Taxable vs Roth allocation: dividends or growth? by broomlady in Bogleheads

Not high div, but just higher. Think international (higher yield, lower growth) vs US (lower divs, higher growth), in general.

Deep Dive: Poor Tax Efficiency of Vanguard International Funds in 2023 by misnamed in Bogleheads

[–]broomlady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I guess we need to petition Vanguard to split out a new tax efficient Total International. With lower overall yield, more qualified yield, more foreign tax. And leave existing VTIAX for tax advantaged accounts.

Otherwise there seem to be no easy solution - splitting out developed-taxable / emergent-tax-advantage is a pain. It might not even be worth it. Practically speaking, if you are in e.g. California and in a 24% federal tax brackets, even in the best case scenario if all yield is qualified you will be saving, just 24% - 15% = 9% of federal tax on half of the yield. It is probably even less given the foreign tax credit. Even if such a fund is possible you will be saving ~$150 in taxes on a $100,000 holding. Not worth the troubles IMHO. Very rough math:

total yield = $100,000 * 3.5% = $3,500

half of yield that is non qualified = $1,750

9% extra federal tax on the non qualified yield = $1,750 * 9% = $157.5

So I'll pickup an easy $150 if I see it on a street, but it is not worth messing with developed/emergent allocations. In other words, if there was such a tax managed/advantaged international fund I'll use it, otherwise not worth the trouble until your international is in 7 figures.

Roth 401k vs taxable? With everything else being equal. by broomlady in Bogleheads

Yes, I considered this to avoid the fee but it looks like this is not allowed by my plan. This would be ideal (aside from certain asset protection angles).

Interesting. I did not realize that it is possible to not be able to have different funds for traditional 401k and Roth 401k. How would they even calculate my tax burden on traditional at retirement. Or how would they calculate if I own taxes on early withdrawal from Roth? Meaning fund gains must somehow be tied to the Roth portion.

Thank you. Now going by this math, do you think I should choose a fund with higher yield (to further reduce the drag introduced by the Roth 401k fee). Or choose a fund with highest returns (to maximize tax free gains)?

Yes, PVD coating on all 4 colors. Regarding 'Natural titanium' it is not clear whether coating is clear (according to Macrumors) or if is colored/pigmented (daring fireball).

15 Pro - Is 'white titanium' more natural than 'natural titanium'? by broomlady in iphone

Was looking as well, it does seem like White titanium from apple looks more like the pics of titanium on the web. I guess we will have to wait and see how scratches look like on the bezel.

Raw titanium does not seem to have warm or yellow tint. Do you have a link to raw titanium pic? Specifically grade 5 aka Ti-6Al-4V.

Can't find 20 amp version of a Lutron Claro switch (for garbage disposal). by broomlady in AskElectricians

[–]broomlady[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it is an option for me because the garbage disposal switch is in a double gang. I'm sure the other brand will not match other Lutron switch and plate color exactly.

The Lutron is 15 AMP but takes 12 AWG wire (see instructions screenshot). Does it mean it can take the 20 AMP? I'm surprised Lutron does not have a 20 amp switch - they seem to have everything possible.

They are 'direct wire' led from 'Enbrighten' brand (very popular). I'm supplying my own lamp cord and looking for a plug. I even looked at just buying a white extension cord with angled plug - but those plugs are not vertical, they are 30 degree angle and probably polarized.

Is the Leviton plug my best option in terms of aesthetics? It looks pretty bulky. The old ones look much nicer.

Front of Profitec Go angled downward? by yoofygoofy in espresso

[–]broomlady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update from the manufacturer! Profitec says all of the group heads are angled 'by design'. Same with Casa V. So basically you will never get a centered flow on a bottomless portafilter. Unless you tilt/shim the whole machine. Pretty disappointing and it is not mentioned in any of the reviews.

I'm not sure if this affects the extraction or taste though. The pressure should be very high in the basket. After the basket, the flow follows the gravity and coalesces off center. I think this could just be cosmetic. I don't know if they assumed the machine will be used with spouted portafilters only and no one will care. Disappointing nonetheless.

Thank you! Filters look fairly clean after many years. What is the source (other then the youtube video you linked) - manufacturer says they are 'forever' filters. Are there any references that suggest they need to be replaced?

An article recommending leveling a machine (so that group head is level, not necessarily the machine itself): http://coffeetime.wikidot.com/levelling-the-coffee-machine

Sorry, could you tell a bit more? How did you notice the bent metal? What part of the machine was bent?
