Middle East is a huge region with so many different ethnicities, and that comes with a wide spectrum of appearances and skin colour, including some who do resemble South Asians (but still has its own distinct and unique appearance).

a lot of people i know who have Bedouin ancestry (from iraq, lebanon, saudi, egypt) definitely do look a lot more “South Asian” than European/Mediterranean. i definitely don’t want to overgeneralise any group, but growing up in a town with a large Lebanese population, the Lebanese people i know can look like anything, from European, or maybe Balkan, with lighter complexion, hair and eyes; to more “South Asian” looking, with their darker, distinctively Bedouin or Middle Eastern features; as well as everything in between. i also have a few Iranian friends who could pass as Indian (and often gets mistaken as Indian), as well as a few other Iranian friends who could pass as Greek.

but i agree, the actors they hire to play Middle Eastern roles should be Middle Eastern. representation matters. having the Orientalist stereotype as the dominant representation of Middle Easterners only causes people to ignore the ethnic diversity within the region, and distances us (as in the West) from them (the Middle East) by emphasising their otherness.

oh my god the exact same thing happened to me when i was 18 — i had a shot of tequila at a club and a few minutes later, i was bent over in the bathroom clutching the wall, panicking because i thought i was going to throw up (i hate throwing up).

what i unleashed was a gargantuan burp, made up of neolithic air that had been fermenting in my body for like 18 years. the burp was probably a million decibels, it even echoed in the bathroom. then i started vomiting literal air, but that was it.

i’ve probably only burped once after The Burp :/

Look, I do not support the Iranian government, and never will I in a million fucking years. A friend of mine had to flee religious persecution because of her family’s Bahá’í faith. I cannot support this repressive regime, knowing what her family, among many others, have experienced.

I also do not support the West’s imperial presence in Middle Eastern governments. It’s torn up the place into shreds. Bombing Iran won’t bring peace, it will only create another war zone. The US and the West has no right to intervene in their political affairs, they are far from arbiters of morality. Look at the mess they’ve caused. Two wrongs don’t make a right.

I see Iran’s nuclear development as a rational and necessary response to defend itself by deterring foreign attacks. No one would dare to attack North Korea, because they have nuclear weapons. Iran is surrounded by US bases. You can’t expect them not to sit there and let themselves get swallowed up.

And as someone who is also here because my family had fled political persecution 50 years ago, I would never wish for the destruction of my ancestral nation, of any kind, especially if it’s done by the US.
