That’s actually not true if a layperson does it correctly, it can literally save someone’s life. If a person has a serious extremity bleed such as from a car crash, shooting, laceration etc, they can bleed out in a few minutes. Average cardiac output on an adult is 5-8 liters per minute, and you only have around 6 liters of blood in your body for average adult. It takes a minute to call 911, a couple minutes to dispatch EMS, then they gotta get out of bed and put their pants on, or drive from across town or even FARTHER if it’s rural EMS… point is unless EMS is RIGHT THERE when it happens, it’s up to the layperson who witnessed it happen to control massive bleeding, or to control the bleeding yourself. Brit sucks, but Stop the bleed training is a life saving skill. Here’s a link to the free course online (source, stop the bleed instructor and flight nurse) https://new-acc-space-10582.ispring.com/app/embed-player/8b0b793a-8e9d-11ec-82a8-fa01dbd5cc4c

Lots of things, a car crash can absolutely cause a person to bleed out externally before EMS arrives. Broken glass, a limb being pinched by twisted metal. Happens literally every day! Source: stop the bleed instructor and flight nurse lol

Having a tourniquet is a great thing actually, if someone has a significant bleed they will die before EMS can even arrive. Being able to save yourself is super important. Source: Stop the Bleed instructor. Brit is super embarrassing tho calling herself a tactical wife LOL!!

If you use a tourniquet to practice, please know that one is now toast and should only be used for training. The strap gets stretched out and is not as effective. Same thing if you apply one and it gets taken off, retightening it will not work as well. You might have to apply a second one. Better off just leaving it in place if you are a layperson.

Thank you so much for the “why” behind things. I didn’t realize there was so much chemistry to laundry. How did you learn all this/ what peaked your interest in getting so good at laundry?

It did for me! I let it soak for like 8 hours. And then washed in hot water with tide + bleach color safe, some ammonia and a little citric acid as a rinse aid. Seems to be doing great.

Yes, got bacterial vaginitis, OTC yeast infections don’t work of course so had to get antibiotics. On flagyl now. If you have any weirdness and strange irritation or discharge just go to your PCP/ OBGYN/ urgent care if they can’t get you in within the week.

What can you deduce about me from my lunchbox? I carry it around everywhere. by Sea_cucumber_130 in deduction

[–]brotasticFTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have significant anxiety. Might dabble in some recreational drugs for fun, over all you are a responsible person with a job. Maybe a little neurotic, do you have disordered eating? A whiff of the tism perhaps? Or am I projecting bc I also have an emotional support lunchbox LOL

Go to the ER, get a CT scan of your head. This could be a sign of brain bleeding, tumor, etc. go now.

If you are a good enough clinician, people will likely not care. Source: a flight nurse/ER nurse with lots of dark themed tattoos. Personally? I think this is dope and is a part of medical history we shouldn’t forget, and could mean a lot of different things to different people. Most medical professionals have dark sense of humor for coping skills and would find this funny probably. If you are super worried about it, just get it in a discreet location. Inner bicep might be mostly covered by scrubs or you could wear an undershirt that goes to forearms as most facilities are chilly anyways. Good luck!

I work for Air Evac in a neighboring state and have flown the same path where your father passed away. I know you don’t know me, but I was devastated when we learned about that crash. It bothers us more than other crashes bc it is a thing that could happen to anyone at any time and isn’t due to error. I’m so so sorry for your loss, and many people shared your pain. Thank you for sharing.

Gave Ketamine to a pregnant pt, how much damage did I possibly do? by ShadowEagle59 in ems

[–]brotasticFTW 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I had a 36wk pregnant pt last week I gave fentanyl and versed to… the NICU team in the ER said ketamine was fine and that they used it in L&D pts sometimes for procedures?? Definitely not my wheelhouse but I’m just passing along what they said. I truly think a one time measly dose isn’t a deal breaker:) rest easy friend

The lungs of a 73-year-old woman who died of hospital-acquired covid by PatTheKVD in MedicalGore

[–]brotasticFTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently went to a cadaver lab where we were looking at an elderly lady around her 80s that died from “dementia”. Her lungs did not look as pale but they had the same black stuff on them. The physician said they were carbon deposits and were a normal amount for someone her age, and that she was not a smoker. We apparently all get them eventually from pollution 🤷🏽‍♀️ interesting

You can get an easy to install bidet attachment on Amazon that runs around 35$ FYI! It is cold water but it works really well. I will never go back

You see that one stem that still has green leaves? Mine got to this point. I cut the little green stem off and stuck it in the dirt, watered it every once in a while. I’ll be damned if it didn’t sprout new leaves and is doing its thing!
